THE JOYFUL NOISE, “WE ARE ONE”
CAPITAL DISTRICT – The Joyful Noise was a con-temporary Christian music ministry well known in the Capital District region and beyond, during the years of 1969-1993. The Joyful Noise was a large group of young people, led spiritu-ally and musically by Mr. Bill Womer. The Joyful Noise was the core of what would later evolve into “Christian Mu-sic Ministries”. The positive side of social media, as well as the unfortunate passing of key members, has stirred interest in a reunion of The Joyful Noise, with the rec-ognition, that still, “We are One”. A reunion is planned for October 10, 2015 focused on reuniting and catching up. The reunion will culmi-nate with a barbeque dinner and an evening Praise and Worship service at Bethle-hem Lutheran Church. Many of the songs spanning three decades when young lives were forever impacted by this experience will be sung together again. We will also be including all the parents and family members in the Saturday night service who supported each of us during our “JN” years. During these early planning stages we are interested in help locating former members, and iden-tifying folks to assist on vari-ous committees that have been formed. Please visit the Facebook page for Chris-tian Music Ministries if you are a former member and want to connect, or contact us at [email protected]

After November 6, the Town will continue to pick up yard waste, but not on the regular weekly schedule. Collection continues through December 11, weather permitting. Call 783-LEAF for information.

In last week’s column, I’d just discovered how easily my purple amaranthus self-sowed. After enjoying and experimenting with them for a couple of years, I noticed another variety offered in a seed catalog called ‘Elephant Head’. The fun I was having with my purple variety made me want to give ‘Elephant Head’ a try. Elephant Head’s flowers supposedly resemble an uplifted, trumpeting head of an elephant. It was hard for me to get the same impression from the picture in the catalog but, poetic license aside, it looked like an interesting plant. Seeds were ordered and started inside over winter and planted out in spring. Just like its purple cousin, Elephant Head took off quickly. By the end of July, I had a lovely group of 3’ plants. As advertised, they produced large, dense clusters of tiny purple flowers. I hesitate to use the term “flowers”; the flower clusters were more of a dense, fuzzy, elongated clump. I must admit that I was having a hard time seeing much of a resemblance to and elephant’s head. To my mind, they looked more like an obscene gesture often exchanged by motorists during fits of road rage. Regardless of its attitude problem, I enjoyed the presence of Elephant Head Amaranthus in the flowerbed. I assumed that Elephant Head would self-sow as readily as its cousin did so I didn’t bother to collect any seeds that fall. The following spring, I was disappointed to find only three or four coming up. Though few in number, they did quite well. That fall, I pulled them up by the roots and hung them upside down indoors. I wrapped newspaper around them to catch the seeds. Amaranthus seeds are about the size of poppy seeds and each flower head produced thousands of them. I grew a bunch of them the following year and now they, along with my original purple ones from Mont Pleasant come up unbidden all throughout the flowerbed. Now I simply pull out the ones I don’t want and leave the ones I do. That is some easy gardening! Over the years, I’ve learned a lot more about this interesting family of plants. Like corn, squash, potatoes, marigolds and poinsettias and many other of our favorites, amaranthus comes to us from the ancient Inca and Aztec gardens of Central America. These cultures grew amaranthus as a grain rather than for its ornamental qualities. Ancient gardeners harvested the seeds which were served as a side dish much like we would rice or potatoes. Unlike rice or potatoes however, amaranthus seeds contain as much as 18% protein and are rich in iron, calcium, lysine and phosphorus. There is also evidence that they toasted the seeds until they popped and ate them as a snack. Sort of miniature popcorn. The grain varieties of amaranthus range in height from 4’ to 8’ and are adaptive to a wide range of soil and climatic conditions. Interestingly, this adaptability is causing a resurgence in popularity among farmers dealing with soils of marginal quality. It may be that the easy-to-grow amaranthus will play an increasingly important role as we attempt to feed the exploding population in the decades to come. Like many of the plants brought to Europe from the New World during from the 1500s on, amaranthus enjoyed a good bit of popularity there. Plant breeders worked their magic and developed some ornamental varieties you may have heard of. You may remember your grandmother growing ‘Love-Lies-Bleeding’. This amaranthus, despite its gloomy name, is a striking plant of 3’ to 5’ with long, flowing tassels that drape elegantly to the ground. There’s another group of amaranthus that features colorful leaves (called bracts) that simulate flowers much like a poinsettia does. ‘Joseph’s Coat’ is one you might recognize. ‘Joseph’s Coat’ grows to about 2’ and the top-most leaves are accented with creamy white and scarlet. Others of this type feature burgundy leaves topped with red bracts. This spring’s Burpee seed catalog offered a yellow topped variety aptly named ‘Poinsettia Mix’. While you will likely find ‘Joseph’s Coat’ and ‘Love-Lies-Bleeding’ on the seed racks at the garden center in spring, the rest will probably need to be mail ordered. I’ve now seen my original purple variety in the Thompson & Morgan seed catalog under the name ‘Intense Purple’. Another seed catalog, Seeds of Change, offers some of the original grain varieties of amaranthus as well as the amusing ‘Elephant’s Head’ variety that I enjoy in my flowerbed. If you order and grow amaranthus, you probably won’t have to ever order them again if you take a few minutes in the fall to gather several thousand seeds for yourself and your friends. Thanks for the read.

REDUCE PESTICIDE POLLUTION AT HOME Commercial farms are often blamed for the vast array of con-taminants that find their way into water supplies and the soil itself. But home-gardening enthusiasts may also be contami-nating water and soil through the use of pesticides.
Data from Green-NetWorld, an environmental advocacy group, indicates Americans use approximately 2.2 billion pounds of pesticides every year. Pesticide use is a prolific problem. More than 100 active pesticide ingredients are sus-pected of causing cancer, gene mutations and birth defects. In addition, a growing list of pesticides may disrupt the im-mune and endocrine systems and have long-term impacts on infants and young children. Research indicates that many pests targeted by pesticides will eventually develop resis-tance to these pesticides, rendering the chemicals useless.
One way to reduce chemical pollution at home is to find al-ternatives to pesticides.
• Investigate reduced-risk pesticides.TheUnited States En-vironmental Protection Agency is examining pesticides that pose less risk to humans and the environment than existing pesticides. Homeowners concerned about pesticides can vis-it www.epa.gov to learn more about reduced-risk pesticides.
• Use biopesticides. Biological products, also known asbiopesticides, can play a role in a more sustainable food chain. These control agents include fungi, bacteria or viruses and can be applied like chemical pesticides but do not leave toxic residues. Furthermore, they are relatively inexpensive to produce.
•Looktothekitchen.Dishsoapcanbeaneffectivepestkiller.Fill a spray bottle with soapy water and spray around the ex-terior of your house and on plants that have a pest problem. The soapy water can kill ants and roaches. It also can coat the wings of small flying insects. Catnip is another natural pesti-cide. Planting catnip in a garden can repel mosquitoes.
•Useepsomsalt.Sprinklingthissaltontheleavesofplantsinthe garden can keep away animals, such as deer or ground-hogs, that would otherwise devour plants. Epsom salt also can repel beetles, slugs and snails.
Before homeowners turn to chemical pesticide applications, they can explore many natural remedies to keep unwanted pests at bay.

EXPAND DOWNSTAIRS TO MAXIMIZE SPACE AND ENERGY EFFICIENCY
(MS) — With home prices on the rise, finishing a basement is the latest trend in real estate. More and more homeowners are enjoying the perks of additional living space, a reduction in heating and cooling costs, a healthier home, and, if done right, a more desirable home when selling.
A finished basement can be used for virtually any-thing and may offer multi-purpose spaces the entire family can enjoy. Common uses include additional storage or a media room, craft room, guest suite, workshop, or gym. A lit-tle extra room can give a growing family space to breathe and provide con-venience for everyday life.
An unfinished basement can be a source of energy loss. By finishing your basement, you can expect
to see savings on your heating and cooling costs. Industry ex-perts recommend finishing the space with the proper fram-ing, insulation and vapor barrier to guarantee a cozy and in-viting space. Insulation plays a key role in the comfort of your
newly remodeled space and although its hidden within your walls, insulation will make sure your space stays cool in the summer and warm in the winter. Retailers suggest using a stone wool insulation, such as ROXUL. This recommendation is also fire and water repellent and is resistant to mold, mil-dew, rot and bacterial growth — making your space healthy and safe.
An added benefit to expanding downstairs with a finished basement is the instant marketability. Many buyers now de-mand a well-finished basement to give them extra space. Al-though you may not immediately recoup the financial costs prior to selling, you will stand out among the rest.

POWER TOOL SAFETY TIPSPower tools can dramatically reduce the time it takes to complete home improvement proj-ects. Professional contractors regularly rely on power tools for cutting and sanding, and many do-it-yourself renovators follow suit and invest in power tools to help get the job done. But power tools, in spite of their usefulness, are not without risk. According to the Work Safe Cen-ter, power tool injuries account for as many as 400,000 emergency room visits in the United States each year. Power nailers, chain saws and table saws account for the greatest number of injuries. Keeping safe is of the utmost priority when using power tools. Here’s how:
• Read all manufacturers’ instructions and guidelines before use.
• Keep your tools clean and in proper operating condition.
• Use the right tool for the job.
• Always wear eye protection, such as safety glasses or goggles.
• Wear standard cotton or leather work gloves to protect hands.
• Consider the use of earplugs or earmuffs with loud power tools.
• Don’t use power tools in proximity to flammable vapors, dust or construction materials.
• Always check that wires are kept away from blades.
• Maintain a tight grip on a tool.
• Do not overreach when using tools, and maintain balance.
• Pay attention when working with any power tool.
• Only use attachments specifically recommended for the power tools and ensure proper in-stallation.
• Unplug all power tools during breaks and anytime when tools are not in use.
• Routinely inspect tools for damage.
• Keep tools stored in secure locations when not in use.
DID YOU KNOW?While it might be tempting to lower mower blades when summer temperatures reach their hottest, it is possible to cut grass too short. Homeowners who want to cut back on the time they spend mowing their lawns under the hot summer sun should avoid lowering their mower blades too low, as doing so can cause significant damage to the lawn. Lawns that have been cut too low are less capable of surviving drought and are unlikely to thrive. When grass is cut too short, the stem tissue from the grass is exposed, and that exposure can lead to unsightly grass that turns yellow or brown. Grass that is cut too short also may suffer from weaker roots, which in turn makes the grass weaker and less likely to grow in strong. In addition, weaker grass is more susceptible to weed growth, which can be both a nuisance and an eyesore. When mowing, homeowners should remove no more than one-third of the grass blade. Mowing at this height will promote strong roots and protect the grass when the weather gets especially hot in the summer.
DID YOU KNOW?Feng shui is the practice of arranging a home or office environment so energy flows gently and smoothly throughout the building. Many homeowners adhere to elements of feng shui, the origins of which date back several thousand years, in an attempt to create a positive environ-ment that is free of stress. The basis for feng shui is that everything in a given environment has an energy known as “chi.” Proponents of feng shui believe chi not only flows through the body but also through the environment. When a home environment negatively affects this flow, believers in feng shui feel this can lead to health problems, financial troubles or domestic strife. This is why feng shui adherents do not allow clutter to accumulate in their homes, as they feel clutter can stagnate energy flow. In addition, feng shui adherents avoid homes with long, dark hallways or poorly lit staircases, as they feel such areas negatively affect the flow of energy in a home.

Kugler’s Red Barn Furniture and Gift Store
is located in a historic barn in Albany
County. The barn originally housed dairy
cows and horses in the 1930’s when the
proprietor’s parents purchased the property
in the late 1930’s. Mr. Kugler (Al’s father)
operated a successful antiques business
in the barn for many years.
In 1977, Al and Karen Kugler opened Kugler’s Red Barn selling
unique country, traditional, Shaker and primitive furniture and gifts. It
has since continued to grow and change with the years. The annex
was added in 1988 that increased the store’s size. One thing that
hasn’t changed is the store’s policy to bring unique, quality furniture
and gifts to its customers.
To this day the store is family run. Scott Henderson, Karen’s son,
manages the business. Al and Karen stay actively involved in the
day to day business as well. The family and employees are committed
to a high level of customer service and personal attention.
At Kugler’s Red Barn, you can find an assortment of styles including:
Country, Shaker, Primitive, Traditional, Mission & Transitional. All of
our furniture is still made in the USA by small family owned factories
like ourselves. Some is Amish built solid wood furniture. Other
manufacturers that we carry include B&S Woodcraft, Penns Creek,
Zimmerman Chair, Nisley Cabinet, Daniel’s Amish, Door County
Furniture, Hallagan (made in New York since 1899) and Elmcrest.
We take pride in the quality of handmade furniture & will not sell
imported furniture. We also carry a large selection of gifts and
accessories, framed art & paints. We carry a full selection of bedroom,
dining room, kitchen, living room & family room, occasional &
entertainment centers.
Don’t forget to browse through our selection of braided and wool rugs.
To fill your needs in woods like Ash, Oak, Cherry, Birch & Pine in
a variety of stains & painted colors, we offer hand made custom
furniture as well as furniture repair and refinishing.
