Ahh, those idyllicdays of summer. Themonth of June isspent relishing thelack of schoolschedules. By Julyit’s just long sunnydays spent in abathing suit, leafingthrough a magazinewhile your kids play. Then it’s August andyou’ve had enoughof the heat and hu-midity. It’s the dayyou start feeling likea cruise ship socialdirector for yourchildren that you re-alize you’ve hadenough of summer.

What’s left to do when the pool startslooking old and boring? How to finish offthe rest of summer without spending it in

the house facing a computer or TV screen?Tired of hearing, “It’s too hot to go outside!I’m bored. There’s nothing to do.”

■ Remember the gift of boredom.Nowhere in the job description for parentdoes it say that you must entertain yourchildren 24/7. Boredom offers the opportu-nity for a child to think for himself. “Youcan’t think of anything to do? I hate whenthat happens to me.” Give them the spaceto create their own solution.

■ Structure is still important. Summerdays aren’t organized quite as rigidly asschool days, but they require a uniquestructure of their own. What will help theday flow smoothly? If it’s important to youthat everyone be out of PJs and finishedwith breakfast before noon, make that theexpectation. “Breakfast is done by 10 oryou make your own.” If you don’t wantyour children sitting in front of an electron-ic screen for hours on end, let them know.

How to finish off a great summer

Imagine stepping back in time wherethere are no cell phones, cars, television, ordrive-throughs. Now imagine pumpingyour drinking water, keeping a root cellarbecause you grow and make your ownfood, and living with no air conditioning inthe humid heat of July in Ohio. All of thesething were daily life in the 1880s on anOhio farm, and you and your kids can ex-perience it ... for FREE! Slate Run LivingHistorical Farm is about a 35 minute drivefrom Columbus and a beyond worthy wayto spend the day. My friend and I took ourkids ranging in ages from 3 to 10, and allof us had a terrific time.

We drove up and it looked similar to anyof the Central Ohio Metro Parks – ampleparking, wooden display board with parkmaps and Park Scope Magazine, waterfountains, and bathrooms (yet, not themost well-cared for in the Metro Park sys-tem). Then we walked down the rocky trailentrance to the farm. Let’s just say my eyeslit up, the kids started running and scream-ing “chickens!,” and I felt very anachronis-tic. The start of our visit encompassedclimbing fences and talking to the chick-ens, we then proceeded to the farm house. There was a lovely woman planting flowersin front of the house decked out in 1800sgarb. She said we could go on in the house, which was a replica of a two-story familyhome completely furnished in items from

the past. The kidsplayed with the toysthat years ago wereprobably made bythe dad or anothermale family mem-ber, not bought atyour local Toys RUs, and were enam-ored with the interi-or design (we don’tnormally see suchornate wall paper inour friends’ homes). The first floor of thehouse was open andpatrons were al-lowed in the kitchen, dining and livingrooms.

Our visit took us exploring the vegetablegarden, the root cellar, smoke house, andthen back to the barn and farm area wherethe animals were kept. The farm offersworkshops and tours all year long. Patronscan learn how sheep were sheered, how to“drive” draft horses, and how the gardenfood was preserved, among many otherthings. Slate Run also offers storytimes, and preschoolers can experience some ofthe daily chores and fun kids had through

Marisol Petry believes the cardinal is thesymbol that best portrays the state of Ohio.

The 11-year-old Lewis Center residentdrew the red bird wrapped in a Girl Scoutsash. Her design is now a patch that can bepurchased by each Scout who attends theOhio State Fair.

Marisol’s design was chosen from 150submissions by Scouts from across the stateto represent this year’s fair. The only designrules when entering the contest were that itshould represent the Buckeye State and GirlScouts and fit into a three-inch circle orsquare.

The three-year member of Troop 374 saidshe was surprised by the phone call she re-ceived early this month informing her of thewin, because she said she didn’t think a de-sign as “simple” as hers could win.

“My patch was just basically about whatI think best represents Ohio – the cardinal –and what best represents Girl Scouts to meis the sash,” she said of the drawing she sub-mitted in early May.

Kim Clark, Heartland Council chief pro-gram officer, said while council girls havewon the design contest in the past, Marisol

is the only one in “quite a while” to comeout on top and represent the fair that takesplace in the council’s hometown.

Although the five-color design tookMarisol only about 30 minutes to think upand draw with colored pencils, she had beenthinking of the contest for a year, she said.

“The reason I submitted a design is be-cause every year, my mom and I will go tothe Ohio State Fair and we will see differentpatches that the girls have designed, andevery year we say that I should enter,” shesaid. “I did it and I still can’t believe I won.”

Marisol said she decided to join the troopwhen its leaders announced open member-ship at St. Michael School in Worthington, where she will enter sixth grade this fall. She said what she enjoys most about beinginvolved is seeing her friends at meetingsand attending camp

“It means a lot to to me, knowing that the

design that I created will be worn by GirlScouts all across Ohio,” Marisol said. “Itmeans a lot to me also because I care a lotabout Girl Scouts. It’s such a great feelinggetting new patches.”

Since joining the troop, Marisol hasearned a sash full of patches as a Brownieand about 75 so far as a Junior Girl Scout.

Marisol’s favorite badges include her jun-ior wings and rainbow because she said itshows how much she’s grown up over thepast year. She’s also proud of her multiple

Summer Buzz We've all had it, that nasty insect bite that itches for days on end. Children are susceptible to bi tes, and often are unaware they are being bitten, so may have dozens of bites at once. Some children can have a mosquit o bite swell to the size of a walnut, or larger! The best protection is to avoid being outside in the early morning and early evening, and apply insect repellant on children over 6 months of age. Be sure to wash it off at bedt ime!

AUGUST

“No computer or TV between lunch anddinner.”

■ Search out the places you’ve neverbeen. When the ‘go to’ activities of summerget old, it’s time to find the small andunique attractions. Look for factories thatgive tours (think ice cream and candy),small out of the way museums (check withyour local historical society for ideas), orstate parks. Partner with another familyand you’ve created an event!

■ Save something special for yourself.Parents, by definition, are on the giving endof the job. If we don’t take time to rechargeour batteries we may find that we becomeshort tempered and unhappy because there issimply nothing left to give. What would refu-el you? Time with friends? Reading a book?Taking a walk? Focus on how you can makethat happen. Hire a sitter or share childcarewith a friend. Write it on your calendar thesame way you would a doctor’s appointment.Keep that commitment. Not only do you feelenergized, but you model for your childrenthat you are also important and deserve timefor yourself.

■ Create an end of summer tradition.Traditions give children a sense of familyand help them understand the rhythms ofthe year. As summer draws to a close askthem to create a day of summer experi-ences that they will miss. By spending oneday revisiting all their favorite places yousend them back to school feeling likethey’ve had the summer they hoped for.

Instead of dragging through the monthof August you may find that you’ve reener-gized your summer. You know you’ve beensuccessful when you stare sadly at thefliers announcing the Back to School Salesand you can’t figure out where the summerhas gone!

games and songs from the 1800s. Checkout their site here for program information:metroparks.net/ParksSlateRunFarm.aspx.

The people who work the farm looked asif they stepped out of the Little House onthe Prairie, and most of them are histori-ans. They are friendly and ready to answerquestions or share their experiences work-ing there. My friend’s sunglasses fell intothe turkey yard and one of the caretakerslet her go in and get them. The male turkeycame running up, plumage and all, andstarted gobbling at her. Did you know maleturkeys have beards? Neither did we ... itwas kind of weird. Anyhoo ... there’s lots ofexploration waiting for you and hands-onstuff to do - just think farm, animals, oldbut “new to them” toys, pumps for water, and lots of room to run. What more could akid (or kid at heart) want?

Be sure to check the website for hoursand I would suggest visiting during theweek if you like it less crowded.

The Slate Run Living Historical Farm is

located at 1375 S.R. 674 North, CanalWinchester, phone 614-833-1880.

A few tips:■ There are designated areas for lunch

in the farm area, and plenty of places out-side of the farm if you want to just plopdown for a picnic.

■ Bathrooms are located outside of thefarm area – which can be far away for littleones who have to go “now!” Be prepared.

■ Strollers would be fine, but not fun tomaneuver through grass and rocks.

■ Don’t be afraid to talk to the caretak-ers of the farm. They are more than willingto share information.

■ Don’t be afraid to explore, just leaveareas as you found them.

■ Keep an eye on your kids around thefarm machinery and animals.

■ Bring plenty of water and sunscreen.Kristin Marks (CbusMom) is a stay-at-
