THE LORD DELIGHTS IN YOU

The following is an excerpt a homily of Fr. Jarrod’s from January of 2016. The recording can be found at www.stfranciswichita.com (click “Online Homilies”).

Do you think God delights in you personally? Or do you think he sees you sort of as this troubled child who just needs to be forgiven? When I was in high school, I did a lot of art. Among the many things I drew at Bishop Carroll was the yearbook cover for ’90 or ’91. And I had a girlfriend in high school. I remember I had drawn her portrait and I gave it to her. You can imagine what that could mean to a young woman, that I spent hours looking at a picture and recreating that picture, just delighting in that relationship.

Well, years went by, and my love was given to the Lord in a much more profound way. He’s the one who captured my heart completely. In the seminary, I had a 30-day silent retreat and, on that retreat, I did with the Lord what I had done with the high school girlfriend and I spent 30 days just looking at the Lord’s face. I did this by having a book called 101 Portraits of Jesus. I flipped through 101 pages, and I looked at each face of Jesus, and I took the characteristics of what most resembled what I had in mind of the Lord. And I was able to produce an image that fits what I see Jesus as for myself. But if you yourself are an artist you know that crux of the picture, the face, is the eyes and the bridge of the nose. What I realized after 30 days is that it wasn’t me looking at Jesus for 30 days--it was him looking at me. He was sketching my face in his own heart. What I had done for 30 days, he had already done for eternity. He already knew what I was going to look like even before the world began. So much does the Lord delight in you that he knows everything about you. There is not a detail that he himself did not put into place. Having sketched you, he brought you to life so that he can simply look at you and love you.

When the rich young man came to Jesus to have a moral conversation, the first thing Jesus did, according to Scripture, is looked at him and loved him. When the woman was caught in adultery and was condemned by all those Pharisees, Jesus looked at her and said, “I don’t condemn you.”

The Lord delights in you personally. You are lovely to the Lord. The book of Isaiah says “You are precious in my eyes and I love you.” The Psalms speak of the great glory that God wants to bestow on you. He wants to dote on you like a husband doting on his wife. That’s why that book of Isaiah ends by saying, “As a bridegroom rejoices in his bride, so does your God rejoice in you.”

The love of a young married man toward his wife--he wants to give his wife everything. Give her jewels, and perfume, and clothes . . . The book of Ephesians says that Jesus is like a bridegroom loving his bride and makes her spotless and pure and all beautiful. This is what the Lord does with each one of our souls. He loves us and he dotes on us by giving us all sorts of gifts. The Scriptures talk about how he gives us the gift of wisdom, and the gift of faith, the gift of knowledge and of prophecy, the gift even to do healing and miracles. Each of those gifts is like so many gems and jewels and diamonds that he bestows on us simply because he loves us.

We all grew up hearing about the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit. These are the real crown jewels. Wisdom, prudence, understanding, knowledge, and fortitude, and piety, and fear of the Lord. Those seven things are like so many bouquets of flowers that he bestows upon us. And we’ve heard before too in our lives about the fruits of the Holy Spirit. Like perfume he gives us these twelve fruits to endow us with. Charity and joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, faithfulness, modesty, chastity, long-suffering, self-control. Those twelve fruits he endows upon you so that you can be beautiful and life-giving to other people. He doesn’t give us gold and jewels; he gives us gifts of the Spirit so that we can know that we are doted on by one who loves us--one who delights in you.

The beginning and the end of this homily is simply this: The Lord delights in you. He looks at you. He knows every detail of your heart, mind, and soul. As a bridegroom rejoices in a bride, so does your God rejoice in you.

-Fr. Jarrod Lies

ADORERS NEEDED FOR PERPETUAL ADORATION AT ST. FRANCIS

We hope to reopen adoration at St. Francis in the coming weeks (with appropriate social distancing requirements in place). However, due to health concerns, some adorers are not able to fulfill their perpetual adoration hours. We are currently looking for volunteers to fill these gaps. Once these time slots are filled, we will be able to reopen perpetual adoration. If you are interested and willing to commit to one of these time slots for adoration, please contact Travis Pearson at [email protected]. Please consider this a permanent or semi-permanent commitment.

OPERATIONS COUNCIL

Our fiscal year has been completed as of June 30, 2020. As we begin a new financial year as a parish, the Operations Council has approved a new budget.

For the new year beginning July 1, our weekly operating budget for the parish is $99,000. We have also included $4,000 a week for our facilities/Building Fund. This total budget of $103,000 per week or $ 5,356,000 is a 6.5% de-crease from the year ending 6-30-2020.

The school budget has also decreased by 6.5%. These are uncertain days. We believe this budget will allow us to carry out our mission for the upcoming year.

CATHOLIC Q&A: GENUFLECTION

Question: Why do Catholics genuflect?

Answer: Genuflection is an act of devotion that literally means “to bend the knee.” For many Catholics, it’s an almost automatic gesture that we perform before entering our pew or row of seats at Mass. But, like many of the symbols and gestures of our faith tradition, genuflecting can also be an invitation for deeper reflection. The practice of “bending the knee” is an ancient way of recognizing the presence of someone greater than we are. It has been said that the practice dates back to the time of Alexander the Great, but it became a common part of etiquette in the

royal courts of the Middle Ages. From throne rooms and palaces, it was a small step to genuflecting becoming part of the devotional lives of Christians, who used this secular gesture as a way of recognizing the presence of the One who is King of Kings, especially in the Eucharist.

Today, Catholics are asked to genuflect in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament (whether in the tabernacle or exposed on the altar during eucharistic adoration). So, while it has become second nature to genuflect before entering your seat in church, we should pay attention to where the Blessed Sacrament is kept in each church or chapel that we visit, and genuflect in the direction of the tabernacle where the Blessed Sacrament is kept. In churches or chapels in which the tabernacle is in a separate space, we are invited to simply bow toward the altar.

In addition to genuflecting before the Blessed Sacrament, we are also instructed to genuflect before the cross used for veneration on Good Friday (during the solemn celebrations of the Lord’s Passion) and any time a relic of the True Cross is displayed for veneration. This long-standing tradition is a way of honoring the cross as the great sign of our salvation and of showing devotion to the passion of Jesus. ©LPi
