images that represent thoughts, concepts, objects,

    or experiences.

    ` Are all symbols verbal?

` NO! Things like clothing, tone of voice, posture, or

  • 8/3/2019 Com110-_Ch._1 (1)

    12/36

` What are some ways symbols can be

    misinterpreted?

` How can we avoid this?

    ` What does being other-orientedmean?

` Other-oriented means we acknowledge the

perspective of others, not just the creator of the

    message.

  • 8/3/2019 Com110-_Ch._1 (1)

    13/36

` What does it mean to communicate competently?

` What are the 3 criteria you must follow to

communicate competently? The message should be understood as the

communicator intended it to be understood

The message should achieve the communicators

    intended effect

    The message should be ethical

  • 8/3/2019 Com110-_Ch._1 (1)

    14/36

    ` Why is this important?

` What are some obstacles to understanding?

` How do you think we can overcome these

    obstacles?

    15/36

` When we communicate we have a specific goal in

    16/36

` What are ethics? Ethics are beliefs, values and moral principles by which

we determine what is right or wrong.

    `

Why is it important to have an ethical message?

    17/36

` A child is very sick, and on the verge of death.

The pharmacy has the cure for the childs illness,

but it is very expensive. The parents cannot afford

the cure, and have exhausted all avenues toobtain the money. One night the dad breaks into

the pharmacy and steals the cure for his child.

` Is this ethical or unethical behavior? Why?

  • 8/3/2019 Com110-_Ch._1 (1)

    18/36

` All cultures have ethical codes. Some may bedifferent, but many cultures value the same things.

` Most of the major religious across the world teach how

to treat others. Christianity- The Golden Rule- Do unto others what you would

    have others do unto you

Islam- No one of you is a believer until he desires for hisbrother what he does for himself.

Judaism- What is hateful to you, do not do to others Hinduism- Do nothing to other which would cause pain if done

    to you.

` Credo for Communication Ethics: Ethical communication is fundamental to responsible

thinking, decision making and the development of

relationships and communities within and across

contexts, cultures, channels and media. Moreover, ethical communication enhances human worth and

` The Source encodes a message, then transmits thismessage through a channel where it is decoded bythe receiver. Source- the originator of a thought or an emotion. Encode- Translating ideas, feelings and thoughts into a code

Decoding- When words or unspoken signals are interpreted by thereceiver

Receiver- the person who decodes the message and attempts tomake sense of it

Message- The written, spoken and unspoken elements ofcommunication to which we assign meaning

Channel- the pathway by which the message is sent to the receiver

` There is always interference during these interactions. This is referred to as noise.

  • 8/3/2019 Com110-_Ch._1 (1)

    22/36

` This model is the same as the Communication-as-

action model, except it adds two new elements.

These elements are feedback and context. F

eedback is the response to a message Context is the physical, historical, and psychological

    communication environment.

    24/36

` This model acknowledges that when we

communication with another person, we are

constantly reacting to what the other person is

    saying or expressing.

  • 8/3/2019 Com110-_Ch._1 (1)

    25/36

` Mediated Communication is when we use media, such as cellphones or the Internet to carry our message.

` Is this easier or harder to interpret someones message? Whydo you think so?

` 4 key differences between Mediated Communication and face-to-face communication Anonymity-You dont know exactly who you are communicating with Personal appearance- you dont have to reveal your identity Distance- You can be great distances and still communicate Time- You have more control over the timing and pacing of the

conversation. You can choose to have asynchronouscommunication(there is a delay in response) or synchronouscommunication(it occurs in real time).

  • 8/3/2019 Com110-_Ch._1 (1)

    ` How is it inescapable?

` When do we start sending and receivingmessages? Before we are even born, babies respond to sounds and

    movement.

` We spend the majority of our lives communicatingwith the outside world.(Even when minding our

own business)` One key to always remember: people judge you

by your behavior, not your intent.

  • 8/3/2019 Com110-_Ch._1 (1)

    28/36

` Once you have said it, you cant take it back.

    29/36

` Misunderstandings happen all the time.

` Wiios Challenges to communication: If communication can fail, it will

If a message can be understood in different ways, it willbe understood in just the way that does the most harm

There is always somebody who knows better than youwhat you meant by your message

The more communication there is, the more difficult it isfor communication to succeed.

Do you share his point of view?

  • 8/3/2019 Com110-_Ch._1 (1)

    30/36

` Content of a communication message- The newinformation, ideas, or suggested actions that acommunicator wishes to express; what is said

` Relationship dimension of a communication message-

The aspect of a communication message that offerscues about the emotions, attitudes, and the amount ofpower and control the speaker directs toward others;how something is said
