One thing is for sure. April means we’re moving from soaking up the snow to soaking up the sun. While we’ve had snow in April before, I hope those joyous daffodils and heady crocus’ will soon stretch upwards to bask in the spring sunshine.

The arrival of Spring brings with it revival, renewal and a reminder to recycle. This year recycle your gently used items at the Georgian Bay Animal Rescue “Sale”. Renew your efforts to make the world healthier by supporting Earth Day (April 24th). We hope you also turned out your lights for Earth Hour on March 27th. Looking for ideas to promote healthy living? Drop into the Environment Network (page 10 and 12) to find out how.

While this great weather inspires us to release our bikes from winter captivity, restring our tennis rackets and take a few practice shots at the driving range, don’t forget to take time out to sway to the sounds of the Collingwood Jazz Society and the Georgian Sound Festival. Revive your spirit and energy by supporting the Seven Idols and give your skin a fresh spring feel. (Check out what’s new at Capelli’s on page 11!)

Change is a constant and at Collingwood Life it’s no different. This month we launch our website (www.collingwoodlife.ca). Share your pictures, let the community know what’s happening and stay in touch with Collingwood every month with our new online edition. Connect with us through Facebook. Next month we’re launching our “Four Month Report Card” including a survey where you tell us how we’re doing and we enter you into a draw for some amazing prizes.

Remember, Collingwood Life is “about you and your community”. Send us your pictures, your events and your stories. Share what you’re doing, who to profile and where to explore.

Keep an eye out for bikers, skateboarders and new plants for your garden!

Elephant Thoughts March Break Camp

Elephant Thoughts ran a cool science camp over March Break. Just two of the fun activities ... dipping hands in wax to make hand models and learning about structure, balance and teamwork while building a fort.

“Elephant Thoughts” Earth Day ChallengeWe all know that kids inhale new ideas and opportunities the way a sponge soaks up water. Part of their learning process is to put into practice what they’ve learned. Just as we celebrated Earth Hour in March and will take part in Earth Day on April 22nd, we encourage you to challenge your children to share what they know about recycling and being a friend to the environ-ment. Encourage them. Support them. Listen to them and help them put into practice what they need to do every day. The health of our planet depends on it!

Profile - Season Leone

Get to know Season and you’ll find yourself caught up in her infectious spirit, her passion for food and boundless energy. She is inspiring and delightful, someone who you feel immediately comfortable with.

Season is the visionary and culinary guru behind Culinary Designs, a Craigleith based specialty caterer. Her love of food comes from her Italian parents from whom she learned to appreciate the difference quality makes. Her inspiration comes from her love of family and life. She’s 6 year old Elliot’s mom, a runner, cyclist and snowboarder (she has endless amounts of energy). wwHer catering partner and lead team member is Andrew Collombin, who she just happens to be happily married to.

A self taught culinary master, Season’s accomplishments leave you in awe. From her serving days in many different Collingwood restaurants, she’s created a well respected and growing business. Known for providing the terrific boxed lunches at the Wayne Gretzky Tournament (no small feat providing 500+ lunches every day for 5 days and having golfers on the course call to personally thank her!), and her top of the mountain Alpine wraps, one of her passions is catering for intimate cocktail or dinner parties. Her cashew encrusted halibut and beef tenderloin on garlic crostini with homemade horseradish boursin spread will leave your taste buds in awe.

What sets her apart is her personal touch. Whether it’s a dozen Thai Rice Paper rolls for last minute guests; dinner for two delivered to your door; homemade cookies or a signature cheesecake for a special occasion, her door is always open.

Her passion for food doesn’t end there. Keen to help other restaurateurs, she shares her talents around. Drop into Ashanti in Thornbury and savour one of her cookies or wraps with your coffee. Try a slice of her cheesecake next time you’re at Cranberry Resort or in the Village at the Firehall. Enjoy “hot and spicy” hors d’oeuvres at Ashanti during Jazz Mania in Thornbury. Just look for the label design and you’ll know you’re enjoying something made by hand, with love and attention, by Season and her team. Instorage

Submitted by: Sasha Matanow “Over the Family Day weekend, Blue Mountain employees showed their Olympic spirit, in support of Canadian athletes competing in the Winter Olympic Games. Not only did the staff from Blue wear their red and white, some employees went as far as creating their own Olympic Blue Mountain uniforms! From hand crafted Olym-pic rings and clothing, to fake tattoos, from the famous Red Mittens, to our fantastic every-day staff spirit, Blue Mountain employees showcased their Canadian pride. Every day, staff at Blue continue to cheered on Canada during these Olympic Games.”

Going “red” at Blue

Life is full of times when we feel the call to change things; it may feel like you are starting over. Starting over in any area of your life can be overwhelming.

Starting over goes with the ebb and flow of life, it can be both exhilarating and debilitating and sometimes on the same day. From our early years we go through many phases and opportunities for starting over. As teenagers we grew up and eventually left home, made new friends, went away to school, then started over in a new job, sometimes in a new city. We may have met our life partner in our twenties and started over again.

The difference is as young people, we are usually excited about the pros-pects of beginning anew. When we are older and facing the end of a tur-bulent relationship, the phasing out of our job or retirement, we may find it much more challenging and we cannot help but resist the changes and the fallout it brings.

If you are facing a life altering change know that you have changed things before. You can navigate through this. I have rebuilt my life a few times. Does it get easier – no not really. One thing I do know is resistance makes the struggle last longer. Go with it and you open yourself up to new oppor-tunities and a whole new life much quicker.

The truth about starting over is you do have choice and you get to choose “what is next for you”. If you can’t see the choices or opportunities then there is something blocking your view.

As Helen Keller so aptly said “life is a daring adventure or it is nothing”.

Collingwood Colours - Fundraiser for CCI

March 26th kicked off the 1st “Collingwood Colours” fundraising event for CCI’s Art Department. The challenge: working within a 8”x10” area, celebrate the images of Collingwood. The result - over 40 entries. Thanks to William Vancise for spearheading the project and to Georgian Frame Gallery for hosting the reception and displaying the artwork.

In addition to their artwork, each artist was asked to submit a profile capturing their “vision”. Some of the highlights of their insights & aspirations follow. (Complete profiles are available from the CCI Art Department and Georgian Framing.)

Leila West, 16

As a student and having the creative ability to look at the world, I really enjoy the movement of line and colour as a way to depict the world around me. Being a creative thinker and having the opportunities to express myself with many mediums allows me to be free with my own ideas and views on certain issues and things that I enjoy.

Looking at the history of Collingwood and with the town being called “Hens and Chickens Harbour” really lets my generation understand what being a small town community truly is.

Vanessa Stubbs, 16

The beautiful town of Collingwood is where I was born … and have seen the town change and grow throughout the years. I decided to depict the old Admiral Collingwood Public School building. My mother and my uncles all went to the school when they were young. I spent five years at the school, my younger sister spent one. I loved the school and getting old enough to be on “the big kid side” of the field and to get to the second floor of classrooms was extremely exciting.

I know in art, you have to care, but it allows me to be more carefree in an artistic way and forget about structure and order. Though my personal pieces are influenced by my memories, my surroundings and places I want to visit, in the future, I wish to improve my technique in all areas, thoroughly grasp the concept of effective design and create pieces that will inspire me on a daily basis.

Patricia Moffatt-Hendry, 16

There are many different ways that people express themselves whether it be through poems, photography or painting. I find the best way to express yourself is through art (which) is an amazing way to express your opinion on topics, show your ability to create something original and to be as creative as possible. When I express myself through art … it gives me a chance to relax and clear my mind and be creative.

I believe that Collingwood has a great history and is a wonderful place for people to raise a family and they can enjoy many festivities such as Blue Mountain and the Harbour.

BOSS……

A young engineer was leaving the office at 3.45 p.m. when he found the acting CEO standing in front of a shredder with a piece of paper in his hand.

“Listen,” said the Acting CEO, “this is a very sensitive and important document, and my secretary is not here. Can you make this darn thing work?”

“Certainly,” said the young engineer. He turned the machine on, inserted the paper, and pressed the start button.

“Excellent, excellent!” said the Acting CEO as his paper disappeared inside the machine, “Now, I just need one copy.”

Lesson: Never, ever assume that your boss knows what he’s doing, just because he’s the Boss.

A cat died and went to Heaven. She was met at the gates and was told “You have been a good cat all these years. Anything you want is yours for the asking.” The cat thought for a minute and then said, “All my life I lived on a farm and slept on hard wooden floors. I would like a real fluffy pillow to sleep on.” Instantly the cat had a huge fluffy pillow. A few days later, six mice were killed in an accident and they all went to Heaven together. When met at the gates with the same offer, the mice said, “Well, we have had to run all of our lives: from cats, dogs, and even people with brooms! If we could just have some little roller skates, we would not have to run again.” “Consider it done.’” And the mice got beautiful little roller skates. About a week later, a messenger was sent to check on the cat.. He found her sound asleep on her fluffy pillow. When awakened he asked, “Is everything okay? How have you been doing? Are you happy?” The cat replied, “Oh, it is WONDERFUL. I have never been so happy in my life. The pillow is so fluffy, and those little Meals on Wheels you have been sending over are delicious!”

Think about this. Mr. Insurance Client recently purchased a new home for $300,000. His insurance broker completed a home replacement cost estimator and advised Mr. Client that the adequate Replacement

Cost of his home should be $450,000. Mr. Client does not understand why the values are coming in so differently.

Replacement Cost is the actual cost to replace or repair a building to its pre-loss condition. This value may be significantly different from the “market value”.

Some of the reasons for this difference are as follows:

Top-Down versus Bottom-Up – What a lot of people don’t consider is that new construction begins at the foundation and builds upwards. Often times, after damage to a home that is not completely destroyed, the roof needs to be taken off and rebuilding must then occur from the bottom down. This process is much more time-consuming and labour intensive.

Debris Removal/Demolition – Rebuilding a home after a loss can sometimes begin with removing the remainder of the building and all of the destroyed debris. This cost is built in to the replacement cost. For example, if the replacement cost of a home was $240,000 and it cost $40,000 for debris removal and demolition, only $200,000 would remain for the home itself.

Special Features and Materials – The Collingwood area is well-known for its beautiful century homes. These homes often have special features such as lath & plaster walls, solid wood doors and railings, custom ironwork, and stained glass windows. These items are expensive to replace and their values need to be added to the replacement cost of the home.

The above examples are only a few reasons why insurance to value is so important to a policy holder. The evaluation tools that insurance brokers use to determine a replacement cost take all of these examples, and more, into consideration. If you have recently completed your basement, renovated your kitchen or bathroom, or added a garage to your home, please call your broker. It is important that we stay updated with the changes in your home so that you are protected in case of an accidental loss!

To be continued next month…

Collingwood Curling Makes the Connection

Thanks to Harry & Betty Cogill for putting together the 1st annual Grandpar-ent/Grandkids Bonspiel on March 20th. Six teams signed up, each with at least one grandparent from the Georgian Triangle; 2 youth participants and 1 other adult. Between the skill testing challenges and 2 six end games, it was a terrific way to spend a Saturday.

1st Annual “Inside Ride” for Kids with Cancer

On March 4th at Pretty River Academy, the pedals were pumping; the music was thumping; the costumes were crazy! “Thank you” to the 34 teams who partici-pated in “Inside Ride”, raising $25,600 for kids battling cancer.

Inside Ride is an indoor cycling challenge and fundraising event dedicated to rais-ing monies in support of families and children with cancer. Brought to the attention of Principal Roberta Murray by PRA parent Simon Williams, who has been chosen to participate in Sears National Kids Cancer Ride in September 2010, along with fellow Blue Mountain resident Melody McCague. Approximately 40 riders have committed to ride across Canada. Mr. Williams’ and Ms. McCague’s portion of the ride is approx. 2,500 km.

preservation-grade board.

Mat board labelled Acid Free is not the same as conservation, preservation or museum quality mat board

Tip No. 3: All framing glazing is not created equal.

Picture framing glazing is avail-able in a variety of types. Some specialty glazing offers unparalleled clarity, making the glazing appear almost invisible. Ultraviolet glaz-ing blocks 98 percent of a certain section of the damaging indoor and out-door UV light rays and helps slow down fading.

Tip No. 4: Frame it to last.

The cost difference between conser-vation framing and acid free framing is minimal... Frame it to last. If your object is framed correctly you will only have to frame it once, and your trea-sure will be protected for generations to come.

Most people have at least one treasured item or image waiting to be framed and

displayed – family memories tucked away in a closet or drawer with no one to admire them.

Often, the reason is people aren’t familiar with the process of preservation framing, which allows consumers to enhance as well as help protect valuable keepsakes from harmful ultraviolet (UV) light exposure, dirt and dust.

Here are four tips for working with a professional framer to achieve a preser-vation-quality framing job to showcase and safeguard your treasures:

Tip No. 1: Choose a professional custom framer who shares your creative vision.

Professional framers are craftspeople who can help you select the best ma-terials. This should be a collaborative, creative process, and you’ll discuss the different options available for the follow-ing three essential framing materials:

Tip No. 2: All mat board is not created equal. Mat board can vary widely. When doing preservation framing, only use

The Wine Guy - Cabernet Sauvignon“King Cab” is still the best-selling, most famous red wine in the world. It’s the wine that put California on the map, the grape that forms the backbone of the world-famous left-bank wines of Bordeaux and their American ‘Meritage’ imitators. It shows fabulously well as a varietal wine in Chile’s Maipo Valley, provides the base for Australia’s splendid Bordeaux-inspired blends and is a key component in most of Italy’s Super Tuscans. There are excellent Cab blends from Washington State and many very interesting varietal examples from Argentina. Winemakers the

world over use Cabernet Sauvignon as their ‘signature’ wine. So why do so many people new to wine absolutely hate it?

It’s the tannins, mainly. Cabernet Sauvignon is a small grape with thick skin. This gives it a much larger skin-to-pulp ratio than most other red wine grapes. Since the tannins (and colour) in red wines come from the skins, stems and seeds of the grapes, Cabernet Sauvignon wines have a very high level of tannin when compared to other reds: mouth-drying, cheek-sucking, screw-up-your-face-like-you’ve-smelled-something-bad tannin. Many new wine drinkers take one sip of Cabernet and run for the hills. That’s a shame because they’re missing out on some great wine.

A winemaker will often try to soften Cabernet’s tannins by oak-aging the wine or blending it with softer grapes like Merlot. Wine drinkers also have a couple tricks at their disposal, such as cellaring or decanting, that can help. For me though, the best thing to do with a tannic Cab is to go grill a steak. Medium-rare, preferably. (Rare actually works as well or better, but I just can’t bring myself to eat it. Medium or medium-well cooks the meat too much to be as effective). The protein-rich meat of the steak completely softens the wine, revealing the wealth of flavours that have been hiding there behind the tannins all along.

Cabernet Sauvignon wines can be some of the most complex in the world, showing ripe blackcur-rant, plum, cassis and (from cooler-climate examples) herbaceous mint and chocolate. Cabernets that have been oak-aged to soften the tannins (which is most of them) also feature flavours of vanilla, cigar box and cedar. Decanting the wine for about an hour will have a similar effect to serving it with a steak but doing both works best and, really, isn’t any excuse to grill a steak a good one?

Are you ready to make it happen and go for the Gold in your game of life?

If not now when?

By Melanie Vollick, Freelance Writer.

Not every restaurant is made from metal and has a roof and walls in the shape of a semi circle. Called a Quonset hut, this restaurant is also in the middle of nowhere. Ted’s Range Road Diner is worth a visit.

Twenty three years ago, Ted Lye had a dream of opening his own restaurant. With determination and a limited budget, he managed to scrap together a down payment for the old hut and set out on an expedition to build what is now an amazing restaurant and a destination in itself.

Drop into Ted’s and spend time with locals, weekenders, farmers, jammers and even snowmobilers driving in off the trails. The Wednesday night jam session is a great time to let loose and enjoy live music at the same time. You won’t be disappointed and you may leave with a few good stories for your friends and family about the atmosphere and desolate location.

Ironically, the location of the hut became as much of a drawing card as the menu. According to Ted, “people are coming here because they feel they’ve made a journey to somewhere totally different.” Main courses start at about $20, but portions are huge. Challenge your taste buds by ordering off the blackboard daily specials and try bison, venison, musk ox, quail, fresh Georgian Bay whitefish and even alligator, kangaroo and emu at times. Not so adventurous? Ted’s Range Road Diner also offers regular Canadian food items such as homemade burgers and fresh cut fries.

To find your way to one of the coolest little restaurants in the area, take Highway 26 three kilometers west of Meaford and turn right onto County Road 112. After roughly a five-minute drive uphill, you can’t miss the large Quonset hut on the left. It will be an experience like no other that will enlighten your soul and make you feel at home. I highly recommend a visit to this remote country haven. To book a reservation or to learn more about Ted’s - call 519.538.1788.

Loved by many, Pete Crompton, has been described as “a rare individual who celebrated life to its fullest. A phenomenal athlete, humble friend and terrific role model”. Pete passed away on July 13th, 2003, the result of a tragic boating mishap in Muskoka. Family and friends set up www.petecrompton.ca and the “Pete Would Go” ski day, held at Osler, was launched. Organizer and Pete’s best friend, Mike Robbins, said the foundation has raised $600,000 over the last 7 years. This year the funds were donated to the General & Marine Hospital and the Dave Irwin Brain Damage Foundation.

Head coach at Craigleith Ski Club, Dave Campbell, who knew him from his days at the Ontario Ski Academy; described him as “a leader … a solid, genuine guy, both on and off the slopes”.

Pete’s dad Ken was instrumental in having the Highway Traffic Act changed to deal with impaired boat drivers. Regrettably Ken passed away just before the Ski Day. A celebration of Ken’s life will be held at Osler Bluff on April 9th.
