  • We have made it to serious summer and several of our major events for the year will be occurring over the coming months beginning with our Northwest Regional Meet in Bellevue, WA.

Regional meets are a fine tradition across the nation in MAFCA. You can attend any or all of them from the NW Regional to meets in Iowa, Michigan or California. The NW Regional will be from August 22 through August 25 and there are still places available if you haven’t signed up yet. By the way, you don’t have to come with your Model A if it isn’t quite road ready yet. A meet like this is a great opportunity to see all types of Model A’s – some even for sale if you are still looking.

In our local area we have a special opportunity this year with the Smooth Rider Tour that has been organized for the Walla Walla, Pendleton and Columbia Basin clubs. You will be traveling from Walla Walla with an overnight stop in Clarkston, then on to Enterprise, Oregon for two nights plus local touring, then back to Walla Walla. This four day, three night tour through the beautiful Blue Mountains will be a great adventure.

In October there is The Canyonlands National MAFCA Tour in Southern Utah that will be touring several National Parks with day trips from a home base at Kanab, UT.

Welcome to our new members Mike and Linda Jzyk and Jim and Sharon Savidge. Please ask lots of questions about activities and cars. Let us know what your expectations are and any ideas you might have for future activities. We have members that know a lot about Model A’s and are well connected when help is needed!

  • 4th of July CelebrationWe met at Rick and Janet Budzeck’s home in Richland on the 4th of July to celebrate our nation’s Independence Day. Budzeck’s procured the pulled pork from Porter’s Real Barbecue and everyone else brought a potluck plate.

New members, Mike and Linda Jzyk, were in attendance as well as Jim and Sharon Savidge. No one thought to bring fireworks so after lunch we all lined up to take the photo below.

Participants included left to right top row: Jim & Sharon Savidge, Robin & Tom Eldhardt, Bruce & Shelley Clark, Blaine McGillicuddy, Linda & Mike Jzyk and Mara & Jan Jackson. Bottom row includes Mary Fraser, Sue & Larry Campbell, Marshall & Sharon Hauck, Bev McGillicuddy and Janet & Rick Budzeck.

A couple of new cars to the club include Mike & Linda Jzyk’s ‘34’ Ford 5-window coupe and Bruce & Shelley’s 1929 Special Coupe. Jan & Mara’s Sport Coupe is in the foreground and the star of the show, Bob, is in the background.

Mike & Linda’s 1930 Roadster is currently residing in Jan & Mara’s garage awaiting new brakes.

  • Welcome New MembersJim & Sharon Savidge

Jim and Sharon purchased their 1929 Sport Coupe from eBay. It was located in Texas and was transported to their home in Pasco. Tom Eldhardt and Jan Jackson went over to Jim’s shop and did a safety analysis. So far the car has had the brakes adjusted, front brake restored, new ameter, new speedometer cable and some minor tinkering. Welcome to the Columbia Basin Model A Club, Jim and Sharon!

  • Restoration Projects Model A Ford Fasteners – U-BoltsSo what are “U-Bolts” and are they really in the shape of a “U”? There are two shapes of “U-Bolts” found in the Model A Ford. One type looks like a “U” with a rounded bottom (half of a circle shape) when viewed from its side. The second type is similar looking, except the bottom is squared/ flat (at right angles) when viewed from its side. In both cases the legs of the bolt have been cross drilled for installation of a castle nut and a cotter pin. These “U-Bolts” are mounted with the “U” part of the bolt at the top with the nuts on the bottom (hanging down) below the Frame. 1928-29 vehicles: The square bottom “U-Bolt” is used to hold the one-piece Front Spring Lower Plate Clip Bar to the underside of the Frame. It is also used to hold the Crank Handle Guide with the flat areas located to the sides of the guide to the top of the Frame. 1930-31 vehicles: The round bottom “U-Bolt” is used to hold the one-piece Front Spring Lower Plate Clip Bar to the underside of the Frame. It is also used to hold the Crank Handle Guide with the round grooves located to the sides of the guide to the top of the Frame. 1928-31 vehicles: The square bottom “U-Bolt” is used to hold the two-piece Rear Spring Clip Bars to the underside of the Frame. Each “U-Bolt” uses one of the clips to hold the spring in place. There are two sizes of clips: • The clips with the taller 1-1/8” high center section are found on lighter weight vehicles that have 7 or 8 leaf springs installed, such as: Roadster, Coupe, Phaeton, etc. • The clips with the shorter 5/8” high center section are found on heavier weight vehicles that have 10 or 12 leaf springs installed, such as: Tudors, Fordors, etc.

  • Fashion FeatureFashions of the Model A Ford Era

Fashion 101Your child will jump for joy when she sees the latest styles for girls that can be made from the McCall Printed Pattern #5509. Does she like an open neckline or standard type collar? The short sleeves work well for those hot summer days and the long sleeves are warm and cozy for the chilly winter weather. The fanciful belt tied on the left hip is quite whimsical.

Knowing Your Model ATrue or False?Questions1. The common Service/Emergency Brake setup was

replaced with a separate Emergency brake cross shaft that was mounted behind the Service brake cross shaft.

    2. The Tie Rod End assemblies are stamped with

either an “R” (Right) or an “L” (Left). The end stamped with an “R” must be installed on the Right side of the vehicle.

    3. The large Bumper Outside Clamp Medallions

are used with the Clamp Backing Plates to set/maintain the width of the Bumper Bars.

    4. The Throttle and Spark Retard levers are located

inside of the Steering Column. 5. On the Assembly Line the Wheels (Rim, Tire &

Tube, Hub Caps) were all installed on the Hub/Drums at one time.

ANSWERS1. TRUE – The new design for the separate

Emergency Brake setup was made by installing an Emergency cross-shaft between the frame rails and behind the original common brake setup.

    2. FALSE - The “R” and “L” refer to the thread direction on the Tie Rod bar. The “R” being that this end has Right Hand threads and the “L” being for Left Hand threads. This allows you to turn the bar to adjust the Toe-In or Toe-Out needed.

    3. TRUE – The Medallions have a raised back portion

to set the space between the Bumper bars and a bolt to hold the Bumper bars to the Bumper Arms. The Clamp backs have a slight overhang on their ends that hold the bars together.

    4. TRUE – The levers are located inside of the

Steering column from below the Steering Wheel to the Steering Sector.

    5. FALSE – The Wheels (Rim, Tire & Tube) were

installed PRIOR to installing the Hub Caps. Common practice today is to install the Hub Cap to the Wheel Rim and bend down four of the tabs PRIOR to installing the Wheel on the vehicle.

  • MAFCA NewsMAFCA Programs for Members/Chapters(Article obtained from the MAFCA website)

MAFCA’s Membership and Marketing Director Mike Kelly, of the Northwest Regional Group’s Evergreen A’s chapter, summarized some of the current programs MAFCA has for members and chapters.

Ambassador Program: Identification of a member from each chapter with the enthusiasm and a willingness to help recruit members for their chapter, as well as MAFCA. As of March 8, 120 ambassadors had been identified with a goal of having one ambassador identified from each chapter. (Editor’s Note: Mike asked Jan Jackson of our club to serve as a chapter ambassador.)

Blue Oval Program: Recognition of those that have, through their efforts, brought new members into MAFCA. Not only will they receive a Blue Oval Sticker for the inside of their Model A window, they will be entered into the bimonthly Blue Oval drawing for a $50 credit at the MAFCA store.

Free Membership Program: Free membership to MAFCA for 2019 is offered to all Model A enthusiasts who have never been members of MAFCA. After reading the Restorer magazine and seeing the benefits of membership, MAFCA’s belief is they will continue their membership in MAFCA.

Event Kits Program: Upon request, MAFCA will ship to a MAFCA chapter member an event kit that includes a 6’ tablecloth, promotional posters, Restorer magazine, free membership forms and conversational starting files. This kit is intended to be used at various chapter events such as car shows, swap meets and special chapter outings.

  • Meeting MinutesThe July meeting was a potluck held at the home of Rick and Janet Budzeck to celebrate our country’s independence. The get-together was enjoyed by Blaine and Bev McGillicuddy, Tom and Robin Eldhardt, Jan and Mara Jackson, Marshall and Sharon Hauck, Mary Fraser, Larry and Sue Campbell, Mike and Linda Jzyk and Bruce and Shelley Clark. Jan introduced Mike and Linda, close friends of theirs who recently joined our club, and Jim and Sharon Savidge, also new members. Before indulging in the meal, Marshall opened the business portion of the meeting, the June minutes were approved with a motion and the treasurer’s report was provided by Mary.

Correspondence: Mara stated there was no new correspondence.

Sunshine: Bev reported no cards were sent out.

Tours: Rick reported no new tours have been added to the schedule, but he reminded those present of the Northwest Regional Meet in Bellevue, WA from Wednesday, August 22nd to Sunday, August 25th; the States Day Parade in Prosser on Monday, September 2nd; and the Smooth Rider tour in September. Old Business: Marshall commented on the Northwest Regional Meet and encouraged anyone interested in going to turn in their registration and join the fun.

New Business: Mara announced that club shirts in both teal and white are going to be ordered for the new members. If existing members would like to order a shirt, please contact Mara before the end of next week.

Announcements: Jan asked everyone to step outside for a group photo after the business meeting. Marshall shared the names of those individuals celebrating birthdays in July and thanked Rick and Janet for hosting this special occasion.

Projects: Blaine reported he supervised while Jan installed a starter in his A400. He also wondered if anyone knew where he could purchase some ‘wire clips’ to hold wiring in place, but no one knew for sure. Bruce stated he drove his ‘project’ car today and it was running pretty good.

Those club members who brought food items for donation to the food pantry increased the total for the month to 18.1 pounds, which is a year-to-date total of 118.8 pounds.

With no further business, the meeting was adjourned with a motion.
