Hello CSPWC members and associates. The coming year looks promising with another Open Water Exhibition at the Aird Gallery in Toronto and a CSPWC Watercolour and Water Media

Symposium at Geneva Park.

This past fall saw an Open Water Exhibition at the Leighton Centre in Calgary which our VP Rayne Tunley attended in my place. By all accounts it was a great exhibit and the staff, at the Leighton Centre, were great hosts.

The Canada Watercolour Day, our first one separate from world watercolour day in November, was held on October 26th and proved to be a success. There will be some pictures sent in by various members, including myself, in this newsletter. If anything it was certainly a good start to an annual event. At our last Executive meeting the Board agreed on holding the event in late September in 2014. I feel it is extremely important for our members to be very active in the practice of painting in watercolour to show the world what we’re capable of. Congrats to Heidi Lambert and all the participating artists in the recent fall Western Streams Exhibi on at Leigh Square in Port Coquitlam.

Some of our members have been very successful on a personal and professional

level recently and the following few come to mind, forgive me if I miss anyone. Kudos to them all. Tony Ba en was selected as a semi-finalist for the Arabella Canadian Landscape Compe on. Karin Isenburg has an article in a recent edition of Watercolour Ar st Magazine. Linda Kemp and Jean Pederson both have new book releases. Ona Kingdon has an article in Watercolor Ar st Magazine. Finally, Chris Gorey had a watercolour selected to the PLANS Exhibi on at Dalhousie Art Gallery in January 2104, curated by Tom Smart. Kudos to all of them and any other member who has achieved success this year, you make us all proud!

The CSPWC Geneva Park Symposium to be held June 23-27, 2014 is going to be a very exciting event. We have the top of the line instructors who are covering a wide range of topics including Plein-air, still life, figures, abstract and experimental in watercolour and various water media. Check out our poster in this newsletter. I’m reaching out to all

members and associates to pass along the

information on the symposium and to encourage you and your fellow watercolour/water media artists to sign up

for Geneva Park. It’s an experience that is not to be missed!

Well it’s getting close to Christmas so, before I conclude, I want to pass along my sincere best wishes for a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you and yours from myself, Anita and the entire Executive.

Cheers, Bill Rogers, President

Regional News

BC REGIONAL REPORT By Heidi Lambert

T he British Columbia Exhibition, Western Streams, was in

every way a success. It was a bright and sunny day for our Exhibition Opening on Oct 26th, which coincidentally was also Canada Watercolour Day. We had the acting Mayor of Port Coquitlam, Michael Wright, attend to give a speech on Art Appreciation and to assist in the Awards Presentation. More than 40 members of the public, as well as CSPWC Members and Associates, attended our Opening Ceremony. Sadly only Gerry Thompson and Sam Boehner were able to attend the Ceremony to accept their Awards; the rest were unable to attend due to distance.

David McEown’s feature film presentation An Ar st’s Journey was a fabulous finale to a wonderful afternoon. We had a great many compliments on our exhibition and the high level of talent that was displayed by our members. As a part of our exhibition we offered three 2 day workshops to be instructed by CSPWC Elected Members: David McEown, Gerry Thompson and Leslie Redhead. Both David and Gerry have received very high regards from all that attended. Sam Boehner has written an article on those workshops elsewhere in the Newsletter.

The CSPWC/SCPA Endowment Fund operates under the umbrella of The Toronto Community Foundation. It is probably the most important factor contributing to a stable financial future for the CSPWC/SCPA. The fund has been in operation since 2011 but it takes considerable time for people to join in the effort and to understand the importance of an endowment fund. Firstly, any money you donate will never be spent. Only the interest is spent. This is a very important point since a multitude of contributions will remain in operation in perpetuity. Additionally, the fiduciary responsibilities in terms of security and audit are maintained for the most-part by the Toronto Community Foundation, which eliminates ongoing responsibilities for our volunteer board on a yearly basis. Personally I donate $5 a month. It sounds like a small amount until one adds up the years that I have been doing this. If every member did this we would have a considerable sum of cash which would be enlarging in effectiveness on an ongoing basis. I know it would not be easy for some members to do this, but if it was done by those who can afford to do it, it would be appreciated by all those who would like to see our era leave a legacy for the future. EDITOR’S PICK

This August I took a painting trip to Group of Seven Country. I wanted to see the same vistas that had inspired great paintings. Here are some of my observations and some advice if you are planning a similar trip.

The first thing I did was to contact Lin Souliere, CSPWC Central Ontario regional rep. She lives in Lion’s Head, Bruce Peninsula and is the living Wikipedia for group of Seven regions. She gave me wonderful info on painting areas – even took me painting the shore and rocks around Bruce Peninsula. The rock formations are astounding. There are boulders the size of a car deposited randomly by retreating ice from a period in prehistory both strange and forbidding. Huge trees have taken root over some of these giant rocks and embraced them with their roots in a startling, timeless and unexpected union. In some places it is perpetual dusk. The trees overhead form a

canopy pierced only by occasional shafts of light at mid-day.

By the shore there are huge slabs of rock towering over or submerged under the water. Unfortunately the beauty of the Bruce is no longer a secret. All of the

private waterfront property has been occupied by $1,000,000+ vacation homes. And the National Park is full of tourists. If you want to paint undisturbed by onlookers I advise you to avoid going when school season is over.

Also, know that to stay in the National Park you must pay in full in advance with no refund if a family tragedy curtails your trip. However there are private campgrounds in the area and you can get a day pass at the Visitor Center to visit the park. If you’re going to take reference photos for studio painting during school holidays, visit the Bruce. It’s remarkable. But if you want to paint en Plein air and your holiday

PADDLE AND PAINT IN THE PATH OF THE GROUP OF SEVEN

is limited to summer vacation period I advise you to skip Bruce Peninsula and go to Tom Thomson country – Algonquin Park. Algonquin Park is a huge wilderness area. It is bounded on both sides of a 56 km long stretch along highway 60. Although there are many visitors the park is large enough to always find a campsite somewhere. There are 6 campsites in various locations along the 60, some with electricity. The park is very well managed in terms of wildlife protection/preservation.

Moose are abundant and fairly well habituated to humans. If you see one and are quiet and make no sudden moves they may browse in your presence. Algonquin is not as spectacular as Bruce Peninsula, but it is extremely paintable and a chance

to be close to nature on a more personal level. I advise you to bring bikes – there are old railroad trails transformed to bike paths. If you have one, bring a canoe or kayak. It will allow you to reach islands or areas unreachable by roads. Or you can also rent a canoe or kayak for about $40 - $60 day depending on size. There is an art gallery at the

visitor center in Algonquin Park with some truly spectacular pieces. There are a variety of styles ranging from super realism to impressionism. Many of the paintings are huge. Tim Packer and Bev Rodin have some very impressive impressionistic paintings there. (I admit to a bias in that direction.) Almost all the paintings are studio pieces - which was Tom Thompson's approach too. He painted in oils on 8” x 10” wood panels in the summer en Plein air. In the winter using his summer pieces as reference, he painted his large studio pieces that we all know so well.

Most artists in the exhibit have produced in oils or acrylics. There are almost no watercolours. I think this may be in part because so many scenes are complex especially in summer. For en Plein air with this subject I would suggest acrylic is a good

EDITOR’S PICK

choice - one is able to reclaim whites over darks - no masking required - fast drying. But I’m sure wc is doable too – with thoughtful planning and maybe a touch of gouache.

I intend to return next year – but with my own kayak. Maybe I’ll see you there?

X BIENAL INTERNACIONAL DE LA ACUARELA 2012, MEXICO CITY

- Gill Cameron

The X Bienal Internacional de la Acuarela show was held at the Afredo Guati Rojo National Watercolour Museum in Coyoacan, Mexico City. The opening was held on Sunday December 2, 2012 and the show continued until January 6, 2013. The show

represented 10 countries from around the world: Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Spain, Estonia, Italy, Japan and Mexico. Canada was represented by Joanne Lucas Warren, Rayne Tunley, Garry Hamilton, Karin Isenburg, Don Baxer and Gill Cameron. The museum was founded by artist Alfredo Guati

Rojo and is dedicated to the preservation and continuance of watercolour painting in Mexico and around the world. It is set in the most exquisite surroundings, which includes the main house, an exhibit hall, a café and an auditorium. The buildings are set amongst beautiful gardens, fountains and sculptures. A

truly amazing gallery to visit if you are in Mexico City!

The opening commenced at 12pm and lasted for most of the afternoon. It began with a wonderful concert in the auditorium and then proceeded to the ribbon cutting ceremony for the art show, with over 100 people in attendance. All the paintings were full sheets, 30x40, and the colours and design were as diverse as all the countries represented. So much talent all in one room!

It was a very interesting and dynamic show, a really wonderful experience! So get ready for the next show in 2014!

Heidi Lambert Regional Director of Western Canada for the CSPWC put together a team of great instructors as part of the 2nd Western Streams Regional Juried Exhibi on. The three masters in order of the dates included David McEown, Gerry Thompson, and Leslie Redhead. What a line up. Three weekends: November 2-3, 9-10 and 16-17 filled with information, painting and fun! For those that missed these workshops you missed a great opportunity to hone your skills, paint with some masterful artists, and support the CSPWC in the process. Several members rose to the occasion. Koodos to each of you.

I had the distinct pleasure of having had instruction from all three of these instructors. I signed up for all three workshops, but in the end I was only able to attend the first two. I've had previous instruction with Leslie Redhead, in fact, she is my mentor, so I was very disappointed not to be able to attend her 2 day event.

The first was David McEown, an internationally notable, award winning Canadian Artist. His credentials are as long as your arm. He is a wonder of wonders, David and his wife, internationally renowned photographer Daisy Gilardini, travel to the far reaches of our magnificent planet to photograph and paint icebergs and wilderness. During our two days with him, David explained his process, demonstrated his technique, while all the while entertaining us with his tales of adventures. His paper is kept wet most of the time, he stretches his paper spontaneously as needed with bull clips. David paints with one round brush, and a household paintbrush. Simply an amazing

process to watch and from which to learn. David McEown is an excellent Artist and instructor. If you get another opportunity to paint with him, take it...you will not be disappointed. David will be teaching several workshops over the next year and they are all listed on his site www.artistjourneys.com. He and Daisy will be leaving for Antarctica soon, so if you want an adventure and paint in watercolour with a master you can get more information at www.oneoceanexpeditions.com.

The second 2-day workshop was with Gerry Thompson, another remarkable and internationally known Canadian Artist. Gerry has been involved in the arts from a young age. Her award winning paintings are inspired by strong contrast between light and shadow and combinations of natural and artificial light. Her nurturing style of teaching is inspiring to her students. It gives us the feeling that there is hope for the rest of us.

A Bevy of Artists' Workshops

Gerry provided demonstrations of her technique which is mainly painting with three primary transparent colours, laying them in wet in wet. She had a large class and spent most of her time with individual students, guiding and instructing them with their chosen reference material. Gerry doesn't teach often, she spends a lot of her time painting and showing her work, and winning awards. She recently had a painting chosen for Interna onal Ar sts Magazine. You

can visit her website for more information at www.gerrythompson.ca

The third workshop was with Leslie Redhead. Leslie also has a distinctive reputation as an internationally renowned award winning Artist. She emigrated from Boston; Massachusetts in 2006, with her husband Dirk and two children, Hannah and Blake. Leslie Redhead's credentials are vast; this year alone Leslie has been awarded 3 signatures, among them her MEd in Fine Art Education. I speak from first-hand knowledge that her abilities as an instructor are premiere. Her process of pouring is just one of the many techniques at which Leslie is proficient. In this technique she masks out the lightest value between layers of wet into wet pouring three primary staining colours.

Audrey Bakewell, one of the participants who attended all three workshops, was kind enough to provide an image and a quote from herself and another attendee. Nancy Grigsby says: "One of the nicest Saturdays I've had in a long time. Can't wait to go back tomorrow! I've been painting for a long time and it's kind'a fun to learn something new to get the creative juices revved up!"

Audrey Bakewell says: "I love this workshop. Leslie is very organized, the class is laid back. She keeps reminding us not to panic during our pouring. We are so well prepared going into that task that that is not going to happen. This is a great method that I can hardly wait to try out. Tomorrow cannot come soon enough!" Leslie is a prolific and diverse award winning artist. She currently teaches in Canada, the US and Spain. Visit her website for more information www.leslieredhead.com.

Watercolour News: email or snail mail?

Sending out Watercolour News by e-mail is part of our efforts to upgrade the services we deliver, while working more efficiently and economically. However, we have become aware that some newsletter recipients aren't’ getting their issues. Unfortunately we have no way of knowing who you are.

Please keep the office informed of the email account to which you want us to send your newsletters. Also, let us know if you need the newsletter to be sent to you by mail. Keep up to date on your Society and gain all the advantages of your Membership.

Let Anita know if you are having problems, or even send us your news to add to the upcoming issue , at [email protected]

CSPWC News

This initiative in social media may well provide the society with another tool for attracting members and sharing our love of watercolour painting.

If you have a Facebook account already please search for the page and “friend” it which increases the range of any announcements that might be posted. If you haven’t ventured into Facebook perhaps this could be your starting point, you will need to create your own Facebook page and then search for the CSPWC page.

Lin Souliere has set up a Facebook page for the CSPWC/SCPA.
