JUNIOR EYESParents, being seen helps to keep your child safe. Back to school now, so this is the time to consider that many children wear dark uniforms and coats as they make their way to and from school. Whether they're walking, cycling or just crossing the road after being dropped off by car, it can be hard to see a darkly clad child especially on misty, rainy mornings and again when daylight is fading. Some coats, bags or shoes may feature silver-grey reflective trims which help visibility after dark but are not enough for daytime and twilight visibility. The best reflective materials are shiny plastic in bright fluorescent colours such as pink, green, yellow & orange. They will show up in the day, dusk, night and poor weather conditions. BE AWARE – BE SAFE!Want to know more about JUNIOR EYES? Contact Helen via email at [email protected] or telephone 01476 861399

Disturbing news on the A&E front this month with the Secretary of State for Health accepting the IRP report recommendation that a review into overnight closure is not necessary (what a surprise). In brief, we now have a situation where the Lincs Health scrutiny committee is distrustful of information provided by ULHT, the Trust having made a ‘substantial variation in healthcare provision’ without proper consultation or planning and to quote the website of our local MP, “...they seem to be lurching from one crisis to another”. On the staffing front, I wonder if they will also fail to recruit a new Chair during the next 12 months?

KURLINGOn Monday 31st.July we held our annual barbeque. Whilst the weather was not what you would call hot, it did remain dry and for that we were thankful as no one fancied soggy sausages. The BBQ was manned by Fran and Bill who can cook sausages just about blind folded now they have done it so many times (120 to get through this year). I don't think they dropped any as usually happens but then who knows what occurs when they are left unattended (Fran and Bill not the sausages). Dave very kindly provided his special, sausage rolls with not a soggy bottom in sight but they didn't stay around for long. Thank goodness I nicked one before anyone else got at them. Thank you to all those who donated delicious puddings, scrumptious cream and jam scones and Marta for her wonderful potato salad. Jane was in charge of wrapping cutlery in a serviette (don't worry Jane with a bit of practice you will be perfect next year). To all those who helped with clearing and washing up, well you know what you will be doing next year.!In early October we are going on a river cruise on the Trent. We have been before and it is a popular trip. The first one was where Julia learnt her trade as a pole dancer but sadly as she now has a new garden to re-design and the singing group plus the lack of available poles, this has fallen by the wayside. Finally, on 2nd September, Dave and Anne Marie tie the knot. We all hope you have a lovely day and wish you many years of happiness together.

LUNCHEON CLUBOn September 13th we are returning to Woody's. This will be our third visit and we are really hoping for fine weather so we can walk round the lake. Will let you know if this happens next time .If you would like to come along to one of our lunches just ring June on 861400 and she will give you all the details.I have to end on a sad note. Roy Anderson, our KURLING member from Grantham recently passed away. He joined our group three years ago after reading about us in the Grantham Journal. Roy was a quiet man but enjoyed coming out to Colsterworth and attending our social events and lunches. He once confided in me that although he played in Grantham as well, he never got the coffee and biscuits that we provided and he did love his biscuits. Rest in peace Roy.

COLSTERWORTH & DISTRICT GARDENERS & ALLOTMENT HOLDERS ASSOCIATION

Our Annual Produce and Handicrafts Show took place too late in August for a report to make it to this edition of In Touch - but next month we'll give details of trophy winners etc.We start our normal monthly meetings again on September 11th, with an Open Evening focussing on a talk by Jeff Bates. This is entitled 'Vegetables for Small Gardens' but will also cover items of interest to owners of large gardens, or people who have allotments. Jeff is a very experienced speaker, who did his apprenticeship at Windsor Castle, trained at Askham Bryan College, worked both in landscape design and as a lecturer - and for over twenty years has been a judge for East Midlands in Bloom.Visitors will be very, very welcome - you only pay £3, which includes coffee, tea and cake - and we also have a raffle. For any further information about the talk, or the Association in general, do phone 860312. Advance Notice for Members - Our October meeting will be a Gardeners Question Time and we hope to collect some questions in advance in September. It would be great if you could come on the 11th with ideas for questions either for me to write down - or already on paper!

Women’s Institute

Wow, what a busy day, let alone the weeks preceding the day, when we threw open the doors to our guests from each of the Institutes in the Kesteven Group - Barrowby, Harlaxton, Gonerby Hill Foot, Manthorpe, Ropsley, Grantham D.I.Y. Grantham Early Birds and Corby Glen who were in the Viking Group along with us until the Federation re-organised the Groups. And of course there were three Federation advisors all of whom had given advice to us over the years, and the County Federation Chairman. Our President, Janet Bennett welcomed them all to our Centenary Afternoon Tea Party. The afternoon began (once the photographers had us posing for posterity) with the singing of Jerusalem, with original printed copies purchased in 1928 at a rate of one penny each or four pence a dozen for those of us who didn't know the words (as if) which were found in the bottom of the archive chest (or the old brown case which weighs a ton when loaded with all the old Record and Minute books). The Minutes of the first meeting held in the school were read before a resume of the last hundred years of the Institute's activities was read by Janet,

Gillian Dexter, Helen Scorror and Dot Williams. Patricia Read our Groups current Adviser, said what an achievement it was by the members to reach their centenary after coming so close to closure. It was Janet who had stepped forward at our darkest hour, with no one willing to take on the presidency to save the day. The six members attending that meeting have been joined along the way until now when we can boast of a membership of twenty three. Debbie Venn, Chairman of the County Federation presented Janet with a certificate from the National Federation congratulating the Institute on it's achievement. A poem, entitled “100 Years Old” written by Joyce Lucas, one of our guest speakers this year, was read by our member Sandra Quinsee who we were to discover has two very talented daughters, Tina, who entertained us with songs from the ten decades (and had us singing in the aisles as they say). A sketch with dialogue comprised of television programmes was performed by Hazel Taylor and Yours Truly. The sketch had been performed at one of our Christmas meetings years ago. Then it was all hands to the deck to pour the tea and invite everyone to “dig in” to a veritable feast of of savouries and cakes like we had never seen before, all courtesy of Sandra's other daughter Nicola who had also made the celebratory cake. And what a cake it was, decorated around the base with all the

activities with which the W.I. is associated. All in miniature, a cake stall, raffles, resolution placards, tiny pots and jam and the top tier even flew bunting all created in icing. A cake has never been so photographed by so many “snappers”. It was a shame to cut it, but Dora, our longest serving member did just that, flanked by Janet and Dot and then the champagne flowed after which all the members entertained our guests with a rendition of the song “At our Institute” bringing the house down. A vote of thanks to the committee and all those who had helped in making the afternoon a success was given by Rachel Topham. The toast was “Colsterworth W.I. and the next hundred years”. Janet thanked everyone especially Tina who had entertained us and Nicola for all her handiwork in the catering department. There was so much food that most of us trotted home with a doggy bag. Our next meeting is on 19th September when our guest speaker is Angela Riley who is giving a talk and demonstration on Corn Dollies. So why not join us in the Sports and Social Club at the usual time of two o'clock. We are sure that there will be cake, probably not so ornate or salubrious as this last meeting, but never the less just as tasty. Competition is “a yellow article” (a corn dolly maybe you've just made? No?, oh alright then) See you at two? Fine.

numbers in gardens but this seems to be the summer of the Red Admiral. Dragon and Damselflies have also been seen in gardens with no ponds because they will travel some distance from breeding sites to feed. The most unusual record was of a male Banded Demoisefly flicking its wings to display his turquoise blue spots.

To Look For In September -

Now is a good time to look at trees. Have we more than one mature oak visible in a public place (e.g.roadside verge)? How many (once abundant) ash and horse chestnuts? How are the trees planted by Tree For Life doing? And memorial trees like one in Woolsthorpe Graveyard? Are they in fruit? What else is living with them? I look forward to all your records and observations at 61 Woolsthorpe Road, 860465 e-mail [email protected]

Many of our galls become visible on leaves, stems and fruits during August. The fluffy red Robin’s Pincushion on rose is amongst the showiest and is frequent on the Colsterworth Nature Trail. The red Nail Galls are emerging on Sycamore and Maple. A Knopper Gall was brought in for identification complete with the acorn it covered and accompanying leaves and twig. The underside of the leaves had both Silk Buttons and Common Spangle Galls and the remains of the Oyster Galls. Some of these galls carried ‘inquilines’ (tiny invertebrates which take advantage of the changed structure and food store of the gall). An ungalled leaf had aphids trapped in the webbing of a spider and a cotton wool ball containing spider’s eggs. There were three kinds of lichens on the twig, home to mites and minute insects. Multiply this by the number of possibilities for unnoticed life in all the branches and leaves and fruits of a mature tree. Not just ‘amazing’ but almost beyond comprehension. Every day that same tree is taking water from underground and transpiring it back into the atmosphere, cleaning the air through gas exchange, providing shelter and shade and food. Every time a mature tree comes down all this is lost. A dozen new trees will not replace it. The loss of our parish trees continues apace. It is inevitable if they are considered unsafe directly to people or to buildings. But don’t let us imagine it doesn’t matter. It does.

Giant Puffballs have appeared in grassland at the side of Old Post Lane. These football sized fungi may be enough to make a sizeable meal (‘fry slices in butter’ the recipes say), but as always with fungi a word of caution. Some years ago a local building society agreed

to put a display in their window to advertise a course on “Mushrooms and Toadstools”. The centrepiece was a shining white Giant Puffball. The next morning when the front door was opened a terrible smell wafted out. The puffball had cracked, revealing the solid flesh transformed into a malodorous grey powder.

At the time of writing (August 23”), the few butterflies and dragonflies braving the cloudy, intermittently wet weather, are all the more welcome. Eggs laid earlier by the striking black and red Cinnabar Moths have become smart yellow and black caterpillars. They are most usually found on Ragwort (Senecio jacobae), or even on the smaller Groundsel (Senecio vulgaris) but some were found on an indoor plant put outside. This was puzzling, until it was realised that the blue and white flowers of the daisy-like plant Cineraria had the scientific name Senecio cineraria. The leaves probably smelt and tasted the same to the moth. Holly and Common Blue Butterflies, Meadow and Hedge Browns, Small and Large Skippers have all been seen in small
