NTMA-AMT General Assembly: The Year Ahead – AMT GlobalManufacturing Technology Forecast

MONDAY, OCTOBER 6

8:00 a.m. - NoonPresenter: Paul Zane Pilzer, Author

Today we appear to be coming to grips with a reality that has unpinned economics since the science was created – wealth is determined by the supply of land, labor, and materials; and the world has a limited amount of thesephysical resources. As gas climbs to five dollars per gallon, milk pricesdouble, skilled machinists are impossible to find, the American busi-nessman could look at the landscape and begin to wonder how hecan compete “without.” Without petroleum products, without skilledlabor, without transportation, how do I compete?

A hundred years ago this may have created a problem but not today. Today, our greatest resource is technology. Today, tech-nology has become and will continue to be the single largestsource of wealth production in our history. Technology will be tothe future what land was in medieval times, trains in the 1800s oroil in the 1900s.

Our Keynote speaker is Paul Zane Pilzer, a world-renowned econo-mist, a multimillionaire software entrepreneur, an adjunct profes-sor, and the author of eight best-selling books and dozens ofscholarly publications. Mr. Pilzer will share with us that business-men who behave as if they were operating in the old zero-sum worldwill be eclipsed by their competitors who recognize the changesin technology and their impact on markets for what they are. Mr.Pilzer will revisit the tenets he developed in his book, Unlimited Wealth, and augment those insights with his current work to update andbring those ideas forward to 2008.

Presenter: John Walker, Chairman, Oxford Economics

A keen eye to the future and anticipating businessopportunities are critical to achieving success andmaintaining profitability in these uncertain times.John Walker, Chairman of Oxford Economics, will besharing his Global Forecast for ManufacturingTechnology for the first time at this conference inour effort to assist you in both pursuits. John Walker’s look overthe horizon when he presents his forecast is the linchpin to an information-intensive day at the meeting. His forecast on the future health of the auto, construction equipment, aerospace, medical equipment, appliance, engineered products and electronics industries, globally, will be a valuable take-awayfor anyone attending this conference.

Presentation Highlights

Presenter: Dr. Charles Evans, President, Chicago Federal Reserve

In the era between World War II and 1980, the sheersize of the U.S. economy created backwater mar-kets which provided the small U.S. manufacturerabundant bookings and expansion opportunities. However, to globalize after 1980, U.S.-based OEMsand major manufacturing companies exported sig-nificant elements of those niche areas to foreignfacilities. Small manufacturers providing components and produc-tion technology to the remaining industrial base in the United Statesstill had a large pool of opportunities, although they no longerseemed as unlimited as during the post war period. Today outsidersare invading those pools of opportunity. The outsiders are foreigncompetitors that have never had the support of a 400-mile-widedomestic market, and they have always had to export to compete. This is an advantage that most of our small manufacturers were notprepared to compete against, and the impact was devastating inthe years between 1998 and 2005.

Charles Evans will share with our audience how the landscape haschanged in mid-America manufacturing markets, globalization’simpact, and what the environment is likely to look like in the fu-ture for trade and competition. Globalization has now found its wayinto the backwaters and inlets of the American manufacturingeconomy, and no one is immune to foreign competition. Dr. Evanswill paint a landscape for the future of the manufacturingsector’s markets in the United States stressing theneed for small U.S. manufacturers to not only lookat their customers and local competition, butalso to develop processes to track foreigncompetition and changes in manufac-turing processes. No one can anylonger afford to let business orchanges in processes to come tothem – you have to engage.

Title: Future Technology Needsof Precision Manufacturers

U.S. manufacturing is undergoing fundamentalchanges in response to global economic forces. Toremain competitive and promote growth, manufacturers must adaptto new challenges and rapidly changing market demands. These busi-ness conditions necessitate shorter innovation cycles, more flexibleand rapidly reconfigurable manufacturing systems, integrated andstreamlined communications and supply chains, reduced environmentalimpacts, and improved energy efficiencies.

Four NTMA member companies will participate in a technology paneldiscussion, moderated by John Byrd. Offering their vision and experiences, a number of advanced manufacturing systems’ needs willbe presented and discussed with the audience and AMT members. Thesemanufacturing requirements will lead to creating processes that areaccurate, agile, automated, flexible, intelligent, inter-operable, reconfigurable, and sustainable.

The resulting dialog on future technology needs of the precision custom manufacturer will aid member companies in their quest tocompete globally and help shape a new, brighter future for U.S. manufacturers.
