PILGRIMS ARRIVE IN 1620

IN AUTUMN 1621 THE PILGRIMS WERE STARVING!!

THE INDIANS GAVE FOOD TO THE STARVING PILGRIMS

The pilgrims wanted to say Thankyou so they started celebrating THANKSGIVING DAY every year. This year it was on Thursday, the 23rd of November.

But what happened to the Indians?

NOW LETS LOOK AT THE LIFE OF CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS

Christopher Columbus was born in 1451 in Genoa.

He became a sailor when he was only 13 !!!

He wanted to find a shortcut from Spain to Asia, a land of gold and spices. He thought if he sailed west from Spain, he would get to INDIA

BUT EVERYONE THOUGHT THE WORLD WAS FLAT!!!!

THE SILK ROUTE

He asked the king and queen of Spain to help him, and they agreed.

They gave him three ships- the Nia, the Pinta, and the Santa Maria.

Christopher Columbus and his crew set sail for Asia. The trip across the Atlantic Ocean took 35 days Columbus and his crew were running out of food!

First Voyage 1492

"Land! Ahead!" someone called out one day. Finally, Columbus and his crew saw land. But that land was not INDIA. Where had he landed?

SOUTH AMERICA!! He named the island San Salvador.

WHY DID HE CALL THE NATIVES INDIANS

BECAUSE HE WAS CONVINCED HE HAD LANDED IN INDIA!!!

Second Voyage 1494-1494 with 17 ships carrying supplies and about 1,200 men to colonize the region. The colonists included priests, farmers and soldiers.

Third Voyage: 1498 South American coast

Fourth AND FINAL Voyage: 1502 1504.

Christopher Columbus died in 1506

When Columbus returned to Spain, he told people about his trip to India.

HE NEVER KNEW THAT HE HAD DISCOVERED AMERICA !!!!

BUT Who discovered America before Columbus ?
