PICNIC IN HESKY PARK!

Graced with beautiful weather and won-derful company, a group of Inn Mem-bers ventured out to Hesky Park for a lovely afternoon picnic! Everyone en-joyed sandwiches by the lake while the boats zipped by. Many thanks to Diane for organizing the event and Frank from Golden View for supplying the wheels!

JOKE OF THE WEEK...

ANNIVERSARIES FOR...

Two elderly women were out driving in a large car; both could barely see over the dashboard. As they came upon an intersection the stoplight turned from yellow to red, but they continued on through. The woman in the passenger seat thought to herself “I must be losing it! I could have sworn we just went through a red light.” In a few miles the two came to yet another inter-section. Once again, the light turned red and they coasted on by. Now truly concerned, the woman in the passenger seat turned to her friend and exclaimed: “Mildred! Did you know we just ran through two red lights in a row! You could have killed us!” Mildred turned to her and said, “Oh! Am I driving?”

WORD OF THE WEEK...

Esoteric [es-uh-ter-ik] adjective

Understood by or meant for only the select few who have special knowledge or interest; recondite.

Belonging to the select few. Private; secret; confidential.

EXAMPLES

Metaphysics is such an esoteric subject that most people are content to leave it to the philoso-phers.

The elderly gentleman must have had some esoteric motive for leaving his art collection to a mu-seum halfway around the globe.

The spontaneous outpouring of every heart in the community is the highest panegyric that can be offered to the departed.

DID YOU KNOW?

The word esoteric is derived from

the late Latin esotericus, from the Greek esōterikos meaning “belonging to an in-

ner circle” and eso “within.”

This is a photo of the plant stand base lo-cated in the lobby that is home to our hearty Philodendron. This was a tough one! But 3 of you found it --- Congratulations to Joan V., Flo and Sue P. No need to put a last initial for Flo because we all know who she is!

When Woody’s owner died, the family sold the house and left him outside on the doorstep to fend for himself. For more than a year, Woody the Poodle waited under a nearby shed in hopes that his owner would return. He was rescued by Hope for Paws, an animal rescue or-ganization that helped nurse him back to health (and gave him a much needed haircut!) Woody is currently being fos-tered by a friend of the organization but does still need a forever home. As his story spreads, though, things are looking up for this little pup.

The Greater Meredith Project has invited sculptors from all over New England to par-ticipate in their year-round, outdoor, juried exhibition that brings public art to Meredith for residents and visitors to enjoy. The pro-ject currently features twenty-four sculp-tures positioned throughout Meredith in highly visible areas along Main Street, the grounds of the Mill Falls Marketplace and in scenic parks. A brochure with a Walking Map is available at the entrance to Hesky Park, as well as Town Hall and the Meredith Public Library; the map details where each sculp-ture is located along the path and who cre-ated it.

TRAVEL PHOTO OF THE WEEK

Mushroom Rock, Barbados - Weath-ered formations like Mushroom Rock dot the white-sand beaches of Bath-sheba on the rugged east coast of Barbados. Normally thought of as a highbrow vacation spot, Barbados is slowly gaining notoriety as a surfer’s paradise, with some of the best waves in the Caribbean. The beach that houses the Mushroom Rock has actually become known as “The Soup Bowl” due to the annual inter-national surfing tournaments hosted there.

THE SUGGESTION BOX…

This week I received a newspaper clipping about a new exhibit called ‘Extreme Mount Washington’ which not surprisingly is found at the summit of New Hampshire’s highest peak--- Mount Washington. Of course you do have other options beside hiking to get to the summit ---- one can take the Cog Railway from the Crowford Notch side of the Mountain, you can drive your own car up the Auto Road -- or perhaps a better choice might be to ascend in one of their specially designed Vans. Just a guess -- but I bet this clipping was left in hopes of testing the waters to see how many Members might be interested in taking a ride! If you haven’t been to the summit -- you should and seeing this new exhibit is an added incentive. If you are interested why not be sure to let either Sonya or Chelsea know. It sounds like it could be a great Field Trip! An aside: Many many years (and pounds) ago I ran the annual Mt. Washington Road Race up the 8 mile auto road --- and I must have heard the same joke 100 times. “This is the easiest race I have run in a long time --- there’s only one hill.” A second suggestion asked that we look at the telephone number that has been given out as it does not seem to go where it is in-tended. This certainly bears looking into.

CLOSING NOTES THIS AND THAT………..

“BURLS TO BOWLS”

Our own Harold Noreen is having an exhibit Friday August 1st through Sunday August 3rd from 1p to 7p each day. For more infor-mation please be sure to call the Noreen’s at x1579. It all sounds very interesting --- as I find out more I will be sure to share it with you! ----------------

I understand that we are not long from the start of the installation of the new pole that will next year hold the Osprey nest. Unfor-tunately the owners of the Cell Phone Tower are evicting our feathered tenants. The lo-cation of the new pole (out back) was cho-sen based on what is likely to be best for the Ospreys. I couple of years ago I saw this done up at the old Laconia State School and the relocation worked very well. Iain and his team from the Science Center know what they are doing!

It is great to see how nicely the grounds are kept and how all the trees, shrubs and bushes are maturing. It gives the place a very nice feeling!

Never being very shy about offering advice I want to be sure to encourage us all to get outside each and every day if it is at all pos-sible. It doesn’t have to be for long --- but that connecting with nature --- even if briefly --- can make an important difference in how we feel!

Until next week -----------
