We are delivering Australia’s most modern public and active transport – and later this month the New Farm Park ferry terminal comes back online. As well as doubling the docking capacity, the upgrade has improved accessibility for all patrons. More information on this important project and others inside this edition of Living in Brisbane.

Brisbane City Council’s zipline experience at Mt Coot-tha is one step closer to taking shape, with detailed designs for the project unveiled following the lodgement of the project’s development application. The zipline will be the first of its kind in Brisbane, with three signature experiences of the Mt Coot-tha forest taking in the best views of the CBD and Moreton Bay.

Council is committed to creating more to see and do in our city, both for residents and visitors to Brisbane, and the Mt Coot-tha zipline will provide an exciting adventure experience located just minutes from Brisbane’s CBD.

Graham Quirk Lord Mayor

Australia Day nominations openDo you know someone who makes a valuable contribution to Brisbane, helps improve the lives of others or makes the city a better place? You can now nominate them for a 2019 Lord Mayor’s Australia Day Award.

Categories include Citizen of the Year, Senior Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year, Corporate Citizen of the Year, Community Event of the Year, Australia Day Cultural/Arts Award, Australia Day Sports Award, Green Heart Award (individual and organisation) and Australia Day Achievement Awards.

The awards recognise our unsung heroes and pay tribute to the special people in our community who go above and beyond to help others and contribute to the city’s vision of a diverse, friendly and strong community.

Visit our website to nominate someone you think is deserving.

Say thanks to our grandparentsNational Grandparents Day, on Sunday 28 October, honours grandparents and seniors for the support they give to our families and the local community. The special day offers an opportunity to spend time with older loved ones and connect across generations.

Get involved by joining in the many free and low-cost activities held by Council. From giant games in Camp Hill and community markets in Bardon to local music group Brisbane Brass showcasing the talent of musicians aged eight to 80 in Shorncliffe, there’s something for all ages to enjoy together.

A blueprint for our futureBrisbane’s Future Blueprint is already helping to ensure our friendly and liveable city will thrive for years to come.

Developed with input from more than 100,000 residents across every suburb in Brisbane, the plan’s eight key principles help Council to guide decisions about the city’s future growth and balance local priorities.

So far, Brisbane’s Future Blueprint has helped to permanently protect some of the city’s most iconic sightlines from future development, opened the Moggill District Sports Park, and facilitated X Cargo – an open-air entertainment precinct.

Work has also started to improve local retail villages, as part of the plan’s commitment to creating a city of neighbourhoods. Planning and design is already underway for upgrades to local precincts in Gaythorne, Aspley, Jindalee, Wavell Heights and Inala.

Celebrating our wonderful carers City Hall is hosting the exhibition Why Do I Care? as part of National Carers Week, from 12-22 October. The exhibition showcases photos and written compositions submitted by carers to raise awareness of their valuable work and encourage self-identification by the many unpaid carers in our society.

Co-hosted by Carers Queensland, the exhibition explores the many reasons why one in eight Australians care for a family member or friend – including love, cultural customs or simply because they believe they are best placed to offer their loved one the best quality of life.

Carers make an enormous contribution to those they care for and our local communities. Head to the People’s Gallery, via the Adelaide Street entrance, to see the exhibition and show why you care too. Carers look after family members

New doorway to New FarmIt’s smooth sailing at New Farm Park as the ferry terminal reopens this month, with the terminal upgrade including doubling the docking capacity for passengers and improving accessibility.

Council has committed more than $70 million over four years to upgrade the city’s ferry terminal network. These upgrades ensure everyone can enjoy our CityCat and CityFerry services, including passengers with disability, their carers, seniors, passengers using mobility devices and parents with infants in prams.

The next terminal to be upgraded is Guyatt Park, St Lucia, where work begins in early 2019. New timetables are now available for CityCat, CityFerry, CityHopper and Brisbane’s brand new SpeedyCat service from translink.com.au

Countdown to the INAS Global GamesOne year from now more than 1000 athletes will converge on Brisbane for the International Federation for Athletes with Intellectual Impairments (INAS) Global Games.

Held every four years, the event brings together elite athletes with an intellectual impairment from more than 75 countries to compete for the honour of being the best in their field. For some, it’s also a pathway to the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games.

Council is a proud sponsor of the INAS Global Games, which includes athletics, swimming, table tennis, rowing, basketball, futsal, tennis, taekwondo and cycling, and showcases our inclusive city with more to see and do.

In celebration of Brisbane hosting this world class event, and to mark the one-year-to-go milestone, Council has wrapped a CityCat in the INAS Global Games theme.

Howard Smith Wharves one step closerThree new restaurants at Howard Smith Wharves will throw open their doors soon, marking a major and exciting milestone in the revitalisation project.

Council has worked closely with the lessee to transform the site into a world-class riverfront destination featuring public parkland, riverside dining and a mix of vibrant entertainment and cultural experiences. New public open spaces, including an outdoor amphitheatre, will host events year-round.

Two lifts, one at Bowen Terrace and one at Wilson Outlook Reserve, will give pedestrians at the top of the cliffs direct access to the parkland area, which covers 80% of the riverfront precinct. Once complete, Howard Smith Wharves will be a unique leisure destination, enhancing Brisbane’s status as a New World City.

Find your treasure on the Garage Sale Trail They say one person’s trash is another’s treasure, and what better way to help keep Brisbane clean, green and sustainable than getting on board for the Garage Sale Trail?

Australia’s biggest reuse community event is on Saturday 20 and Sunday 21 October.

Whether you register your own garage sale on the trail or head out to snap up a bargain, remember that buying second-hand is an easy way to shop more sustainably, divert preloved items with more life to give from landfill and support a greener Brisbane. You’ll find everything from clothes, books and toys to furniture and homewares.

COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT

Saving the environment one stitch at a timeThe ban on single-use plastic bags may be new, but Boomerang Bags has been helping to generate conversation around plastic waste for five years.

The not-for-profit community grassroots movement is made up of 750 volunteer groups around the world, including around 20 in Brisbane, who create bags from reusable materials.

“Boomerang Bags was started as a reaction to plastic bag litter along the beach,” explains Rachel Long, coordinator of Boomerang Bags Nundah.

“It’s also about diverting fabric from landfill, so it’s multi-pronged in its benefits to saving the environment. It’s about reducing litter to save animals’ lives and creating partnerships between residents, businesses and communities.”

100th anniversary for Mt Gravatt CemeteryTo commemorate the 100th anniversary of Mt Gravatt Cemetery, visitors can explore the cemetery like never before on Saturday 13 October from 10am-4pm.

Located within 197 acres of native bushland alongside the Toohey State Forest, the cemetery first opened in July 1918.

Brisbane Open House bus tours will run at 11am and 1pm, while ‘Back of House’ tours start at 11am and 2pm. There will be a pop-up cafe to indulge in drinks and treats, and kids can test their knowledge in a history hunt to win special prizes, or pick up lucky dip prizes.

Visitors can also explore their family history at the on-site mobile library.

One of the theories about Jack the Ripper is that he is buried in Toowong Cemetery. Walter Thomas Porriott, buried in 1952, is one of the many suspects in the debate about the true identity of London’s Whitechapel serial killer. Porriott was a convicted killer who lived in London before moving to Australia. But Ripper enthusiasts and historians are divided about Porriott’s guilt.
