2013 ANNUAL REPORT TO DONORS

Nearly 3,300 donors made gifts and commitments

totaling a record-breaking $35.4 million last year, fueling

the success of Transforming Lives: The Campaign for Colorado School of Mines and making a visible impact

all over campus.

You helped make last year the best fundraising year yet

and set the bar high for the years to come. As Mines

celebrates its 140th anniversary this year, there is much

to be proud of, and it is because of you that we head into

the next 140 years as strong as ever.

All gifts are important to us, from a small, first-time gift

from a student or new alum to the tradition of lifelong

giving exemplified by Tom ’36 and Mary Snedeker, who

recently made their 13th life income gift with a donation of

$100,000. A gift of $5 buys one pound of copper wiring

and $75 registers a student for a conference. In addition

to donors of all size, private nongovernmental research

support amounted to $22 million last year alone.

YOUR SUPPORT IS TRANSFORMING LIVES!

2013 ANNUAL REPORT TO DONORS

We couldn’t do it without YOU!

THANK YOU!Because of you, we were able to launch Transforming Lives: The Campaign for Colorado School of Mines last fall, and to capitalize on the significant momentum that has been building here for several years. As the new president of the Colorado School of Mines Foundation, I want to convey my gratitude to you for the immensely positive impact you are making here every day.

This annual report for the fiscal year that ended June 30, 2013, provides a glimpse of our financial picture and outlines the basics of our organization, but it also highlights some of the many ways that your giving helps to transform this university. I am honored to serve Mines and to serve you, one of our valuable and dedicated donors.

Sincerely,

Brian Winkelbauer, President and COO

THE MINES FUND“One thing that was always the case was if you went to Mines, it made a big difference to employers. They knew you went to a good school and knew what you were talking about. That’s still the case. I’ve always worked with engineers—people in the mining or the oil and gas business—so I could speak their language.”—Frank Erisman ’65, loyal annual donor to The Mines Fund, member of the Heritage Society, and volunteer in myriad capacities over the years.

“I give to The Mines Fund because I hope to help fill in the gaps, to benefit the institution wherever the funds are needed most each year. My contributions ultimately enhance the lives of our proud and hardworking students and strengthen this wonderful university. Our students want to go out and improve the world, and for every dollar I give, I know the world is getting something big in return.”—Kathleen Feighny, Administrator, College of Applied Science and Engineering

FACULTY & RESEARCHBecause of your support, the number of named faculty professorships and chairs at Mines now tops 30. Last year, a donor-established chair position was filled, energizing the interdisciplinary, university-wide Underground Construction & Tunneling Program with capable leadership.

“Some of the most sophisticated engineering in extremely challenging environments is being carried out underground around the world. The more UC&T courses our students take, seminars they attend, and projects they participate in, the more they gravitate toward this challenging field.”—Professor and Grewcock University Endowed Chair in Underground Construction & Tunneling Mike Mooney

SCHOLARSHIPSStudent support is Mines’ number one priority, and last year alone, private donors like you established 45 new scholarship and fellowship funds. The endowment totaled $231 million as of June 30, 2013, and of the 514 funds that compose the endowment, 372 are allocated to student assistance.

“I wouldn’t have had the opportunity to travel abroad without scholarship support, and that experience has allowed me to see what an impact I can make as an engineer in an international setting.”—Carmella Caltagirone, Sophomore, Environmental Engineering, Harvey Scholar

COLLEGE & DEPARTMENTAL SUPPORT Mines’ three-college structure strategically aligns degree offerings across disciplines and catalyzes synergies among departments. The College of Engineering and Computational Sciences, College of Applied Science and Engineering, and College of Earth Resource Sciences and Engineering serve more than 5,600 students. Departmental and college support allows Mines to provide a broad and rigorous curriculum that features hands-on experiences and collaborative approaches to problem-solving.

“Through Chevron’s University Partnership Program, we support Mines by providing funds for teaching and research labs, scholarships and support of student participation in various professional organizations. Mines plays a strategic role in our University Partnership Program and is a key supplier of top engineering and earth science students that help Chevron meet energy demands around the world.”—Chevron University Affairs Portfolio Manager Bill Hunter

STUDENT ENRICHMENTWhile Mines is known for its demanding academic curriculum, the university also offers a rich student life experience. There are more than 170 student organizations that cater to every interest. Cherished traditions like the M Climb and E-Days bring students together.

“The Mines experience is truly unique. Every student can choose how much he or she gets from the school. Obviously, the studies are difficult and demanding, but I have learned to manage my time responsibly enough to balance friends, athletics and school.”—Evan Ford, Junior, Geological Engineering

A CHANGING CAMPUS LANDSCAPEThe Mines campus features beautifully renovated historical architecture alongside modern construction. The campus has grown tremendously over the past five years, adding or upgrading:

• 188,000 square feet of academic and research space

• 18 acres of athletics facilities (soccer, football, softball and baseball)

• 10,000 square feet supporting student health and wellness

• 291 student beds

In the coming years, with your support, the campus will continue to expand. Elm Residence Hall (207 beds) will open in fall 2014, and a 600-seat dining hall in Elm is slated to open in spring 2015. Construction will begin soon on the Clear Creek Athletics Complex, a comprehensive complex that will benefit the majority of Mines’ student-athletes, coaching and training staff, game-day spectators and the Golden community. The new Starzer Welcome Center (named for Michael R. ’83 and Patricia K. ’83 Starzer) will be built to house the Office of Admissions, the CSM Alumni Association and the CSM Foundation. Also planned is a 95,000 square-foot Cornerstone Academic and Research Facility that will bring together interdisciplinary academics and research.

TRANSFORM LIVES: BUILD THE FUTUREThrough planned giving, donors like you strengthen Mines for the future by establishing a bequest provision, naming Mines as a final beneficiary of an IRA, donating an insurance policy or creating an endowed fund. Over the last year, planned giving donors made $577,775 in irrevocable deferred gifts and generated $1.1 million in bequest distributions. Additionally, the CSM Foundation uncovered 27 revocable bequest intentions with an estimated value of $11.2 million. This represents a 40 percent dollar increase over fiscal year 2012.

“My dad, Herbert Z. Stuart ’36, was extremely pleased that he could attend Mines and was enthusiastic about Mines. If he were here, he would say he’d had the best education possible. We’re very pleased to provide opportunities for Mines students. There were no scholarships when my dad was there.”—Raynelle Kuckel

“Raynelle’s parents had a sincere appreciation of the impact Mines had on their lives, and the scholarship fund is a testimonial of our love for them.”—Ben Kuckel

Raynelle and Ben Kuckel established the Herbert and Katherine Stuart Memorial Endowed Scholarship Fund in memory of Raynelle’s parents.
