I was disappointed, of course, that the People’s Veto petition campaign failed to gather enough signatures to get repeal questions onto the November 2019 ballot concerning Taxpayer Funding for Abortions and Doctor Assisted Suicide. The petition circulators needed to come up with 60,000+ valid signatures and fell short. The laws we objected to will stand.

There were ten of us from GSP who circulated the petitions after Mass a couple of weekends in August. Most of us, like me, were newcomers to the petition process. It was an education. Petition circulating is something like clam digging—not as easy as it looks. Clams don’t just jump into your basket, and signatures don’t get to the state capitol without a lot of help either. A circulator needs to register in advance, collect signatures on numerous petition forms sorted by town, get the petition pages notarized, then take them to their respective towns to have each town clerk verify that the signatures really did come from their own registered voters. Only then are petitions turned in to Augusta for counting. I want to express thanks to all my fellow petition circulators for their efforts and commend them for their patience and dedication in meeting the public and doing all the paper pushing that went with the petition drive.

Legal or political failure is not an occasion to be discouraged. We pick up the pieces and go on leading our lives, each of us trying our best to do what’s right. We can manage to live well enough with laws we disagree with. Those doesn’t hide or change the guiding star of life, the Golden Rule. The Knights of Columbus offers a fine opportunity to exercise Charity and make the world a better place. The goal of making “Thy Kingdom Come On Earth As It Is In Heaven” is ongoing endlessly We little humans can only do the best we are able, in the place we are at, in the time we are allotted.

As Coach Vince Lombardi used to say with ten little two letter words, “If it is to be, it is up to me.”

Farewell

Guy Cote passed away on August 31. Father Labarre picked him out of his little pastoral flock at Dunkin Donuts a few years ago as a prospective Knight and brought him into our council. Brother Guy came to join us relatively late in life. He was limited in his ability to participate in council projects due to ill health, but Brother Guy was a member in good standing, and was with us in spirit. We will miss him and pray for the repose of his soul.

September Knight of the Month

In Sweden they give out the Nobel Prize for brilliant ideas; here in Biddo we award the Knight of the Month. Brother Dan Bedard takes the cake (pun intended) for his brain child—the Mini Pies. This confection came in 6 sensational flavors and took Good Shepherd Parish by storm back in August. The result was a very effective fund raiser that brought in over $900 to the council’s coffers and put a smile on everyone’s face. We are looking forward to the time the Mini Pies return next summer!

Gas Card Raffle

We drew the names of 5 raffle winners at our September business meeting. Each won a $200 Exxon Mobil gas card. This year, winners were all female, so we guys will have to try harder next year. Congratulations to Noelline Picard, Helene Fortier, Mary Ellen Desjardins, Denise Gauvin and Aline Jacques. Sincere thanks to all who sold tickets for this successful annual fundraiser and to the many who bought them.

Walk for Life

The council’s fourth annual Walk for Life took place on the fair, warm morning of September 21, covering a 2½ mile loop along Main, Alfred and Elm Streets. About 20 people took part, between Brother Knights, family and friends. The Walk was particularly successful as a fundraiser, bringing in over $2,500 in donations toward Culture of Life related causes. A couple of individuals were recognized as leading fund raisers: Brother Dave Poissant rounded up over $1,000 worth of business donations and Pris Huot had over $500 worth of individual donations pledged to her in the Walk. We hope that we will attract many more walkers next year to join us in this pleasant event supporting a good cause. Brother Don Maurice has a write-up later in this very newsletter!

Gift Certificates

Several donations to the Walk for Life were gift certificates from local businesses. We were happy to accept these although they can’t be put in the bank as-is. Accordingly, the council needs to convert them to dollars in order to have funds to deposit. So any Brothers interested in buying any of the following gift certificates at face value may do so:

Others include pizza deals from Domino’s and Louis Pizza, or a party sandwich deal from Subway.

Some of these represent potential Christmas gifts, or treats for you or the family. Please contact Grand Knight Dave at 468-7324 if interested. First come, first served!

Calendar Raffles

Raffle lovers love these. The Calendar Raffle features $10 tickets, each good for 92 drawings, to be picked each day between January 1 and April 1, 2020. Most daily prizes are $50, with $100 winners drawn Saturdays and Sundays. New Year’s, Martin Luther King, and Presidents Day drawings are for $500, and a $2,000 prize will be drawn on April Fool’s Day—no kidding. Maine State Council KofC sponsors the Calendar Raffle, and assures us that no more than 2,500 tickets will be sold statewide. If you are wondering what to get to stuff Christmas stockings, why not consider these? Contact Brother Dan Bedard at 229-4650 or GK Dave for tickets or more info.

Dues Are Due

Financial Secretary Dan Bedard has just mailed 2020 dues notices to all our council membership. At $30 for 1st, 2nd & 3rd Degree members, and $35 for 4th Degree Sir Knights, the going rate is the same as it has been for many years. Brother Dan is hoping for a complete and timely response from all Brother Knights, so please remit your own payment promptly in the return envelope enclosed with the billing letter. Thank you for your support.

We welcome donations from any Brothers who are able to pay something additional to help cover the cost of dues for those who don’t have the money. In recent years, many have come through generously this way. Thanks for that. The spirit of Charity is alive and well in St Joseph Council.

Honorary Life members are not obliged to pay dues, as everyone knows, but may make donations as above. Please find your paper membership cards for 2020 enclosed with the mailing, Brother Honorary Life Knights.

Cemetery Bricks

The work is done now on the walkway in front of the Memorial to the Unborn at St Joseph Cemetery. The brick walkway is bordered by memorial message bricks, including those pictured that our council ordered in honor of our departed Brother Knights. The location is just across from the flag pole in front of the cemetery chapel if you wish to go and take a look. The Friends of Father Zenon Decary carried out this project and did an able job with it. We are glad to have been supporters.

Helpers Needed for GSP Parish Fair Nov 8 thru 10

Hear ye, hear ye! If you are keen to help in a big, fun, important event in parish life, then this is the thing for you! St Joseph Council 12941 will be manning the kitchen all weekend at the annual Good Shepherd Parish Fair. We will have need of food cookers, runners, servers at the kitchen window, kitchen cleaners & dishwashers and bus people for keeping the hall tables neat. Brother Knights, family and friends are all invited to take part. Covering everything all weekend long requires organization and a schedule. Brother Dave Gagnon (cell # 468-0148) is in charge of that. If you would like to help in the kitchen, you must make schedule arrangements with him in advance. Thanks for your involvement!

Just a reminder, too, that you don’t need to work at the fair to stop in and have a little fun. You will see a great many pleasant, familiar faces. The kids and the old folks will love it, so bring them along with you. Looking forward to seeing you at Good Shepherd Fair 2019.

Bean Supper Recap

Our Brother Knights put on a baked bean supper on September 7 to raise a bit of money that we could put into our fund for charitable causes. The event was well staffed but could have been better attended. As it was, the supper served 75 diners and cleared a bit over $200. A big THANK YOU to all involved!

The Season Concludes

Our council Tootsie Roll Drives, Saco Farmers Market Bread Sales and the Boston Red Sox all wrapped up their seasons within the last week to 10 days. St Joseph Council definitely had a better season than the Sox. We

probably won’t mention the baseball team again before next spring, but we will definitely report details of the other two in the newsletter next month. Stay tuned!

District Deputy ReportMike Bolduc, District Deputy, District 14

Thanks to all the brothers in the district who participated in the district Mass on September 8 at St. Joseph church. This event occurs quarterly in our district and has been very well attended since we started doing it three years ago. Our next district Mass will be on January 19 at St. Margaret church in O.O.B. at the 8:30 am Mass. On this date council # 2266 in O.O.B. also has a breakfast going on in the hall adjacent to the church. GK Jim Duclos will be handling the logistics of the Mass and we will have our regalia, as always, present at the Mass. Mark your calendars!

On Friday, September 13 a special event occurred in Biddeford and many brother knights participated in getting this project to fruition. PSD Phil Lizotte kicked off the fundraising by visiting councils in the Cumberland and York counties for donations and I’m happy to say that all three active councils in District 14 were very generous in this endeavor. The Knights of Columbus in Maine gifted a total of $20,000 to build a gazebo at the St. Andre’s Health Care Facility on Pool Street in Biddeford. Bishop Deeley presided at the event and many other dignitaries were present. For the total news of the event you can speak with GK Dave McDonald for all the insight; I couldn’t attend since I was in Texas visiting family. Take the time to visit some of our brothers at St. Andre Health Care and make sure to visit the gazebo and the space it occupies; it’s well worth your time to do so. Nice job by brothers Gervais Dube, project leader, and brothers Dave McDonald, Conan Conaboy and Denis Litalien for assembling the gazebo. Just another success story in our community headed by our Knights of Columbus. My kudos to all involved.

Assembly MessageMike Bolduc, Color Corps Commander

I want to thank my Color Corps brothers for performing at the exemplification in Greenville, Maine on September 14. I wasn’t able to attend since I was visiting family in Texas, but Sir Knight Simon Mutapa took over the reins as Commander and did a great job in presenting our colors (Thanks, Simon!). For this event we had to practice on three occasions, as we do monthly for our

Columbian Memo, October 2019 Page 6

regalia at St. Joseph church. We are always looking for other brothers to step up and march with us, whether it’s the Color Corps or just wearing our regalia for our church and funeral marches. Please contact me (468-0106) or brother Jerry, our FN (205-9779) for more info.

A final thanks to our Sir Knights who performed at our District Mass on September 8 at St. Joseph church. Don’t forget our monthly practices are the first Tuesday of the month at St. Joseph church. These practices are invaluable to the success of the fourth-degree regalia.

Walk For LifeDon Maurice, Director, Culture of Life

This years walk was better than last year’s! Together, we were able to raise funds of over $2,500 dollars, which exceeds last year’s total by nearly $1,500! Thank you brother David Poissant, who was able to raise over $1,300 by himself. He is also our newest member to the Culture of Life. Clearly, he is a great member to have on our team! We all pitched in to raise these funds; thank you all!

This year we had a total of 18 walkers. That’s close to last year’s head count. We plan to walk again next year. Please consider walking with us!

Financial CornerDan Bedard, Financial Secretary

Fiscal Year 2019 is in the books now and a new Budget Year 2020 has begun. I would like to say thank you to all for making 2019 a success. Working together for a common cause made us successful. Charity, Unity and Fraternity stirred together with God’s love was our binding glue of success.

Council dues letters will be going out in the mail this Friday. This year the dues are time sensitive so please read closely to the dates. To all the members who made a donation to brothers in need, “Thank you” on behalf of the 20 council members who received that gift of Charity.

Many projects are finishing, and some are just starting. Keep Christ in Christmas will officially launch this weekend at Most Holy Trinity Church. The dates are on the Council Calendar. We purchased 108 Boxes and 50 Magnets. Together let’s spread the word by evangelizing Christ’s birth to all our family members and friends by spreading the word of God’s love. The committee will be reaching out for assistance in supporting the program by manning the tables at church. Thank you ahead of time for all your support.
