COLORED TAZETTAS (called ‘Jonquils’ by florists)

First Stanza (N. elegans x Soleil D'Or) 8W-O

This is one of the most remarkable of all tazettas. It is one

of the very first daffodils to flower in the autumn,

flowering within weeks of a cool wet change - and can be

forced to flower even earlier by putting it in the shade and

watering it. It is fully fertile for those interested in

daffodil breeding. It has scent that may be pleasant even

to those who dislike tazettas (jonquils to florists). It is

outstandingly floriferous and an outstanding increaser

with almost every offset producing a stem of flowers. It

may prove to be one of the very few daffodils that

succeed on the coast. If it has any faults it is that its

perianth isn't perfectly white, and it may be a little too

small to be a good florist flower.

$20/bulb; 3 for $50

Gold Stanza (07_04T = N. elegans x Soleil D'Or) 8Y-O

A sibling to First Stanza this was the only yellow seedling

from the cross. It flowers about the same time as First

Stanza but, although hardy, it is not as vigorous nor as

good a parent. It can give 8O-O seedlings, however, and

seems likely to produce something worthwhile.

$50/bulb

07_02T (N. tazetta subsp. lacticolor x N. elegans) miniature 8W-O

This is a good Autumn Surprise sibling flowering about

the same time

$20/bulb

10_04T (First Stanza x 05_01T) 8W-O

05_01T is an Autumn Surprise sibling (N. tazetta subsp.

lacticolor x N. elegans). This is not miniature but it is a

nice intermediate between First Stanza and the (lacticolor

x elegans) miniatures with a cup that is closer to elegans.

Autumn flowering.

$50/bulb

09_18T (First Stanza x ?) 8W-O

This First Stanza seedling is a good doer but is later than

First Stanza, less brightly colored with a yellow cast

through the petals. Its strength is that it has the largest

florets of my autumn tazettas and may be a useful parent

of both 8Y-O and 8W-O large autumn tazettas.

09_30T (N. tazetta x N. tazetta subsp. lacticolor) .

This superb autumn flower is a cross

between the miniature N.t. lacticolor and a

nice dwarf tazetta Will Ashburner sent me. It

is not miniature but it’s not far off.

$30/bulb

PAPERWHITE TAZETTAS

Paperwhites typically do not feature highly in specialist catalogues. They could be

good exhibition flowers except that they are too early for shows and in Canberra the

flowers and plants are damaged by winter frost.

07_01W (paperwhite x N. broussonetii) (from

Bill Welch seed)

This is a very big paperwhite that, like its pollen parent,

reliably flowers in the autumn. For those who don’t like

the smell of paperwhites this one will be a very pleasant

surprise. Obviously the parents are not genetically close as

the plant is sterile here and the foliage is green rather than

glaucous in the way that pure paperwhites are.

GRAMON SERIES

Except for Gramonesque this series are from Taztep x Autumn Colors.

Gramonesque and Autumn Colors are from seed from the Californian Bill Welch.

They are big, robust, and carry large clumps of florets high above the foliage. As a group

they are scarcely believable and this is in Canberra where the climate doesn't suit them.

They will do very much better in less frosty conditions.

All are mid winter flowering but they can be forced with cool wet conditions or delayed by

being kept dry. An exhibitor could do very well with them.

Taztep 8W-Y

Taztep is vigorous but modest and not particularly distinct

except that it has proven itself a MUST HAVE seed and pollen

parent for anyone interested in breeding tazettas. It appears to

be a perfectly fertile tetraploid, two parts colored tazetta, two

parts paperwhite.

JONQUILS

VIRIDIFLORUS HYBRIDS

Viriquilla (03_01MJ = Limequilla x Emerald Sea) 7W-Y

Bred with pollen generously sent by John Hunter

from New Zealand this flower has superb form

and vigour. It has only a slight green cast from

viridiflorus but it should be valuable for breeding

green flowers. It is fertile and winter flowering but

appreciates protection from frost.

$25/bulb

Viriverse (07_03MJ = Hillstar x Emerald Sea) 7YYW-Y

Also from John Hunter pollen this flower has

good form and vigour. Like the other Viri's,

this variety is winter flowering, fertile, and

needs some frost protection. I grow them

against the north wall of the house. The scent

of these hybrids is heavenly.

$25/bulb

Viristar (07_04MJ = Hillstar x Emerald Sea) 7W-W

Also from John Hunter pollen, this flower

has good form and vigour but it is perhaps a

little less tidy than the other Viri's. It is winter

flowering, has some fertility, and needs some

frost protection.

$25/bulb

Shatter Green (03_01J = N. fernandesii SS105 x N.viridiflorus) 7G-G

A novel winter flowering miniature. It is probably 7Y-

Y but it is notable for the strong green cast it inherits

from its green pollen parent. Appears to have very little

fertility but might be worth trying in a warmer climate.

FERNANDESII HYBRIDS

03_05MJ (N. fernandesii MS449 x Barnstorm)

I have petty much given up on this hybrid as a

breeding flower. It reliably sets a small amount of seed

but nothing has come of it. A nice early jonquil.

$10/bulb

03_07MJ (N. fernandesii MS449 x Mrs David Calvert)

I have given up on breeding with this hybrid

too even though it too reliably sets a small

amount of seed. Petals fade as the flower

ages.

$10/bulb

05_03MJ (N. fernandesii MS449 x Redlands Too)

The intersectional fernandesii hybrids have not

yielded much here. This one has not yet

definitely proven itself but it looks most likely

to produce robust hybrids. Vigorous and early.

10_45MJ (Limequilla x 02_02J) 7W-W

Jonquilla is a multi headed species. A good division 7

bred from it should have many florets. Two is not

enough! This variety easily produces 6 florets, and

although it takes a little time to completely whiten, in my

opinion, it sets a new standard for exhibition jonquils.

Hardy and a good increaser, I expect this to be a marvel

in the hands of experienced exhibitors.

JONQUILLA HYBRIDS

These were bred many years ago and have now been culled down to a few varieties that

flower well and are pretty much indestructible.

Yazquil White (98_03MJX Polar Imp x jonquilla) 7W-W

There are few white daffodils that are as tough

as this. Scented; 2-3 florets; mid season.

$10/bulb; 3 for $25; 5 for $35

Yazquil Orange (98_11MJX Creag Dubh x jonquilla) 7Y-O

This is the best of the yellow oranges: - 2-3

florets, tough, fairly sunproof, scented of

course, and makes a great display.

$10/bulb; 3 for $25; 5 for $35

Yazquil Yellow (? X jonquilla) 7Y-Y

The best of the yellows only has 1-2

florets. Tough and floriferous it is a

good choice where an intermediate

sized flower is wanted.

$8/bulb; 3 for $20; 5 for $30

Yazquil Angel (01_382 Moomba x jonquilla) 7W-W

This is a reliable vigorous very late flowering white. Put

the stems in a vase and think about the season that was. It

is the only hybrid of this type that has ever set seed for

me.

$10/bulb; 3 for $25; 5 for $35

Late Jane (Compute x jonquilla) 7WWY-Y

This jonquil is an end of season favourite yet apparently

I have no photos of it.

The photo (98_10MJX Cybele x jonquilla) gives some

idea. It is one of Jane’s favorite daffodils. Jane is

affectionately called Mrs Timing in the family hence the

name.

$10/bulb

YAZQUIL Collection $30

1 each of Yazquil White, Yellow, Orange and Angel $30

APODANTHI

These are the most perfect exhibition miniature daffodils. I find them difficult in pots but

they thrive undisturbed in the paddock.

cross. It should be useful in the development of

hardy multi headed whites.

N. calcicola 13Y-Y

This is a nice specimen of N.calcicola. This species seems

to be the most hardy here, a characteristic it can pass onto

its offspring.

TRIANDRUS

Just a couple of triandrus species are on offer this year. Triandrus have a reputation of not

increasing by division. These are the best increasers of the bulbs I have. They have been

species.

TRIANDRUS HYBRIDS

00_07RM 5W-P (Quasar x triandrus)

These hybrids have a bad reputation. This one has thrived on

years of neglect. I suspect they are happy to be baked but don’t

like too much summer moisture. Planting them somewhere that

is dry and undisturbed in the summer may help, possibly more

shallow than usual.

BULBOCODIUMS

Gold Step (02_01MB = Alfriston x bulbocodium) 10Y-Y

This is a vigorous inter-sectional

bulbocodium hybrid that has proven itself

to be a parent of vigorous seedlings. To

my knowledge, this is the first fertile

hybrid of its type. It’s classification as

division 10 is correct I think, but it is NOT

a miniature.

$25/bulb; 3 for $50

Quen Dor 10Y-Y

Tall, hardy and big, but still miniature, this is one of

the most impressive bulbocodiums here. Early spring.

$12 / bulb

Untshen 10W-W

This is a tall hardy white that flowers at the

same time as Quen Dor. They make good

companions.

Imersh 10Y-Y

This is a short stemmed variety with great

substance and, for a bulbocodium, very broad

petals. Early spring flowering, just a bit later

than Quen Dor here.

$12 / bulb

Nug Nutsch 10Y-W

This is the best of the reverse bicolors and is also

a good parent of reverses.

$12 / bulb

Wubwub 10Y-Y

The plan was to register this bulbocodium at

the same time as the others. A box full is an

amazing sight. Flowers mid-late season here.

WILD DAFFODILS

Some of the following offerings are the species that contributed to breeding of modern

daffodils. Others are more obscure, some endangered. Most come from Spain and Portugal.

Most are very hardy and readily set seed. Although I doubt they will become weedy some

attention should be given to this issue. I have used the names as they appear on the

American Daffodil Society’s website ‘Daffseek’.

N. alpestris

Rarely if ever offered this daffodil is hardy enough when

left undisturbed, and it produces hardy hybrids, but it is a

slow increaser.

$30 / bulb

N. bicolor

This was one of the leading contributors to modern

daffodils.

$10 / bulb

N. cyclamineus

A most elegant species, it likes a cool position and acid

soil.

N. hispanicus subsp. bujei

This thrives at Yass and produces big

clumps with masses of flowers.

Endangered.

N. lobularis

This is another great wild daffodil that

forms clumps that produce masses of

flowers.

$10 / bulb

N. nevadensis

This one of the few daffodils of this type that is multi

headed. Botanists may split it off into a group of its

own. – certainly it is not keen to form hybrids with its

supposed close relatives. Deliciously scented.

Endangered.

seems equally happy in New South Wales.

N. perez-chiscanoi

A nice vigorous clumping species.

N. radinganorum

Endangered in the wild this daffodil is nevertheless hardy. It

flowers prolifically in thick long standing clumps.

NEARLY WILD DAFFODILS

99_03D (Gayi x cyclamineus)

This is a floriferous hardy cyclamineus hybrid. It can be

expected to tolerate more summer moisture than most but

also appears to be drought hardy. It is not miniature but I

have put effort into breeding miniatures from it.

$10 / bulb; 3 for $20

02_12D (like Small Talk)

This is a floriferous hardy miniature

trumpet.

POETS

N. poeticus

This was grown from seed sent by Steve Vinisky

(Oregon). In Yass it flowers after all the other daffodils

are gone.

STANDARD DAFFODILS

This year I finally managed to evaluate some of the selections made at the start of the

century. They were moved at the end of their first flowering season and have remained

undisturbed ever since. They have been chosen because they are hardy in natural conditions

and continue to flower well even in a large clump. All are early or early-mid season.

Yazerkel (01_53 Turakina x {Gossamer x Audubon – Parton}) 2W-YYP

This plant doesn’t quite hold its flowers up but it is

irresistibly pretty and inspirational in a vase.

$10 / bulb

Yazwhite (01_86 Melissa Anne x Ulverstone Star) 2W-W

I would not have picked this pedigree for a tough

white but here it is.

Yazkreem (01_113 Elva x Ashmore) 2W-W

This flower is far from exhibition perfect but it does

spectacularly well in natural conditions.

$5 / bulb

Yazorange (01_79 Ithica x Montego) 2Y-O

The pedigree has a question mark over it but it is very

believable.

$10 / bulb

Yazpink (01_214 Ebony Kalimna) 1W-P

It would be nice if these flowers were a bit higher

above the foliage but a tough pink trumpet (with a

great pedigree) is not to be ignored.

Yaz2001 Collection $40

Yaziverse (03_141 may be Tristram x Impeccable) 2YYW_W

This reverse has passed the hardiness test both in the field

and in boxes (that kill 50% of varieties). This might make it

one of the best of its kind. Flowers have strong contrast and

are very long lasting. Mid season.

$15 / bulb

Yazamaze (05_114 Supreme Empire x Uncensored) 11aW-P

David Jackson generously gave me Uncensored at a show

when it was still under number. Mid season.

$40 / bulb

Yazkomand (05_123 King Hit x Menehay) 11aY-O

This daffodil that was particularly noticed when

the Canberra Hort. Society visited – a tall

commanding clump of high quality flowers.

Unfortunately I only have a photo of its first

flower. Mid season.

catches that plague flowers of this breeding

Yazrim (06_28 Reference Point x {Ruddynosey x Impeccable}) nearly 1Y-YYO

This is a refined early near-trumpet with a delicate

Yazender (07_76 Bender 90/221 x {Moomba x Redlands Too}) 11aW-WWY

This is a reliable exhibition split corona. Won Best 11 in

Pops Legacy).

overlapping both front and back. Very Early.

Cockatoo Dreaming 2P-R (01_261 Fragrant Rose x Decoy)

This plant’s first flower was vandalised by cockatoos

hence the name. It was selected anyway because the

wilting of the flower intensified the pink in the

perianth (which recommends removing the perianth

and letting it dry out a little as a way of proving pink

in the perianth). It is a good doer but it does not have

great habit or flower. Mid-season

$20/bulb

Penbury 3Y-Y (02_268 = New Penny x Badbury Rings)

This is a good vigorous plant that reliably produces

exhibition quality flowers. Mid season.

$25 / bulb

Iterate ~4Y-Y (02_277 Nynja x Fortescue?)

Unsurprisingly from such a strange cross this

double has uneven color but it can win exhibitions

regardless. It has now proven itself as an excellent

parent having fathered a very

nice 4W-WWP this year.

Unfortunately it is the

irregular flowers that tend to

have pollen and there aren’t

many irregular flowers. The

stem is good but not good

enough to raise the flower

after a heavy frost. Midseason
