Colorful & Creative Word Studies That WowI love the Word of God! And I find the study of words and their meanings fascinating. Because of that God often speaks to me through words and their definitions.

My child, pay attention to what I say. Listen carefully to my words.– Proverbs 4:20 (NLT)

Writing and illustrating the words and their meanings helps me to “pay closer attention” to what God is saying to me, and search out the “hidden treasures”.

Cry out for insight, and ask for understanding. Search for them as you would for silver; seek them like hidden treasures. - Proverbs 2:3-4 (NLT)

Creating illustrated word studies is also a great way to keep a record of my learning so I can see with more clarity what God has been doing in my life and saying to me. Plus, it helps me to align my thoughts and beliefs with God’s.

Furthermore, the subconcious mind (what the Bible refers to as the heart), thinks in pictures. So adding colors, symbols, doodles and illustrations to the words helps to “hide” it in my heart.

I have hidden your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you. - Psalm 119:11 (NLT)

I wanted to share with you my process of doing this. But before I do, please keep the following in mind:

• There is no right or wrong way to do this. What I am sharing is simply the process that works for me - in hopes that it will inspire you to try different things to find what works for you.

• The intent is not to create a work of art suitable for selling or sharing on Pinterest. It is about “practicing” hearing God, and developing a closer relationship with him. It’s about creating WITH God and partnering with him in what he is doing.

• After you have done a few of these word studies, you will be able to look at all of them and see a rhythm or pattern emerging, giving you even more insight and understanding.

Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life...Learn the unforced rhythms of grace...- Matthew 11:28-30 (MSG)

Process:A. Fill out the attached worksheet (see pg. 7) as you do the following:

1. Choose a Bible verse.2. Choose a word from that verse.(Or you can first choose a word that God has been highlighting to you and then find one or more Scriptures that contain that word.)3. Look up the Hebrew or Greek definitions & meanings using... - bluletterbible.org - biblehub.com - biblestudytools.com - Strong’s Concordance - Bible dictionaries4. Look up the definition using online dictionaries.5. Look up synonyms and antonyms using online dictionaries.6. Read the verse in several different Bible translations. (Use the Bible app, bible.com, biblegateway.com, or biblehub.com)7. Read other Scriptures that use that same word. (Search for that word using the apps and/or websites mentioned above.)8. Do a search on google.com and/or read commentaries (desiringgod.org has lots of great info on a wide variety of topics.)

9. Using all the info you have gathered, write your own paraphrase of the meaning of the word.

B. Using the info you gathered on your worksheet, and any insights you gleaned, use color and creativity to “illustrate” the word and its meanings.

*Before beginning, see tips on next page.

Tips for Creating your Colorful & Creative Word Study:

• Optional: first sketch out a rough draft - mainly for layout purposes.• You can do this in an art journal, a sketchbook, a journaling Bible, or on

a piece of cardstock or art paper.• Use a pencil or Frixion erasable pens to sketch in the main pieces.• Choose a color palette and style that will help portray the meaning of

the word.• Write your chosen word in BIG BOLD BLOCK letters at the top or in the

middle of your page.• Use a variety of different lettering styles.• What really stood out to you while researching? Make that the biggest

thing on your page (other than the chosen word.)• It is easier to draw a shape around a group of words, than it is to draw

the shape first then try to fit all the words within the shape.• Add doodles and embellishments last, after you have written all your

words.

Choose One Or More Of The Following Ways To Add Color:• First create a colorful background using watercolors or colored

pencils, then add your writing on top.• Use colored or patterned scrapbook paper for the background, then

add your writing on top.• Use colored pens, pencils or markers to write with - adding lots of

color as you go.• Write in black, then add color last.• Use colorful journal cards, or cut out squares, rectangles or circles out

of colored or patterned paper. Glue them onto your page, then write inside them.

• After you’ve done all your writing, embellish your page with stickers.

Remember that Jesus IS The Word of God. So talk to him while you study!
