Colonization Timelines

• Directions: Create an illustrated (visuals) timeline of about the political, economic, and social impacts of the colonization of India.

• Your timeline must include the following events: – The British East India Company gained control of all

Indian trade– The British Government establishes rule over India

(establishes the Raj)– Indian National Congress founded– Muslim League wants a separate Pakistani state– Gandhi’s Salt Marches– Pakistan and India declare Independence– First battle over Kashmir– Gandhi assassinated– India becomes a democracy

Reasons for Colonization

• European traders came to India looking for spices, cloth, and other goods not available in Europe.

• Establishing the British East India Company, Britain gains control of India’s trade with Europe in 1757.

• The British were looking for new markets to establish trade with. (Mercantilism)

Commonwealth

• Commonwealth membership-refers to the British Commonwealth of Nations, which is an organization of countries that were formerly colonies of the British. Among the important roles played by this organization is the promotion of free trade.

• Membership Criteria include:– Must be democratic. – recognize the monarch of the Commonwealth as the

Head of the Commonwealth. – accept the English language as the means of

Commonwealth communication.

Government

• India is the world’s Largest Democracy (EST. 1950)

• Reflects both the American and the British systems

• British aspects in Indian government:– It is a parliamentary democracy – The leader of the majority party becomes the

prime minister the head of the government

Education System

• The colonization of India by the British provided a high level of education but only to India’s elite.

• Indians as a majority still work on a farms, but as the economy changes educational needs are changing.

• Today spending per student is extremely low.• United States’ spending per student $6230

annually• India’s spending per student $6 annually, however

India’s average school well outperforms those in the United States.

Sati

• Sati- a Hindu practice whereby a widow throws herself on the funeral pyre of her husband: now abolished by modern law.

• Sati was officially abolished by the British government on December 4 1829, however it is still practiced in rural areas throughout India today

Economic

• About 2/3 of India’s people still rely on farming for their income

• Traditionally, cotton textiles have been the major source of income for India. – However since the removal of British control

and the monopoly over the various industries , other industries such as iron and steel have become major sources of income for India.

•Railway System •British added a very extensive railway system throughout India.

•By 1920 a total of 38,040 miles of railroad spread out through India connecting the three main British ports used for trading Bombay, Madras and Calcutta
