COME AND SEE! During this 75 th anniversary of our parish, I want to share with you a meditation on these two words given by Saint Philip the Apostle, to Nathanael. "Come and See!" (Jn1:43-50). Early in this passage Jesus invites Saint Philip to follow Him. And as a result, Philip invites Nathanael with the same exact words that Jesus used when he asks the first two apostles Andrew and Peter to follow him, Come and See! We can ask ourselves what Nathanael saw when he went and found Jesus? The passage states that he saw: "the Rabbi, the son of God, the king of Israel"(Jn1:49). But he also found someone who saw him first and admires him even though he already has a preconceived notion that nothing good can come from Nazareth. Saint Philip’s invitation to Nathanael was elaborated with two verbs, to come and to see. Basically, for Nathanael that "come" invites him to move out of his comfort zone and meet someone that was already lovingly waiting for him and he was not expected to reach. And to "see" refers to acquiring a clear understanding of the powerful truth of this person, Jesus of Nazareth, who is truth itself, and wants him to become one of his disciples. These two words that came from the mouth of Saint Philip to Nathanael have been resounding as well for seventy-five years in our parish community. These two words have been given to those ahead of us, and to each of us, every time we read the sacred scripture and at the breaking of the bread on this altar. These words have been the invitation to discover not just something but someone who is lovingly waiting to transform our life and the life of those to come. But, it is up to us to invite them in the same way that Philip did to Nathanael. What are you waiting? Come and See! Fr. Julio JUBILEE YEAR 2018 The Year of our Lord 2018 is our parish Jubilee commemorating 75 years of fulfilling our mission of Opus Christi –which is Latin for Christ’s Work.
