    Advent Dinner December 1, 2019

Serrans met to assemble the items for the 62 Christmas gift bags to be given to the Seminarians. Each Christmas bag included religious: blank note cards, thank you cards, Christmas cards, stamps and $35 Walmart gift cards. The team set up assembly lines and organized the items being placed into the golden bags. Everyone had a great time, laughing and sharing the Christmas spirit.

Then Serrans delivered the Christmas gift bags to the seminarians at St. Mary’s. They were very excited and thankful for our expression of appreciation for them. Jim Craig, from Corpus Christi, is in his 1st year of Theology at St. Mary’s and he entertained the group by playing the piano. We stayed and joined them for lunch.

Ann Zdansky Ann and her husband, John Zdansky, have been parishioners at Christ the Good Shepherd since 1993 and 1990, respectively. They were married at CGS on January 11, 1997 during the 5:30 pm Saturday mass. They felt that since a marriage was one of the sacraments, that it should be shared with their community, just like a baptism, confirmation, funeral, etc.

In addition to being faithful Serrans, Ann and John are very active with CGS’ Shepherd’s Garden. The garden, located across the street from the church, raises vegetables that are distributed to various sister parishes and food panties in the Houston area. Ann and John are primarily involved in the mowing of the garden and cultivating the compost silos. The garden is almost fertilizer and pesticide free, except for the occasional ant poison to kill the pesky fire ants. The compost silos generate the nutrient rich soil that is tilled into the beds. The September 2018—August 2019 crop season generated 7,279 pounds of vegetables:

    Tomatoes 1,623 Onions 913 Peppers 745 Sweet potatoes 680 Cucumbers 566

Plus beans, beets, broccoli, black-eyed peas, cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, eggplant, lettuce, spinach, kale, okra, yellow squash, turnips and zucchini. The garden operates all year long. In the photo above, Ann is standing in front of the 7 foot tall okra plants. The photo of the various vegetables above was the result of one day’s harvest. Ann has been the Newsletter V.P. for our club since June 2018. They have one child, Shannon Reed (married to Devin Reed, who are also parishioners at CGS), 3 grandchildren (Jessica, Daniel and Carissa), and 3 great grandchildren (Jaylah, Daniel and Mackenzie).

Also, my special thanks to Father Richard McNeillie, Director of Vocations St. Mary’s Seminary Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston, for sharing his vision of how he is going to build on the rich tradition and past success of St. Mary’s. A few fun facts about St. Mary’s - did you know?

    • St. Mary’s opened in 1901 in Laporte and moved to its current location at 9845 Memorial Drive in 1954, with a November 4, 1954 dedication ceremony

    • St. Mary’s Seminary counts 18 Bishops as graduates, including Bishop Brendan Cahill, previously a parochial vicar at Christ the Good Shepherd and Rector at St. Mary’s. Other famous rectors included Msgr. Chester Borski and Father Trung Nguyen

    • Highest enrollment was 132 seminarians in 1958

    • The 12 birds in the mosaic dome of the Chapel signify the 12 Apostles and the 12 tribes of Israel in the Old Testament If you haven’t had a chance to visit St. Mary’s I encourage you to stop by --- it is one of the crown jewels of our Great City!!! As you know we showcase one of our Board members in the Board Members Corner of our Monthly Newsletters. This month we featured Ann Zdansky VP of our monthly Newsletter and our Foundation representative. Ann does a great job with our Newsletter and received the award for the top Newsletter in District 10 at the Serra USA Rally in Ventura, Ca. in January 2019. I hope to see all of you at our next Program meeting on February 26

    th with guest speaker Sister

Miriam MacLean RSM, Phd, MSW!!! In addition to having a great speaker we will be raffling off two Serra Club Polo Shirts during the 50/50 portion of our program and unveiling some more details about our 3X Visibility Campaign. With the end of the second decade of the 21

st Century in the rearview mirror we are now in the year

of perfect vision: 2020. We (the most powerful word in the English language) accomplished a lot together in 2019 and will continue to do great work together as We forge ahead. Luke 10:2 – The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field. I look forward to hearing from you. Upcoming Events—June 1 - 14, 2020 Pilgrimage of Austria - Italy and Oberammergau

Dear friends, The 2020 pilgrimage to the Holy Land and the Passion Play in Oberammergau was received with an overwhelming response. In fact, not only did the pilgrimage sell out within an hour, Fr. James and I added another bus bringing the total number of pilgrims to 108! You may know, that the Passion Play is done in Oberammergau every 10 years to fulfill a promise made by the villagers in 1633 that if God spared them from the disastrous plague, they would stage a play every ten years devoted to the life and crucifixion of Jesus Christ forever. The villagers kept their promise and staged the first Passion Play at Pentecost in 1634 on the graves of their fellow men and women who fell victim to the merciless plague. The Passion Play continues to be a massive stage production held in Oberammergau that brings to life Jesus’ Passion, covering the time frame from his visit to Jerusalem to his crucifixion, and tells the story of his suffering, death, and resurrection. The play was written based on manuscripts dating back to the 15th and 16th centuries, though the script has been modified and revised over the years. Mr. Chris Bearer, the Director of Music here at St. Ignatius of Loyola, put together a pilgrimage for members of the choir and their families to sing in the magnificent Cathedrals and Churches in Salzburg, Vienna, Lugano, and Milano. In speaking with the tour company, we recognized the number of people that want to attend the Passion Play in Oberammergau and were not able to because of the limited space available and timing for the Holy Land and Oberammergau pilgrimage in August 2020. Therefore, I and Chris are happy to announce that we are including the Passion Play as an additional add on to the June Choir 2020 Pilgrimage. You do NOT have to be a member of the choir in order to join the pilgrimage. Other activities and free in these marvelous European Cities will be made available while the choirs are rehearsing. It’s a marvelous way for your soul to rise up and glorify God as you participate in Holy Mass in these historical cathedrals and churches. As we journey we will learn about the sacred legacy of the Catholic Church throughout Europe. The Passion Play happens only every 10 years. Is this your opportunity to be part of a legacy that is 386 years old and counting? CLICK HERE for the brochure that describes the pilgrimage and Passion Play addition in detail. Please pass this email on to the members of your ministry and/or organization. Oremus pro invicem, Fr. Norbert Very Rev. Norbert Maduzia, Jr., E.V., D. Min.
