!1. Rules of the game

Dodge ball is played in two teams. Each team consists of ten players.

The game is played with a volleyball or foamball.

The official game is played on a volley ball field (9 – 18 m). Depending of the age of the children, we adapt the dimension of the field (4,5 – 9m). The field is divided in two playing halves with each an outer field around it.

!A game continues until all the lives of a team are used.

At the start of the game there are nine players in the playing field and one player in the outer field (= the captain).

!Each player has one life. The captain has three lives. You can win back your life by hitting an opponent from the outer field.

The game starts with the player in the outer field of the team which has won the toss.

The aim is to hit the opponent with the ball on any body part. The head also counts as a hit.A player is hit when the ball falls to the ground after hitting the body. The ball must come directly from the opponent. This doesn’t mean through a bouncing ball. If the ball hits two players of the same team after each other and then falls to the ground, only the first player loses his life.

A player, who has been hit, goes to the outer field with the ball. There he can try to hit someone from the opponent party. If he succeeds, he can rejoin his own zone.

You can move freely with the ball in your hands when in possession of the ball. Within the three seconds you have to try and hit the opponent or pass the ball to a fellow team player.

If a field player runs outside the lines, this player will be considered as hit. If the ball rolls outside the lines, the ball goes to the players in the outer field.

A player may only take the ball if this is in his zone.

When there are only two players left on the field, the captain can joint hem.

!2. Glossary

LivesEach player has one life, the captain has three lives.

Playing field Because we play the game with kids, we have reduced the official dimensions (9m on 18m) to 4,5m on 9m. This is the dimension of the playing field, without the outer fields.

Outer field This is the zone around the playing field. In the game ‘between two fires’ these are only the zones behind the field. In the game ‘dodge ball’ these are the zones behind AND beside the field.

We use a zone of two meter large, around the playing field.

TossTo toss is a way to indicate in all honesty the team who can start the game. It’s based on coincidence, so there’s no room for discussion.

The way of tossing we use, is: Two random players (one from each team) stand back to back in the middle of the field. De leader of the game throws a ball in the air between both of them. The players try to hit the ball away to their own team to catch it.

!Bouncing ball

A bouncing ball is a ball who first hits the ground before touching a part of the body of a person. This person is considered not hit.
