Learning Environment: • Wireless technology throughout the

facility provides immediate access for all students at all times to online project-based learning software and provides maximum flexibility for reconfiguration of learning spaces

• Open, collaborative learning “studios” reflect the 21st century work environment with minimal physical barriers,a contemporary color scheme, partial-height walls, exposed building structure and systems

• Various of learning space sizes accommodate a wide variety of learning modalities and can be easily reconfigured to accommodate future enhancements in the New Tech model

• The Columbus Signature Academy program is based upon a Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) focus and has a flexible science lab that is shared among the studios

Physical Environment: • The exterior was renovated through the

addition of large windows and two new entries

• The interior of the building conveys the interior environment of a 21st century work place rather than the traditional 20th century school

• A play of old, exposed structural technology against the new, exposed information technology creates a vibrant, contemporary learning environment that instantly captures and inspires the imagination of the students

• Energy efficient mechanical, plumbing and electrical equipment and materials have been utilized to provide an entirely new HVAC system, lighting, kitchen, science lab and restrooms

• Adequate natural daylighting reduces the need for artificial lighting

Planning Process: • The Planning Team included members of

the BCSC administration, the principal, faculty members, BCSC facility and maintenance staff, and a representative from the community as well as the CSO Team

• The CSO Team visited other New Tech High Schools in California and met with the development team from the New Tech Foundation

• Regularly scheduled planning meetings were conducted to encourage collaboration among the planning team

• Computer-generated, three-dimensional images provided team members with a realistic view of the finished spaces

• Throughout the first year of occupancy, the Team has met and discussed “lessons learned” that will be applied to the planning process for the second phase
