Last month, we saw countless disasters like massive flood, heartbreaking road accidents and some circulating trends in social media. Hundreds of people died and others were displaced. Costly infrastructure and public property were destroyed. Life in eastern and western terai belts became hard, but no one gave up in the turmoil. Despite facing difficult situation, the societal response and rescue operations were commendable.

Many organizations and groups came together and supported during the crisis. Social media campaigns helped to people warns beforehand about the potential mishap and respond adequately to the need of the situation. It became easier to publish and spread the information. Throughout disaster period, Nepali people didn’t quit and fought their way by joining hands and bringing aid to the victims- a beautiful aspect of humanitarian deed of Nepali people-- hats off.

As soon as the flood ceased, news about dozens of road accidents came to the fore. The accidents occurred in different places throughout the country. Dozens of innocent people were killed and many got scraped. Due to the carelessness of various responsible bodies-many human lives were at risk. This is the time to know about the actual cause and takes preventive measures.

Last month provoked different social and political issues. One of them was popular international franchise show—Nepal idol. Different perceptions of people about their favorite contestant brought so many opinions and discrepancy seen flowing in the social media. Fragmentation of thoughts appeared among the fans, but this is not what we Nepalese generally do. We always respect each other and accept other’s survival. We are the most diversified and most united. If any Nepali in terai gets wounded then no one is happy in the hilly region. We don’t fight over basic things. It doesn’t matter whoever is our favorite contestant —it matters if we are able to accept contestant with more talent or not.

Well, having said about this, our main festival Dashain is around the corners, so let’s think about how we make it special for entire nation. To ease the bitter past time, let’s join hand in hand and act for a unified cause. Dashain is all about taking a break from long exhausting trails. We celebrate in groups enjoy the holidays and forget ill will because the message is taking good on the evil. Let’s make this Dashain memorable, jovial, healthy and blissful one.

In this issue, we have brought Dashain related reading materials to our dear readers. We want our readers to get inspired from the stories of various people in society who have done remarkably well. In order to make this issue a better and meaningful one, we have interviewed different scholars and experts. We have tried to make it more informative and entertaining. One can read about various topics such as beautiful hang-out story during Dashain, awesome life story of veteran actor Sunil Thapa. Being an academic magazine we have been introducing different people who have done insistently awesome work in the academic sector. Prior Miss Nepal 2010,Sadichha Shrestha has spilled the beans about her achievements. So, enjoy reading!

The time of year has arrived finally, Dashain also known as “Vijaya Dashami” or “Bada Dashain” is knocking at the front door for Nepalese people. It is the biggest festival of Hindus and marks the victory over evil. Dashain is celebrated for 15 days. It falls in the month of Aswin and Kartik. (September/October). It marks the event where Goddess Durga slayed a terrible demon Mahisasur who terrorized the earth in the form of brutal water buffalo. It also marks victory of Lord Ram over Ravana-the fiendish demon king.

The first nine days are about ferocious battle between Goddess Durga and Mahisasur. On the tenth day, Mahisasur was killed. The last five days are the celebration of the victory of goddess Durga and her blessings to our world. In Nepal during Dashain government declares public holiday. Schools and offices are closed and it is marked in the Nepalese calendar as well. People clean, paint and decorate their house at Dashain. Families are re-united, missing come home and some who are not with their families call home and convey greetings and there is an exchange. Those who unite have dashain parties with friends and family. They play cards, fly kites, go shopping, enjoying delicious meals, put tika from the elders of the family and receive blessings and dakshina. Dashain is celebrated on a day to day ritual. First day is called Ghatasthapana and on this day ‘Jamara” is put on Dashain ghar. Day 2 is called Ditiya and worshipping Goddess Durga continues at Dashain ghar till the seventh day. Third day is Tritiya, Fourth is Chaturthi, Fifth day is Panchami, Sixth day is Sashthi, Seventh day is Fulpati or Saptami, On Fulpati, sacred leaves of Bel tree, Sugarcane are brought from Gorkha Palace to the Hanuman Dhoka where main Dashain Ghar is established. It is also known as (Mui Kot). This festival takes place at the end of monsoon season and at end of harvest time of rice crops.

Nine forms of Durga are Brahmani, Mahesvari, Kumari, Vaisnavi, Indrani,

Mahakali, Mahalakshmi and Tripurasundari. Each form represents each of the nine planets in the solar system. Worshipping these goddesses helps to protect the people of our country from negative cosmic influences. Animals like goat, buffaloes are sacrificed and later feasted on the tenth day. On Taleju temple 108 buffaloes are sacrificed in honor of victory of Goddess Durga over Mahisasur. Living maiden goddess “Kumari” makes public appearance and she is worshipped and made offerings by the people. During earlier time the king was given tika by the priest and King would give tika to his people as well. We saw this before the last Shah dynasty. Shops close their sales and everyone returns back to their homes. It is this re-union we celebrate with our relatives, friends playing swings making garlands, decorating, gambling and giving gifts.

Tenth day also known as Vijaya Dashami parent’s put tika on their child’s forehead. The elders do the same to the younger ones, lot of feasting and celebration by giving gifts occurs on a joyous note. Tika ends on the final day of Dashain at Kojagrata Purnima-the full moon day. For some people Dashain is very delightful but for some who don’t have family members or some staying far and are not able to visit home, some who are financially handicapped and may not have celebrated Dashain as they would have expected all these things would not bring them happiness. However, our protector will look after them. Excess drinking and eating, gambling, spending beyond the limits, drinking and driving etc could be hazardous for you and your family. It is advised to moderate these habits, get together and celebrate in the true spirits, show concern and gratitude to your society. Be humble and moral, do well and stay healthy is our philosophy.

Happy Vijaya Dashami to all of you!

WHAT KEEPS YOU BUSY THESE DAYS?

I was not here for last two years. I am looking forward for Dashain and planning to spend quality time at home. I have not started any professional work yet.

HOW DID MISS NEPAL HAPPEN?

It happened after my I.Sc and I had free time before joining Bachelors. I consulted with my Parents, selected for interview and became the youngest contestant. I was 19 years old. I gained lot during those six weeks time. It is a big responsibility after you become Miss Nepal. I had to prepare internationally, improved my personality by correcting the errors , self motivated to face the upcoming challenges.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR ACADEMIC JOURNEY ?

I spend 13 years of school life at E.P.S school Min Bhavan. I was the last batch of I.Sc program. I was awarded the outstanding student award from St. Xaviers College. After that I became Miss Nepal. I was not able to devote my time for studying to be a doctor because I had social obligations after Miss Nepal I did Management studies B.B.S from St. Xaviers College. I did MBS from St. Xaviers’ while I was looking for opportunity outside the country. I got offer letter from AIT and I went there.

HOW IMPORTANT IS EDUCATION THOUGH YOU HAVE A BEAUTY WITHIN YOU?

Education and beauty pageant don’t go hand in hand. Most people think if one has the beauty and want to go in media they forget about attaining education, which is not my case. I pursued my studies and recently awarded with gold medal through honorable President.

HOW DID YOU FEEL RECEIVING GOLD MEDAL FROM THE PRESIDENT?

To achieve this spot I worked very hard in the two years Masters

Degree program. I felt I had achieved big time and yet again proved myself after crowning of Miss Nepal.

WHAT IS YOUR MESSAGE FOR UPCOMING PARTICIPANTS OF MISS NEPAL?

You have to pursue your dreams with vigor but also remember education is also important at the end of the day. You can take a degree by concentrating on your interested subject. Don’t leave studies behind.

THE RURAL SECTORS ARE STILL DEPRIVED FROM QUALITY LEVEL OF EDUCATION. WHAT ARE YOUR THINKING IN THIS ISSUE?

Education is the basic human right. It is very important. I am glad when people get committed through NGO’S to take education a step further. I have received offers to visit different colleges and speak on education for all. Many of my well wishers were aspired by my story and got motivation to achieve like me. I hope future contestants show excellent academic performance while they are facing the media.

WHAT ARE YOUR FUTURE PLANS?

I have successfully finished my two years Masters program from Thailand, now I want to start a job here. I want to give my 100% at work. For the meantime I want to have quality time with my family.

YOU WERE STUDYING IN THAILAND, HOW MUCH DID YOU MISS DASHAIN?

At AIT, Thailand there was a society called Nepali Samaj. They celebrated Dashain and I was happy to be celebrating Dashain and receiving tika. I felt excited to celebrate with Nepalese at the international venue. It was more enjoyable than celebrating Dashain back home with family because I was away from home, yet I didn’t miss Dashain as I would have celebrated normally. Culturally, I explored and learned more. We visited Nepali professors for tika and received blessings in exchange.

WHAT DOES DASHAIN MEAN TO YOU?

Dashain is celebrating good over evil.

WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS THIS DASHAIN AFTER RETURNING BACK FROM THAILAND?

This year, I want to give more time to my family and make our bond stronger. I want to help my mom and share the household chores. I will feast scrumptious food and plan to visit family members whom I have never met for long time at tika.

YOUR MESSAGE IN DASHAIN FOR ASPIRING GENERATIONS?

Money may or may not be with you but education remains forever. Knowledge doubles when you share it to others. Be supportive and caring to others. May Dashain bring peace, prosperity and harmony in the lives of Nepali people.

Chief of Metropolitan Traffic Police Division Sarbendra Khanal has been supervising the rules and regulations of traffic Police. He has coordinated the psychological counseling programme at District Police Office in Bhaktapur. He has also actively participated in clearing the roads of Kathmandu with his force by fixing all the dividers, using dozers to remove obstacles and making roads congestion free and management of traffic. HOW DIFFICULT IS IT FOR MANAGING TRAFFIC IN KATHMANDU CITY?

It is challenging, number of vehicle is high and infrastructure is not good. We have to manage it. It is difficult. People want to reach their destination on time. They don’t want to be stopped between traffic. If you are inside the system, you must follow it. At foreign countries, people follow queues and wait in the intersection for traffic light at least 10-15 minutes. In our system we must queue up systematically. Here people should follow traffic rules and regulations but some citizens shirk this. If you are a license holder you must be disciplined and be aware of what is right and wrong. Moral education is very important. Pollution must be controlled for environment friendly city. The traffic issues must be addressed jointly by the Police department and the citizens of our country.

WHAT IS THE REASON BEHIND CONGESTION OF TRAFFIC?

Increase in population is the crux. There should be scientific study of number of vehicles for number of population in a ratio, what is the floating population should be mapped, what vehicles can bring improvement in the city traffic and using public transportation instead of motor bikes in academic institutes, making the route points for private vehicles. The condition of valley for the vehicles is not well-developed and supply of vehicles are more in the country and our roadway is inadequate for growing number of transportation and population are the main problems.

IN YOUR OPINION WHAT ARE THE GENERAL PROBLEM AREAS YOU FIND IN TRAFFIC?

Human errors are making things difficult. So we need to abide by the system. Traffic signs, signals, road furnishing, road markings for prohibition of overtake, lane discipline, markings are some of the basic things which we don’t have. We need to review and make reforms in these areas. Slow moving vehicles should run in the left lane for another vehicle to overtake. It is seen when there is a space the vehicles speed past without consideration of traffic rules. The riders must be fully conscious of how they are using the roads and adopting traffic rules. Bypass should be free, no one should haul goods on the pavement and two wheelers must be prohibited strictly. These things must be adopted for careful driving. Orientation, counseling must be done regarding traffic regulation.

THE MECHANISM FOR SOLVING TRAFFIC PROBLEMS IS NOT POSSIBLE ONLY FROM THE AUTHORITIES, WHEN ANY ACCUSATIONS ARE MADE IT GOES TO THE TRAFFIC

POLICE. WHO DO YOU THINK ARE THE RESPONSIBLE BODIES FOR SOLVING THIS PROBLEM AND WHAT IS THE MESSAGE FOR PEOPLE MAKING ACCUSATIONS?

Whatever shortcomings are there in traffic it is my responsibility to look after them and improvise. Minimum requirement is citizens must bear the responsibility from their side. There must be an infrastructure and we must work on facilitating those infrastructure and make regulations for prevention against accidents. Pedestrians must use zebra cross but they are not following traffic rules, so there is a congestion of people and vehicles even that has to be regulated by traffic police. We have more involvement in improving traffic performance without availability of resources.

FESTIVAL SEASON IS NEAR HOW HAVE THE TRAFFIC POLICE TAKEN SAFETY MEASURES DURING THE FESTIVAL SEASON?

Ensuring that no black market operate inside the valley. There should be adequate number of vehicles and prioritizing passenger’s safety and conveyance. When events are organized on road there is a roadblock as a result traffic police is seen negligent. If such events are to be organized we must designate a certain place rather than the road. The traffic flow is ruptured just by few minutes of road blockage so we must think about this.

WHAT ARE THE PRECAUTIONS TAKEN FOR PEOPLE TRAVELLING THROUGH HIGHWAYS WHILE RETURNING TO THEIR FAMILY DURING THE FESTIVAL?

We take all the parameters for security and safety. Our cell monitors about the outflow of people along with goods carried. From our side we check if someone is drinking while driving. If someone is caught drunk while driving strict action will be taken by the authorities. Public vehicles honking their way impatiently will be monitored. All the rules that have been laid out will be reinforced by the traffic police. If we understand our own part of duty it will be more than enough.

MESSAGE FOR YOUTHS:

Showing heroism by racing beyond the speed limits must be avoided at all cost. One should adopt safety on the road and traffic police are there for safety. A few minute pleasures could be a life changing calamity. We must think about this. Our life and others are equally important so the traffic police ensure protection and safety of the public and minimize road disasters in optimum level.

Dr. Man Bahadur K.C. Senior Cardiologist of Shahid Gangalal National Heart Centre has examined patients complaining with all kinds of heart disease. During our visit with Dr. K.C. with questions about heart disease in younger generations Dr. K.C enlightened us about how improper habits and lifestyle has promoted heart patient numbers in the context of Nepal. He also gave us information about nature of heart problems and prevention on a long run.

HOW OFTEN PATIENT COME TO VISIT YOU AT GANGA LAL HOSPITAL?

Old and new patients come for visit. Most heart disease last for longer time duration. Daily 500-600 patients from which 40% are new patients and 60% are follow up patients. Age groups from newborn to 90-100 years old come to Gangalal Hospital. Heart diseases are various types. Prevalent disease are high blood pressure, rheumatic fever and heart disease, heart attack, irregular heart beatings, hereditary heart disease, Cardiomyopathy -heart muscle disease that makes it difficult for heart to pump and other types of heart disease which are less visible. These patients come to visit for getting treatment in our hospital.

IN NEPAL WHAT IS THE STATUS OF HEART FUNCTIONING OF COMMON PEOPLE AS A WHOLE?

We have all kinds of heart diseases in Nepal. Common heart problem that is apparent worldwide is seen in Nepal also. Last 15 years there has been a revolution in the treatment of heart disease. Now Nepal has all the technical tools for diagnosis which are available in countries abroad. The cost of treatment of heart disease is relatively expensive. Earlier people who couldn’t afford the professional help and treatment died untimely. Mortality was high. Now with remittance inflow and foreign employment people have become financially stronger. Government has also decided to help significantly for the heart surgery/operation. As a result people have more access for better treatment at hospitals.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST FOR OPERATION?

It entirely depends upon the nature of disease. It can range from NPR 25000 TO NPR 5 Lakh. For the operation of a young boy or girl below 15 years government has made free of cost. Rheumatic heart disease patients will bear very few cost, it will be government’s prerogative that they are treated at minimum cost. Grants worth NPR 1 Lakh for the underprivileged are provided by the government which people have used.

WHAT IS THE CAUSE OF HEART DISEASE?

There are various type of heart disease. Heart attacks occur due to excess consumption, it was found in affluent class but even middle and lower level suffer from this disease. Tobacco is detrimental to heart. Oily food, obesity due to overweight, lack of exercise, mental stress, hereditary level is the causes of heart disease. Rheumatic fever from throat infection leads into heart disease. Not only in festivities but generally people must stop tobacco based products completely. Consume less quantity of red meat. Remove skin and fat if you have to eat meat products and stick to the limits. Oily, sugar coated foods shouldn’t be consumed for heart patient.

STUDENTS ARE FACING HEART DISEASE AND PROBLEMS. IS IT DUE TO TENSION AND ANXIETY?

Stress and heart disease doesn’t have direct linkage. If someone is always in stress then after he reach certain age he can have high blood pressure. If someone has throat infection during childhood then he must be treated on time. College students who fall in bad habit take toxic substance that leads to heart problems. Drinking must be on lower scale. Red meat has been researched by scientist and doctors and

it is not bad as it was expected. Red meat boosts cholesterol levels. It is not healthy diet.

DASHAIN IS APPROACHING, TELL US HOW MUCH MEAT WE CAN CONSUME FOR STAYING HEALTHY IN DASHAIN?

Fish and chicken, maybe once or twice a week. Red meat, perhaps once or twice in a month without using internal organs, must be properly cooked and fresh stock of meat and poultry should be used.

ANY PIECE OF ADVICE TO YOUNGER GENERATIONS?

Don’t use tobacco based products and other toxic substance that is harmful for health. Younger generation are lazy they don’t do regular exercise; sleep for late hours, not going at walks this habit must be corrected. Brisk walking once a day and physical fitness is a must for healthy heart.

BE MINDFUL WITH HEALTHY HEART IN

DASHAIN

“Don’t use tobacco based products and other toxic substance that is harmful for health

WHAT DOES DASHAIN MEAN TO YOU? TELL US ABOUT IMPORTANCE OF DASHAIN FESTIVAL?

Dashain is closely related to mythology and tantric manifestations. Lord Ram conquering Lanka after defeating Ravana. Secondly, Devi Mahatmya found in Markandeya Puran. Each year there are four Dashains. Others are Chaitra Dashain at spring season, Ashad and Marga Dashian known as gupt Navaratra. Autumn season sees Bada dashain which is celebrated in the common households. Dashain has no political affinities it is truly spiritual. This year the auspicious time for “tika” is 11:45. Kings of Gorkha earlier adopted the auspicious hour for receiving tika. Newars don’t have auspicious timing for tika. President and government officials seek auspicious time for taking tika but it is not mandatory for the common citizens. As per rituals after Devi dispersion we can receive tika from our elders. Newar communities call it Mwohni and in Maithili it is called Durga Puja. Shastras see it is symbolic to make offerings to god and tantric see sacrifice of animals to god and eating as Prasad. Scientific aspect says there are six seasons and it takes from sun transitions in zodiac signs. Festivals re-unite family members and they spend time in harmony forgetting pettiness, receive blessings. So in these aspects Dashain is important festival in our Country.

WHY IS DASHAIN CELEBRATED FOR NINE DAYS IS THERE ANY REASON BEHIND IT?

Navaratra embodies worshipping of nine avatars of Devi. There are nine planets in astrology known as navagrahas. First these nine grahas are worshipped to satisfy Devi. Then we celebrate after the worship of navagrahas. In our tradition we must satisfy the ancestral graves with “Pitripuja” if it is not done even if the god bestows upon us ancestors take it away whatever god has given to us. So first we do “Pitripuja” after that we do Navagraha puja. Finally, we celebrate the occasion of Dashain.

WHY DO WE GIVE BLESSINGS AFTER TIKA TO THE YOUNGER ONES?

Generally blessings are given for longevity of the lives of the younger lot. Also, may the younger receive the boon from the highest forms of god. For girls the blessings they get are, may they get power and virtues from Goddess Kali, the fiercest form of goddess Durga and anything negative in them will be destroyed and goodness stay with them forever. It is also motivational and build their self-esteem.

WHAT IS THE SIGNIFICANCE OF JAMARA AT THE TIME OF TIKA?

Seeds of barley or rice or corn are sown in the dark room as jamara in a container like an earthen pot or a tapara. Jamara which is yellow in colour, as it is grown in dark, is considered sacred. It is worn on head as Durga Mata’s Prasad on tenth day which is called “Vijaya Dashami”. It has therapeutic meaning also because Banaspati is the source of nourishment for human body and Shastra says barley, rice, corns are consumed by human body and it is an offering also. Barley Jamara is very good for health if we extract and drink its juice.

WHAT IS THE REASON FOR SACRIFICING ANIMALS TO GODDESS?

Myth was that Kaal which means death had two teeth for chewing out the life of the living beings. It activates twice in Spring and another in Autumn and if it needs to chew then it had to be people. So, instead of people the animals were sacrificed as it would content him and make us secured. Also, for suppressing the negative energy sacrifices are made. In villages temple are either located at top or at bottom not near the house so sacrifices are offered there to ward off evil spirits and negative energy of that area.

Students Perception on Long Festival Vacation

The trend of spending long vacation at home or at maternal home is almost over. These days, vacations are for exploring. I strongly recommend schools to unleash students from Dashain-Tihar homework. Spare those studies especially those long never ending homework for each day of the vacation. Let, students learn in their own. Clamp those rigorous study tricks only for school days. Dashain-Tihar vacation is the best part of our schooling days. It means doing something new, visiting new place, trying adventure, in one word it’s about Learning. If you have plans for your Dashain-Tihar vacation and you follow the plan that’s the best joyous period of the year but if you are spending it at home just in television and online social media, that’s a total waste of your precious time. So, help children plan, help them make the best of their vacation. It’s no time to rest; it’s time to pack bags and travel.

Usha Kashyap Public HealthYeti Health Science Academy

When all the noise seems pleasant, weather keeps on dragging you to look at it bragging about how cool and soothing it is then you should know that DASHAIN is here.

Well dashain is that one festival which brings happiness, a long awaited vacation of the year, yummy food stuffs and loads and tons of assignments and homework for students. We get the longest holiday from work, school and many other things you are involved in and soak in its traditional and cultural values!

Amidst this let’s talk about how schools and colleges give a long vacation to students and is it

appropriate? It’s not that getting long vacation brings negative change or changes the person but the students gets really very lazy and many of them harm their regular studying habit in the name of celebration. They get tons of assignments to do but they pile things up to do later just to play around.

This surely does hamper their study. And another thing as we all know everything has two sides-good and bad! Dashain is that one festival which makes you realize that you have not only few members in the family but a lot of people. We don’t get to see them on regular basis and Dashain is the best time of the year to know them.

You get to learn many things from them. You get to know traditional and cultural values more closely too. So getting long vacations does surely ruins the student's habit of studying and it becomes hard for them to get things together later on! So no matter how long vacations you get, never forget what you have to do. Chilling is good for 3/4 days and you should better understand what is important. Celebrate with love and joy this Dashain! Have a prosperous one.

Students Perception on Long Festival Vacation

In my opinion, the whole notion of giving holidays to students, ranging from kindergarten to college is quite redundant. Giving out holidays doesn’t mean a one month freedom from all the school activities and just sleep all you want and do whatever you want, but study. In many developed countries, student are given more than 2 or 3 month off from their respective college not to go out and play all day but to learn new things. You see when person is doing a single thing for a long amount of time then he/she will feel little big jagged and his/her brain will function as it should. The main conundrum is, in underdeveloped countries like ours, student never try to utilize their holidays. From Dashain to Tihar, they get almost a month off but 90% of them never use it in a proper way. According to me giving out holidays in big and important festivals like Dashain and Tihar is necessary as well, due to the fact that people had to celebrate this big festival with their family.

My suggestion to all the colleges and school would be that they should incorporate different means of learning techniques in student’s daily life. For example, giving them a huge burden of homework will not serve any purpose rather give them an assignment to travel somewhere and learn about people. Vacation and free time is all about exploring yourself and knowing the world around you.

Sumita Timsina Amrit Science CampusEnvironment Science

I don’t prefer long vacations in Dashain. It is difficult for working people to stay home for long gap. Students have almost forgotten what they have taught in school if they spend long holidays. They should also recall what has been taught and do their home assignments. They must read all those topics covered by their teacher and when they return back from vacation it becomes easy for the teacher to move ahead with the course. Revision during Dashain holidays is mandatory. When people have more free time they don’t focus about their responsibility. They want to travel, go on hangouts, shopping and adults indulge in drinking, meeting at clubs, spending hard earned money frivolously. When they are working in an organization they learn to save money. Moderation is good for everything. If we are not able to curb spending habits we are wasting our time and resources. It takes lot of time and hard work to earn money so we must spend it on a budget. Planning time management can help preparedness for better future. So if we spend entire day on timely basis we will be able to achieve more and focused. Always remember present time is the most important time.

Interesting facts about DashainDashain Special

Despite all the political instability that is going around: Dashain is so in the air. Here are a few interesting facts about Dashain

Ever wondered why we play swings particularly during Dasahain? Because, it is believed that once a year we should leave the ground and be in the air and what’s a more auspicious occasion than much love Dashain.

Although there is not exact reason to why, Dashain is represented by Malashree Dhun. We can hear it on every television channel, radio station and in the background music during Dashain everywhere and anytime.

Jamara or the holy grass has a lot of scientific importance. It helps in eradicating many diseases too. It is an important herb that cures itchiness and sunburns too.

Dashain commemorates the great victory of the good over the wicked. The main celebration glorifies the triumph of good over evil and is symbolized by goddess Durga slaying the terribledemon Mahisasur, who terrorized the earth in the guise of a brutal water buffalo. The first nine days signify the nine days of ferrous battle between goddess Durga and the demon Mahisasur.

The tenth day is the day when Mahisasur was slain and the last five days symbolize the celebration of the victory with the blessing of the goddess.

Dashain is one festival when we can see the real Kathmandu. During this time most of the∙ migrants leave Kathmandu and go towards their home town. The roads are clean and the valley is peaceful. However, other places of the country get crowded.

Significance of flying Kites during Dashain festival

Dashain Special

Dashain is not just about worshipping “Shakti” in the form of Goddess Durga. It is

also a period of rejoicing, celebrating the occasion with social gathering, sharing thoughts and feelings to one-another with no ill-will, playing cards, swings, enjoying scrumptious home-cooked meals, visiting temples, gathering friends, watching television for a homebody like me and flying kites. The latter is enjoyed by most of the Nepalese in the Dashain vacations. Look up in the sky and you see small square objects flying one place to another, dancing in swirls and motion and displaying vibrant colors like the rainbow makes your heart jump with joy. This is one big season where the young and the old bury their hatchet and celebrate together. Age bars for enjoyment has never been an option and will never be. You are unified; you stay close to each other and discuss every colors of life. You become thrift to the atmosphere of calm exuberance. If you are lonely then I advise- don’t be, mingle and enjoy this blessed time of a year by choosing any one from these.

I am a grown-up but let me tell you my experience about Dashain has not changed so much. I relish Dashain with same vitality as I did earlier in childhood. As a grown person, I can call my own shots without my Parent’s navigation. I can choose what works best for me and there is a whole day where you can do something or the other .Flying Kites marks the auspiciousness of the occasion. Going down to the history, flying Kites were used in militaries to scatter propaganda leaflets over hostile forces, while for others it was a recreational activity- the royal’s and the aristocrats would spend quality time by flying kites. We are part of the latter thought process. Every autumn we engage in aerial display. We fly kites for our enjoyment but also to show our skills and aggression in a competitive spirit. You try to oust another kite flyer by making clever decisions based on winds and cutting the opponent’s line in the aerial battle. From morning to evening the sky is a vivid battle zone for kite flyers and if you thought the game ended here then you are trifle wrong! The craze of flying kites is among children as well

and they are the major participants of this contest. They are also kite runners who chase after falling Kites which have been cut from the lines in the air and anticipating the kites flow in their direction and land at the nearest spot. This culture is also tied with our dreams. Man is a dreamer, he dreams to achieve the unattainable and pushes his limits and manages to attain them. The invention of kites also traced the same venture.

In Nepalese context, we have Kites made from Lokta papers. It is more expensive compared to Indian and Chinese kite papers and has an advantage of maneuvering easily up in the air due to some weightage in the material. Some people who are drawn to technology and the internet they prefer staying indoors this became more addictive than flying kites in the open. The hospitality sector has reaped the benefit of this occasion by becoming tourist’s attraction point and organizing events like “Changa Chait”.Kites have also spirituality linkages. It is said to bring good luck and fortune, remembering and honoring your ancestors, heavenly blessings etc. There are lots of perspectives on flying kites I think each to its own. But let us remember we are celebrating in the true spirits, we are making our self and our god happier by marking the auspiciousness. We are in a harmony with Dashain’s joyous mood. My only concern is be safe and avoid injury to yourself. But, just don’t be there watching it get into action and you will be aligned with the spirits of our culture and traditions.

Women are the Nation's Role ModelYouth Story

The term “Women” is very large in the context of our universe. One see women in gender as

female beings or counterparts to men. They form as couple for producing off springs. They are in the role of mother, wife, daughter, sister, aunt, niece, grandmothers and girlfriend. If we view the “Woman” not subjectively confined to a gender. We go deeper and find meaning which is preserved within the layers of our society and mankind. In Hindu Upanishads, feminine energy is the essence of universe. The ‘Devi Sukta’ hymn of Rig Veda says the one who creates all matter and consciousness. The eternal and the infinite, the metaphysical and empirical reality (Brahman) the soul of everything. No wonder why we call her “Dharti Mata”. In Nepal, we say we are the children of Nepal aama. Nepal is our motherland.

Before talking about Womanhood, our focus comes about situation of our country Nepal. A Himalayan country situated in South Asia rich in natural resources and heritage is economically one of the poorest countries of the world. Apart from being a small county in the world’s map. The country was ruled by Kings and Queens of Ranas, Mallas, Shah Dynasty. Although the father of our nation Lt. King Prithivi Narayan Shah was the first King of unified Nepal. On, 28 May 2008 the newly elected Constituent assembly declared Nepal as Federal Democratic Republic abolishing 240 year old

monarchy.

Our society earlier and till today is patriarchal society. Due to lack of quality education and awareness gender discrimination has been the sole factor for Nepal to become a lower human development state. The status of women is determined by

the patriarchal social system, values and

women’s right protected by the state policy for development of women. Women’s situation is very poor in health, education, participation, income generation, self-confidence, decision making and human rights.A large part of women’s work is not even considered as an economic activity. If you talk about liberalization then the irony is an independent women is a female who can do whatever she wants but with the support of her husband, surrounded by family opinions and has social boundaries. Our society must understand she is not an independent woman if she is not set free to make her own decisions. It is her right and she deserves to stick to it.

An educated women starts out by knowing her basic rights to what role she should play to bring the needs of changing society. Men and Women are the rope with both the ends. They must hold ends of each side for the rope to extend and boundaries dissolve. Stop ignorance towards addressing women courteously and make unprofessionalism locked inside a box. Remove doubts and make your mind clear on logic because gender is as organic as air to breath. Stop toxic

mindsets and give each other their deserving space beyond the rules and regulations of law. We are a human being-the highest form of creation of our creator. Household is not only the area of women.

It is a part of their duty but they have also much work for them to make our Country a developed nation. If we go down the line when we talk of powerful women leaders of all time right from Zenobia, Cleopatra to Rani Lakshmi Bai to Joan of Arc, Indira Gandhi, Margaret Thatcher, Queen Victoria these ladies have challenged the status quo making lasting reforms presided over their country for decades and bringing prosperity and cultural revolutions. Our country is fortunate to have women as President and other leading professions for their contribution for development

and prosperity over a long haul. We should support not by conflicts and discrimination but parallel with men to fill the void of our country’s overall development. Here is for the spirits of women who are the unsung heroes and our role models.

A FATHER OF CONTEMPORARY NEPALI LANGUAGE AND CULTURE

1920 Patan, Bakhutole. Shankar Raj Joshi and Rajkumari Joshi gave birth to their first son. Working at Mohan Shumsher Jung Bahadur Rana’s palace, Shankar Raj brought up his son Satya Mohan Joshi with care. Due to long travelling distance from Patan, Lalitpur to Maharajgunj he thought it would be best if he rented a house in Maharajgunj and raise his son there while back home his wife would be expecting another baby soon. His childhood was colorful. One of his friend called Jhalak Ram the son of the landlord at tender age of 13-14 were playing outside when all of sudden a tree infront of them swayed wildly. The whole world was rocking to and fro and at tender age it was his landlord who informed him a huge earthquake had hit Nepal. Many buildings had collapsed and remaining ones were fragile. His father came from office in a hurry and left for home. They cleared the rented house and while they were returning back heavy destruction had tolled the life of surrounding environment. The year was 16th January 1934A.D.

His education began right from the

home. He learned alphabets at home and later enrolled to Durbar High School In Kathmandu. As a bright person, he completed Bachelors degree from Trichandra College. 1944, Satya Mohan joined the government sector. He was the first Director of Archeological and Cultural Department in 1959. He established Rastriya Naach Ghar –National theatre in Kathmandu. Archeological Garden in Patan and Archeological Museum in Taulihawa. National Painting Museum in Bhaktapur was also initiated by him.In 1960, when King Mahendra seized the power at his hands and he fled to China. He taught Nepali at Peking Broadcasting institute. He researched Arniko the great sculptor of Malla dynasty who migrated China in early 1260 A.D.He set up Arniko White Dagoba Gallery in Kirtipur ,Kathmandu. He is not only regarded as a successful administrator but also the foremost preserver of folk culture and its diversity. He is a successful dramatist, playwright, poet, research analyst. His folk tales, folk riddles, folk lifestyle and its development is the result of his devotion and hardwork. Eastern Nepal those days didn’t have

any recreational work. The local life and the environment played big role in his life.Western and Eastern literature was his interest area. In the process of printing his articles in the monthly paper Antarang he was introduced to editor Gopal Prasad Risal who played key role for his development. Their work in publication Hamro Lok Sanskriti got him his first Madan Puraskar in 1956. He states due to our changing habits, outside interventions we are losing hold of our natural habits , forgetting our nationality , identity and fundamental nature. Our multilingual, multicultural society and conglomeration makes Nepal the hub of cultural station. Cultural philosophy is present in his books. His research on Arniko and Coinage of Nepal is a benchmark for aspiring scholars. He received 2nd Madan Puraskar for his publication Nepali Rastriya Mudra. The Ministry of Culture , Tourist and Civil aviation honored him for making immense contribution to Nepali language, literature and culture with “Litterateur of the Century”.

He has more than 60 publications in various fields.December 2014, he was admitted to Vayodha Hospital at Balkhu in the Capital after he complained breathing and chest problems, he was treated for gastritis and urinary tract infection but stable health. He is the Chancellor of Nepal Bhasa Academy. It works for the preservation and promotion of the Nepal Bhasa and cultural heritage of the Newars. He won third Madan Puraskar in 1971 for his work in Karnali Lok Sanskriti. He is an example of multifaceted, multi talented personality. We regard him father of contemporary Nepali language and culture.

Students Corner

“Impacts of Long Festive-vacation on Education ”

Nepal is rich in many cultural and religious traditions and celebrations. The varieties of

festivals and occasion we celebrate carry its own significance. Dashain and Tihar are considered to be the most prominent and anticipated among the festivals of the Nepalese as it is often celebrated with the zeal and in most joyful ways. They play an important role for all people celebrating including students as it teaches us to forget our enmity and embrace one another in a bond of love, tolerance and understanding strongly cementing the religious tolerance, social harmony and national integrity as in whole.

The holidays sanction from Dashain to Chatth (usually from late September to late October) is the longest in the academic calendar providing the student with an ample time to partake in rituals and traditions of seasonal holidays. However, for decades, there has been a lot of debate among the teachers, parents and policy makers on whether to entitle students to longer holidays or not.

The ways in which schools and colleges are functioning in recent

years encouraging just to mug up the particular syllabus and obtain more marks and their strategies of 'pumping knowledge' is decreasing the ability to understand. The system may produce economically independent people but not emotionally and socially interactive ones which decrease the quality of society and interaction among its students resulting in stress and often suicidal too. The extra burden of waking up very early in the morning, observing 'useless' dress codes for school, attending monotonous discourses of teachers for hours, sitting a long period of time at the desk completing homework and assignments etc is making students a person from strongest nerve to yawn. It is demolishing the creativity and concentration simply because our teaching method doesn't stimulate creativity and innovation. Very few and limited highly budgeted schools and colleges have the provision of taking students to the enriching tours and treks, summer camps, exhibitions etc and student from rest of the institution has no practicality of the mugged up theories they learned which stuck their creativity to the certain point and doesn't let them improve it.

So longer holidays are very crucial for students as it provides an opportunity to learn the lessons of life on its own term and make free and wide decision with their understanding and choice. The holidays during festival provides an opportunity to meet and travel with families, relatives, and friends who live a long distance. It plays an important role to add structure to our social lives and connect us with our families and backgrounds. They give us distractions from day to day exhausting routine of life and give us some inspiration to remember the most important things and moments of life. It provides with time and ability to change the routine

and motivates to do their further studies with more enthusiasm. Some students who have earlier neglected their studies try to utilize holiday to make up arrears in their studies. Holidays provide them recreation and rest. It replenishes the lost energy and vigor. It removes our tension and worries at least for some time. It cools down the heat and dust of student life and improvises the concentration and good physical and mental health and alleviates the anxiety of workload. Most importantly, students can indulge in creative and innovative stuff and expand and explore their inner talents and hobbies which ultimately kills the boredom and abhor resulted from following the same routine every day. Generally, they pass their time visiting friends, reading books, visiting new places of their choice. It energizes our exhausted bodies and worn out minds.

It is true that many parents face problem during long school holidays as their children waste their time by spending it on undesirable activities such as playing too much computer games, getting into bad companies, spending priceless time doing unproductive works; to name the few. This kind of wrong activities results in forgetting what they have been learning. However, such problems can be solved through proper planning, guidance and time management.Though there are disadvantages for students to have long school holidays, the benefits outweigh the disadvantages. Therefore, I agree student should have long holidays.

8 Reasons Why Dashain is Awesome

As a child, most of us probably loved Dashain simply because it meant delicious food, new clothes, receiving money and not having to go to school for a whole month!

The everyday feast of delicious food items, playing cards scattered all over the carpet, colorful kites flying alongside clouds fill our boring lives with pretty colors that nothing can ever match.

Things may have changed since then but the love for Dashain remains, although it may only be for the stress free few weeks we get out of our hectic lives.

Here are a few reasons why Dashain is awesome as it is:

Everyone gets into the holiday spirit

With lovely kites flying right above our heads and mangal dhun being played all over, everyone is in mood for some chill time with family and friends.

You can look across the room and you’ll find everyone’s faces lightened up with bright holiday spirit!

Our favorite vacation time

It is without a doubt that Dashain is our favorite vacation time, with holidays crossing over 30 to 40 days (of unlimited fun)!

You can go travelling in the woods or plan the treks you have always wanted to go. Even with such long holiday, we don’t get enough of it!

The perfect excuse to buy lots of new clothes

The best part about Dashain? There are a lot of shopping to do!

No, mom would not scold us for buying 10 new pairs of black jeans at this time of the year just because it’s Dashain!

Literally an excuse for all the shop-a-holics out there!

You get to meet your long-lost cousins

People from all over and outside the country come home to celebrate Dashain with their families.

While aunts can be some sort of pain with so many rounds of questions and answering to horribly planned interviews can be disappointing, it is still nice to have them around.

Well maybe not, but the cousins you like are coming too, and there will be no bounds to badmaasi when you meet up. *evil grin*

There are a wee bit of delicious items to eat

Yeah, with so many people in the house, there’s definitely going to be a lot of food. Dashain delicacies like goat curry, sekuwa, are mouth-watering and even if they are cooked some other time, they do not hold the Dashain taste or vibe!

You get to earn money for just putting tika and jamara

What’s the easiest way to earn money, you ask? *smirks*Be born as a Nepali (preferably a girl), have the elders put on some red tika on your forehead, get some jamara and you are going to earn a lot of money!

The beauty of mangal dhun

Mangal dhun has to be one of the most beautiful tunes of Nepal. The coming of Dashain is marked with managal dhun playing all over the place!

Such songs actually give notion that the festival season is on — it is how songs have been part of our every emotion and part of the celebrations.

Play cards and not be called ‘juwadi’

Dashain essentially calls for cards. This is probably the only time in the year when you can freely play cards without being called ‘juwadi’.

There may be so many variations but we will rather stick to jutpatti, our absolute favorite since the childhood. Because, who wants to get messed up in the marriage thing at this age itself ? *sarcastic laugh*

HELLO DASHAIN

Dozens of kites flying like a galaxy of colorful stars, bud of marigold about to bloom with a golden spark, highway roads grabbing a glimpse of heavy vehicles and the passenger way to their hometown, thousands of animals to be slaughtered being imported, vacations for the celebration from the workplace and families being gathered together; these are some foreshadows the major festive season carries along. Eye-catching trendy designs on mannequins, crowded markets, grand offers, discounts and attractive bonus are also some hints that the Dashain has just begun. Long and firm bamboo tied with strong ropes to create a swing is definitely a happy platform for children (even the adults).

Valley roads with minimal noises evoke

the initiation of late September and the termination of monsoon inviting the cheerful sights of 'Bada Dashain'. The scent of newly worn clothes and the delicious meal being cooked. We all love it. Don't we? We all have been hearing this catchword since our early childhood. 'Dashain aayo' 'khaula piula' 'kaha bata lyaula?' 'chori lyaula' 'Dhat, papi ma ta chuttai basumla'. That epitomize 5 fingers of our hand which means Dashain is near, celebrations must be done, but where should we bring from?, Let's steal, Phew! No, I'll better stay separated. Hence, it's believed that the thumb is isolated from rest of our fingers.

Dashain is widely-known, auspicious and the most prominent festival of Hindus. Devotees worship mata Durga and her manifestations for peace and prosperity. This national festival lasts for 15 consecutive days beginning with 'Ghatasthapana' and ending at 'Kojagrat Purnima'. At the very first day, we sow some field crop seeds on 'tapari' or a tiny pot and observe the germination for next few days. The sprout continues to be the 'Jamara' which goes out perfect with 'rato tika'. ‘Rato tika nidar ma talaka talkiyo' various song have been written on this festival among which this one is heard innumerable times (Esp. During 'antakchiri').

The next celebration is a 'Fulpati' which denotes flowers, leaves and plant. Fulpati is followed by 'Maha Ashtami' and 'mahanavami'. Mahaasthami involves prayers to the Durga Bhawani,

Kalimata and animals are also sacrificed to these goddess.

The working tools, machineries and vehicles are worship during mahanavami that believe to avoid any kind of accidents throughout the year. The most awaited and the crucial day for the biggest celebration is 'Bijaya Dashami'. We receive ‘Tika & Jamara' with tons of well wishes, blessings and love from our elders on this day. We also continue receiving tika jamara till the last day of dashain (Kojagrat purnima).

According to Hindu Mythology, the monster named 'Mahisasur' was the evil spirit who caused terrible sufferings to humans. The wicked demon had a great battle with Durga Bhawani. And the ultimate success of goddess on the 10th day is regarded as the victory of good over evil as the happiest bestow of celebration.

Bijaya Dashami or Dashain is a festival of victory, peace, love, prosperity, efflorescence, harmony, tranquility, bliss, concordance and invocation. It symbolizes the triumph of goodness over evil. Dashain is a feast of rejoicing, unity, togetherness, integrity, blessedness, and joyfulness.

The Little joy of Grains

What is that”, he asked me pointing towards a woman's forehead, He was an UK

national and came here in the Project related to the Post-Quake. I turned my head and saw the women with “Tika” (rice mixed red color). I replied him “well, it’s the little joy of grain, we put as an auspicious luck and blessing from God.

I had never noticed that, this little grain of joy that we Nepalese put in our forehead comes as curiosity to people from another culture. “Tika” has been such an immense part of our life that, we merely feel any odd to see unless someone else points out.

I realize how rich we are at culture our norms and beliefs. Even the symbol of tika holds such strong stories and meaning behind it. Rice is the daily consumption; it’s the Nepalese everyday basic and survival. And we fill our forehead with Rice mix in red color- tika, that what we call it. Putting Tika on forehead also means bringing luck and getting blessed with fulfillment in life. It is also a sign of devotion to gods. And the tika is a much celebrated

and integral part of Hindu religious practice. Let us take any religious ritual to perform; one is incomplete without putting Tika on forehead. Depending upon the diversity of culture, region, culture and occasion, tika has also comes in different color, say, While Brahmins chettris and most of the community mix the little grain with red color, The tamang, Sherpa community put the grains as simple as white, but Putting Tika holds an important part in all the community. Tika just not is fun and provides blessings but it is the common ritual followed by all the community.Putting tika holds such a strong power in the Hindu Community, we see married women putting tika as symbol of their purity of marriage, which shows their love and loyalty to their husband. Dashain which is the biggest festival of Nepalese, which is incomplete without putting tika, On this day tika- the little rice grains is put from elders and receive their blessing. Also another big festival which is “Tihaar” or let’s say “bhai tika”- a day celebrated by brothers and sisters, it is also celebrated with putting 7 different color of tika as symbol of sibling bonding be as colorful as the rainbow etched linearly on their forehead.

Tracing back into our bulky Religious pages, we do not get any such peculiar evidence of Putting tika as a ritual as mentioned, but it was always there was also a beauty thing wore by women, however, though we have no such evidence or mentioning of having put tika it has always been an integral part of the Hindu community, serving its purpose as an embedded ritual in everyday life. For devotees who pray at home every day, the tika is a customary part of their appearance. And to offer

tika first to god and afterward to self is considered as cleaning the self aura. Tika holds such a strong spiritual power and believe that, if a person goes out from home for few days or abroad, or make any kind of long distance travel, he or she is bid goodbye with putting tika in forehead, there is no wonder to see any Hindu with tika in Many International Airports, it might look strange to others, but it’s just an integral part of Hindu Culture.

Religious practice permits the tika to be put only after one has taken a bath and cleansed the body. Also, it can be taken as a Sanctification of the soul, after all demands bodily hygiene as well. This little joy of grain has been so strongly established in that none the ritual is completed without putting tika! It has now become a culture, which seems deep rooted. It is at once, a symbol of worship, purity and religious men giving it important significance in the daily practice of the Hindu culture. The tika is put in between the eyebrows at forehead where we think we have the third eye located, it is put there because it is also believed that it brings a positive vibe and gives one an spiritual push to perform, it is considered the point at which creation began. The tika is said to focus energy and increase concentration.

This Little joy of grain that is put in a Hindu forehead carries its own culture and meaning and get an individual tied to their roots. Tika cleanses the aura and make people bind with positivity. It gives a natural healing power, the power of belief and settles the faith in self. With the Dashain month, let enjoy our tradition let's preserve it and enjoy the Blessing in the little grains. Happy Dashain!

ELUCIDATE ON THE SITUATION OF ARTS AND ARCHITECTURE IN NEPAL:

It is painful to tell you that it was in a depleting state and after the big earthquake many structures collapsed right in front of us. There was an opportunity for using this resource to its potential limits but unfortunately we lost out on this aspect also.

YOU LEFT A WELL PAYING JOB AND TOOK A STEP IN PRESERVING THE ARTS AND ARCHITECTURES BY RECONSTRUCTING IT. TELL US THE STORY BEHIND IT:

I couldn’t stand the sight of destruction. Rather than being a motivator for others, I thought if I didn’t do it no one else will. So in my own prerogative I entered this field.

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE CONTRIBUTIONS FROM YOUR PERSONAL EFFORT, SHARE WITH US.

When I entered in this field at 90s, the trend of demolishing old buildings and making infrastructure for new homes had prevailed. So many nice architectures and beautifully designed houses were destroyed for modern buildings I found it unbearable. I would never be satisfied if I didn’t do anything about it. I couldn’t watch the destruction from a bird-eye view. At Bhaktapur I bought a pen for chicken. People thought I was insane to leave a well paid job. I reconstructed it instead of using as construction material of new homes. After completing restoration it became talk of the town and honored me as a first person of Nepal to receive UNESCO award. How ugliness can be transformed to traditional style of architecture, I set that example. Tony Hagen’s book one of the first cement houses was converted to traditional house and dedicated to him known as Tony Hagen house at Bhaktapur. I reconstructed a new home based on Malla dynasty which is also known as Basuki ghar. Besides that, reconstruction of Malpi College building at Baluwatar was another assignment. I wanted to build unique school based on education and architecture. Out of 75, I have done 11 so far. People’s perception towards heritage have increased. The makers are the destroyers in our Country. So awareness can be created by bringing the community people. I am making museum of stone and art so that stolen sculptures recovered will be displayed. It will be dramatized to the visitor entering this museum see the monumental despair. Making schools at Bhaktapur, Panauti and its work is increasing day by day.

WE CAME TO KNOW THAT YOUR FATHER WANTED YOU BECOME A LAWYER BUT YOU HAD THE CRAVING FOR LEARNING FINE ARTS. YOU STUDIED THE COURSE FOR 2 YEARS WITHOUT GETTING NOTICED BY YOUR FATHER. WHERE DID YOU GET THE INSPIRATION FROM?

Art was my passion. I saw Bhaktapur Durbar Square, I visited this place a lot. After S.L.C I wanted to study fine arts. But I joined law school at the request of my father. Luckily second year I had two shifts and I joined morning shift and day shift I studied at Lalit Kala Campus. I remember coming to Bhotahity and Ratnapark but I saved pocket money and made sculptures at home. My father was astounded and financed for both the studies.

IN NEPAL WHAT IS THE SIGNIFICANCE OF NATIONAL HERITAGE IN YOUR OPINION?

Our country is naturally gifted country. Due to some miscreants our country has been robbed. 40 years back Kathmandu was the heritage of arts and architecture. Due to commercialization these monumental heritages are destroyed which is very sad. Even if we can’t save the whole city we can save some parts by making it vehicle free. By restoring the architecture and old creations as in the Newari tradition I look forward into this.

TELL US ABOUT NAMUNA GHAR;

It was a farmer’s home. When I bought it, there were chickens raised in the three stories. Restoring it traditionally was like old wine in a new bottle. Kitchen, bathroom and rooms are all equipped with sound facilities. The attraction has increased because it is an old house having modern facilities. Recent earthquake didn’t hamper the structure. It has also proved traditional buildings were earthquake resistant. It received UNESCO award also.

WHAT ARE THE PROBLEMS IN ARCHITECTURE FIELD OF NEPAL?

In Nepal post earthquake, the builders lobbied that the buildings must be based on gradient and pillar system. The traditional style of construction has suffered from it.

HOW HAS MODERNIZATION AND URBANIZATION AFFECTED THE STRUCTURES OF KATHMANDU VALLEY? WHO SHOULD TAKE THE INITIATION TO SOLVE THIS PROBLEM?

Government, Department of Archaeology, Ministry of local development should have taken the initiative but they seem to have destroyed the most. The reason is motive for earning money by demolishing the national heritage and also due to lack of consciousness.

YOUR FUTURE PLANS:

Panauti is my ambitious project. Even though government has not shown more interest the citizens have come forward. After restoration you will be able to see the change. Tourism will flourish. The more preservation work takes place tourist inflow will increase. By then many architectures may get depleted said Puri.

STUDENT’S INTEREST IN CULTURE AND ARCHITECTURE HAVE DECREASED, YOUR VIEWS ON THIS TREND:

Parents will not invest for children to study any subject that has no scope for their future. If the government policy is not up to the benchmark then nothing better will happen. We must have a new mindset.

WHAT IS YOUR MESSAGE FOR ALL OF US?

Firstly, study subject which you find interesting don’t do it because of compulsion from Parents, peers or overly large ambition. Secondly, if you love your country you must be able to bring the change and see the nation as developed. Digest the transitional phase and don’t rebuke.

A CRICKETER'S VISION OF IMPROVING CRICKET IN NEPAL

At first it was matter of passing time and getting together with friends. Slowly cricket became

my passion. Selection of under- 19 tournament was going on. Fortunately the spot where I was playing cricket match got the chance to form a team in the Kalaiya Cricket Club and I was there and got selected to play at district level. This is how it began. Once, I was in under- 19 team I knew this was for me. I loved this game. I would play martial arts and football also. I feel cricket has brought me name and fame. I cannot take cricket away from my life. All the learning I did and my thought process molded through cricket. I took my education alongside. I thought about completing my masters’ level and did it successfully. Now, I don’t have any regrets of not completing my education. Infact after completing Masters Degree for me it was my second biggest achievement after cricket. These two facets gave me the edge over others.

Only being cricketer was not enough there are many cricketers like me and if I only did masters there were other people who have already done that. There would be no differentiation from the crowd. I have done MBA. My cricket life went by very quickly. Those 17 years just passed away quickly. If you love something you have the inner courage and drive to push the limits. I spent 20 years as a player.

Starting from Under- 19 competition. From 1997 till 2017 I am in this field. It is not a career where you play cricket and feed your family.

Cricket gives advantage over other aspects of life. When I played those matches I had more fun memories, it was the best time of my life. Our team has won more matches than we have lost. We went to New Zealand and

won to Pakistan and Bangladesh and surprised ourselves and everybody. We played with England and Zimbabwe and lost the match. At that time I felt our team was good enough to play the tournament. Those matches stood out.

After that ACC TROPHY and division match was played and we won. It changed our belief system and gave more self-confidence. Now, Cricket has become more professional than it used to be, we are at the higher division, played world cup also .People are more concerned about our performances. So it has become bigger and better. My aim is to get worldwide recognition for the Nepalese cricket team. Their hard work has made them make their mark from the rest. It is also a matter of country’s pride. I am happy to be the part of this process.

Earlier I was a cricketer and now the coach for Under-19, so the role has changed. We try to bring the best out of youngsters and happy to contribute anyway. We have not been able to devise plan for looking after the players for their growth and commitments so it is not fair to comment on plans after retirement. No government body or concerned authorities like Cricket association have a concrete plan for grooming our players. Our country has been going through transition period

for long time and the past 10 -15 years have been hard for the nation. So we cannot expect government to take care of cricket or sports in particular. In a meantime, there has to be process where each and every aspect of life has to move forward but this has not happened sadly. It has to do with policy making of the country which is not so great. It looks good on paper to read the outlines but on the implementation part we fall short. That has happened with sports field. Allowances, insurance coverage, accommodation, packages for gold medalist are often heard but not yet carried out. The emphasis lies on the process of playing cricket for under -19 World Cup. If the government is not interested in private sector’s effort it becomes very hard to facilitate what we hoped for. Planning has been for so long for example like Nepal Tourism Board in 1998 they wanted ACC CUP match to promote our country through cricket match but continuity was not there at all. We don’t have proper ground here, infrastructure is lacking and the initiation has to come from our government. Other country has raced past us like Afghanistan. If system doesn’t change the future is very dim.

There are no domestic cricket tournaments only private leagues are running. We have hard time selecting players. In a four years time Nepal has the potential of becoming like Afghanistan only if we choose to be like them. We have to take actions right away and do it from the scratch. Are we willing to invest that amount of money, interest in cricket? Not 10% of their effort goes in our country. Investment has returns not wastages and what we are doing is wasting time and energy and not investing. ICC is taking keen interest in solving our major problems and hope they do it early as they can. If it is done we have bright future ahead. Our future in Cricket will be changing soon. All we need is to show more interest and involvement in games.

A memorable trip to Manakamana Temple

23 August 2016. This date is marked by the auspiciousness of an outdoor trip at Manakamana. It was Saturday; I got up early in the morning. I was happy that it was a weekend after a busy week at the office. I went out of the house walking briskly towards the main gate, pausing for taking fresh air in the morning, birds were leaving their nest and soaring up above in the sky. The otherwise congested road now with only few people in their sports outfit doing morning walks and stretching their body. Shops raising their shutters open and preparing for daily business from the morning. After this observation, I came back home and went to kitchen for breakfast, time passed by and other family members had risen and were busy with their morning chores. My sister had come from her hostel for few days and while the breakfast was served a car came to our porch and two men emerged. They were distant friends and they had come to visit us. We shared breakfast and chat with one another. While we were talking we planned to spend rest of the day on a journey. It was decided that we were going to Manakamana because firstly I had never been there and secondly we didn’t want to stay home idle. When we mentioned our plan to my Parents they agreed impromptu. My father provided some money to cover the cost of cable car tickets and some pocket allowances to me and my sister. My mother who knew the plan immediately filled a bag with offerings to goddess which includes incense sticks, fruits, flowers, vastras, egg and other materials for puja.

We left exactly at 9:30 in the morning. We had a private vehicle so we travelled leisurely as per the convenience. Although it was a long journey of 4hrs 45 minutes from Kamalpokhari. The driving distance of 140.2k.m was covered by frequent stops at tea shops for refreshments. We had enough goodies to keep away boredom and chat about our upcoming destination. The shore road of the highways passed by miles after miles as our vehicle moved ahead. The urban part of Kathmandu was replaced by panorama of hills and mountain, lush green trees, traditional mud and brick houses. As we moved closer to the destination the roads were winding and we travelled meticulously. Our vehicle passed the check post point and after some time our car stopped at Manakamana’s Cable Car office. When we got out from the car at first, I saw a huge hill up ahead and below it the flowing river. The amazing thing that got my attention was the cable cars, there were moving up and down the hill in a motion. From the parking spot it looked like flying objects, the cable line was barely visible. One of us decided to get the boarding pass of cable car. While others formed a line in front of Cable Car Office. I saw people with offerings waiting in the procession. Some had hen in baskets and few also carried goats for sacrifice to the goddess. Manakamana temple is situated at top, 1300 meter hill, 105 kilometers to the west of Kathmandu. Mana meaning heart and Kamana meaning wish. It is believed that the Goddess Bhagwati rewards those who make pilgrimage to her shrine by granting their wishes. It also unfolds a monumental legendary story of King Rama

Shah and Lakhan Thapa. Manakamana temple overlooks Trishuli and Marshyang-di river valleys.

We were finally led through the queue in the cable car house and handed our tickets. We saw empty cable cars stopping in front of us. We were four and that was the maximum capacity of one electric cable car. Once we boarded the electric cable, the door shut automatically behind us and we were carried higher and higher, below us everything was tiny and got dissipated. One of my friends got scared when we picked up altitude but we managed to console his fears. After few minutes of elevation we finally stopped at the premise of Manakamana. We were told to keep the tickets and show it to the cable operator while returning back. Once we stepped out of the cable fresh mountain air hit our faces. The surrounding was so pristine. We hiked towards the temple. We saw many food vendors and stalls selling puja items. We assembled our belongings and climbed few steps leading us right to the temple. What caught my eyes were the orange groves. It was filled with oranges fresh in the season. Our mouth watered. We went to the temple. The holy Manakamana temple alighted with lamps, worshippers surrounding the premise and there was a queue for getting inside for worship by turn wise.

The recent earthquake with epicenter at Gorkha had weakened the temple’s structure. The base of the temple has subsided and slopes next to temple faced mudslides creating threat to the temple. Department of Archeology asserted temple is damaged beyond repair and must be relocated. We spend 10 minutes in the temple under heavy security. We made our offerings and returned home with Prasad from the pujari to our families. Before departure we bought kilos of oranges, boarded the returning cable car and this time we were descending lower and lower until we reached the main office at the base.

In these few hours our one day Manakamana trip was successful. Finally we got in the car and after a long drive we came to our home. When we reached home it was 5:45 P.M. I distributed the prasad to my parents, uncle and aunts, cousin and they were happy to receive it. In this way my Manakamana tour came to an end. Our government has donated over 1 kilogram (2.2 lb) of gold for renovation of temple. If you are visiting as a tourist you must have an itinerary for a packaged tour.

In this way I spent one day memorable trip to Manakamana hope you have an enjoyable experience and a story to tell.

Hangouts

RECALLING Hangout at Basantapur Durbar Square:I recall the month of September 2014, when I visited Basantapur, Kathmandu at leisure during the holiday season. I was there with my group of friends and the atmosphere was festive. Normally, Basantapur Durbar Square is the historical landmark of our country. It was also royal residence and coronation of the Kings of Nepalese monarch took place earlier. One is never bored in Basantapur, Hanuman Dhoka. It has a huge cultural and religious significance for Nepalese. The place was flourished under the rule of the Mallas, Ranas and Shah dynasty of Kings over three centuries. The architecture was of European style. The temples were built in Newari style. The living goddess of Nepal “Kumari” resides in Kumari Bahal. Chariots for Kumari in the courtyard can be vividly seen at Indra Jatra festival. It also marks beginning of Dashain which is the major festival of our country. We not only worship God and

goddesses but also offer animal sacrifice as a part of worship.

Inside Basantapur square, one can see palaces, temples, courtyards, quadrangles, ponds and images. There are many vendors who sell goods and services and it is also a hotspot for tourists. People gather in crowds to observe the festivals in the Basantapur Durbar Square. I was at ease on my visit. This was so captivating for me that I was reluctant to go back home. I insisted on exploring the place and hangout. I did shopping. We had a lunch of our own choice and one can never forget ice cream if you happen to visit the place. I am religious so it was essential that I prayed before the gods like Kaal Bhairav, Seto Bhairav, Kumari, Taleju temple which opened once in a year, Jagannath temple etc. I had the privilege of observing Indra Jatra festival and ex-President Dr. Ram Baran Yadav was honoring the event. There was so much crowd gathered in Basantapur filled with locals

and tourists and I was among them. The ceremony which lasted for some time with President’s speech made it eventful and a memorable one. Yes, it was indeed memorable until 25th April 2015.

The square which lies in front of old royal palace is a spread of 5 acres of land and always bustling with crowd of men, women, young, old, tourists and local people. The younger generation came for hangouts at dozen of cafes, wander and bask in the magnificence of surrounding architecture, shopping, bargaining with vendors at the Dabali. Kathmandu Durbar Square is a UNESCO heritage site of Nepal. Once can leave with souvenirs from the antiquity shops. You have access to banking services also and travel agencies. I took my ATM card and drew some money to purchase some of my interested objects with a fair deal. We gorged on scrumptious Nepali food called “momo” and hit cafes

for coffee and confectioners. The restaurants mushroom at Durbar Square and you can relish cuisine of your choice. So you not only visit the place and expand your knowledge but also sit and enjoy food in an empty stomach. Everything I recall about my hangout at Basantapur was joyous. Never in my mind did it came that just after that within a year a major earthquake will strike the nation and dismantle Basantapur legacy. The area was preserved for its historical reminiscence. I am bruised by the collapse of structures that were so artistic and monumental. Kantipur news reported Saturday's 7.9 magnitude quake and aftershocks throughout the day destroyed around 80 percent of the temples in Basantapur Durbar Square in Kathmandu. Reconstruction is taking place now a days but I don’t think it can replace the original artwork. You can give it a new life by your support and contributions.

Eat Healthy to Stay fit at Dashain

Dashain is a widely celebrated and biggest festival of Nepalese society. It marks

the celebration of good over the evil when Lord Ram destroyed Ravana and got his wife “Sita” back. We worship goddess “Durga” she is the potent form of power and all her nine forms are worshipped each day. Dashami is the day where we put tika from our elders and re-unite with our family members and feast together. The workers get leave for number of days and children get Dashain vacations for a month. It is all about traditions, puja and rituals. The diverse communities of Nepal have their own cuisines. Food divide cultures but cut the cultural barriers. Sweets and confectioners are important aspect of Newari cuisine and culture. Maris are their speciality. Sherpa’s are enriched with history of hardships, bravery and humility. Their food habits are product of their environment. Tharus are from terai belt way from Mechi to Mahakali. They make sticky rise called Chichad and serve with lentils, fish and vegetable curries. Their food are spicy. They eat mice while working in the field and during harvest. Fish and pork are also favorites of their cuisine. Alcoholic beverage prepared from fermentation of rice have perpetual presence in tharu homes. The

Marwaries celebrate Durga Puja with superior food. The innumerable sweets that fill any Marwari’s home starting from a week before the festival begins are unbelievable. From badam-ka halwa to dahis to ladoos their sweet food are substituting for meals. Without having to cook anything for a week. The Kshetris and Brahmins are the upper part of the society. The kshetry’s eat mutton, fish, chicken apart from staple food of rice and consume sweets and Paan. The Brahmins also consume mutton and their selected food items. Our traditions are celebrated heartily and food is the major indicator of it.

During Dashain tika before the auspicious time they stay busy with the arrangements and after tika they have heavy food prepared from their family members, well wishers. They drink and eat without seeking the consequences. Oily and spicy food increases cholesterol levels, unnecessary body fats and make cause high blood pressure symptoms. Alcohol consumptions give rise to liver and kidney malfunctions. If you are taking meat and alcohol together then the trouble is brewing in your health soon. If you are dieting and staying empty stomach for along time you may have gastritis problems. Nothing happens by eating like a

monster once in a year. The most commonly faced problem is indigestion. Too much calories are not only harmful but also not easy to shed off from your body naturally. Foods that contain less water and more fat are detrimental to our body. Our eating habits should be moderate no matter how delicious the food is. Some people buy from supermarkets and store food which are cooked earlier. Stale and unhygienic food can cause severe problem like food poisoning which can spoil the festiveness. Green vegetables and salads are missed in the diet .Dashain is not an excuse of consuming anything and everything you want. One must not bend from a healthy and proportionate diet. Overindulgence can have big and lasting consequences. You must drink lots of water, avoid dairy and processed food, exercise, stretch out and eat poultry products rich in protein not fat. If you are under medication and your doctor have banned you from eating certain type of food then stick to your doctor’s advice. It is not worth taking risk. Celebrating the joyous mood from mind-body and spirit is the highlight of Dashain. So have safe and happy Dashain and take care of yourself and your surroundings.

If someone goes through treatment of burn surgery then he/she can do general surgery. Reconstructive surgery is done by orthopedics and cosmetic surgeries are done by dermatologists also. These are some of the streams but purely it is part of plastic surgery. This is a high tech profession.

HOW RELEVANT IS PLASTIC SURGERY IN THE CONTEXT OF NEPAL?

If somebody is injured in an accident and gets burned severely, then he gets admitted to hospital on emergency. There is a high risk that people get never satisfied they want perfection for satisfaction. This is a medical field so risks are there. When surgery is done for one part other body parts must never get distorted.

WHAT IS THE ACCESSIBILITY FOR PEOPLE WITH MIDDLE AND LOWER LEVEL INCOME? IS IT AFFORDABLE?

Generally cosmetic surgery is expensive but for Dr. Basnet everything must not be compared with price. People with low economic status must get operated free of cost. Moral and social problems disable them to cover

the cost of operation and they must not be discouraged. Doctors should

do the needful at affordable price. Possible ways can be sorted out in such

extreme cases.IN NEPAL, PEOPLE HAVE INCLINATION IN

MEDICAL SECTOR, AS A SURGEON HOW FRUITFUL IS THE PLASTIC SURGEON’S

CAREER?

In Nepal, registered plastic surgeons are handful 10-15 in numbers. It is

less than the need of country. In case of cosmetic surgeon it is commercialized. You want the

returns of high investment made on the equipments. There is a high risk if you don’t do your job properly like when the scar becomes bigger instead of getting concealed with the treatment. So there are some pitfalls to avoid and make it a successful career.

HOW NATURAL IS THE RESULT AFTER THE TREATMENT WITH PLASTIC SURGERY?

Vertical scars can be modified and broken into horizontal lines which is seen from aging this process is known as GIB plastering. Such techniques are used to conceal the flaw and bring natural results among the patients by a skillful Plastic surgeon.

AS A DOCTOR HOW DO YOU SEE BEAUTY?

Everybody has the need to look beautiful. There are lots of constraints like finances, resources to keep up with the growing needs. Nobody wants to look blotched. Due to lack of reach in remote areas we need to make availability, while performing surgery the doctor always wants to give best results and it is very relevant in this profession also.
