1. Introduction

This Comenius Project, SARAH is the second Project from Zespół Szkół Nr 3 im. rtm.

Witolda Pileckiego in Zabrze has joined so far. After a long preparation and waiting

for our guests we could finally start our meeting in Zabrze. Thus we were very excited

and made all the arrangements with great enthusiasm. All the students, parents and

teachers involved in the project were very busy, also excited and looked forward to

this week.

2. Participants from partner countries and from Zabrze

We were happy to welcome participants from all our partner countries. It wasn’t difficult for coordinator to find 19 families that were able to host students from other countries, because polish students and their parents are very hospitable and it was a pleasure for them to guest students from Austria, France, Italy,. Finally we could host 20 students in 19 families from our partner countries. Together with the teachers the total number of guests coming to Zabrze was 31. Participating teachers: 11 from 8 partner countries and 14 from Poland

Sunday, May 17th 2015

Spain arrived at the airport in Kraków on the 16th of May. The other partners with

their students arrived on Sunday (the 18th of May) between 9 am and 12 pm either

by train from Graz to Katowice or by plane at the airport Katowice- Pyrzowice or

Kraków- Balice. All the participants from eight different countries were welcomed

and picked up by the coordinator Angelika Jochemczyk in Katowice and Kraków.

When our guests reached to Zabrze, all the host students and their families met them

with the coordinator Angelika Jochemczyk. The guest students were taken to the

houses by host students and the teachers were brought to the hotel “Ambasador”

which is located in the centre of Zabrze near the school, where they would stay for

five nights.

Monday, May 18th 2015

7:45- 8:00 Walk to school

All the teachers in company of the coordinator Angelika Jochemczyk walked to the school. The students came to school at 7.30 am and they had the chance of meeting the other students and visiting the classrooms in our school.

08:00 – 10:00 Meeting at school with the headmistress and school members; presentation of the student’s activities

The opening was held at the banquet hall of the Zespół Szkół nr 3 in Zabrze. Angelika Jochemczyk, the Polish coordinator, the headmistress of the school, Grażyna Kossowska and the member of the student Milena Waniek, welcomed the guests from partner countries and presented the activities for the day.

The headmistress gave a speech about the history of our school and patron and she emphasized that it was honor for us to could take a part of Project SARAH and host guests from eight different countries. After welcoming all the teachers and students, Francisco Luque Ruiz, the main coordinator of the Project SARAH gave a short speech in Polish language explaining the aim of the Project and his feelings.

The students from Austria, France, Italy, Romania, Spain, Sweden, Turkey, UK and

Poland presented their work.

The presentations were very interesting, all students were paying attention.

10:00- 10:30 Coffee break at school Between 10:00- 10:30 there was a short coffee break in banquet hall of the school.

10:30- 11:15 Physics lesson from Marek Matlok Physics teacher Marek Matlok and their students invited us for a very interesting

lesson, which was attended not only by the students but also by our guests. During

this lesson we had the opportunity to know interesting physical experiments, that

they are part of our everyday life.

11:30- 12:30 Sundial opening ceremony

At 11:30 all the students, teachers and invited guests including the President of the City Zabrze Małgorzata Maoka- Szulik and other city government members, went to the site behind of school, where was placed the sundial.

12:30- 13:30 Lunch at school Between 12:30 – 13:30 we ate together a traditional Polish dinner in banquet hall of the school.

14:00- 15:00 Lecture at Silesian Center of Heart Diseases – teachers /

Art classes at school- students After the lunch break all the teachers were picked up and taken to the Silesian Center of Heart Diseases, where they listened a lecture about the combination of the foremost clinical program and powerful research work, which is made by the Silesian Center for Heart Diseases.

The Silesian Center for Heart Diseases in Zabrze is a modern, highly specialized heart

center, recognized nationwide and internationally for its outstanding clinical and

scientific achievements in cardiology and cardiothoracic surgery.

The Center offers the broadest possible spectrum of diagnostics, therapeutic and

surgical treatment options for both congenital and aquired heart diseases. Patients

presenting symptoms of acute coronary sydromes are treated immediately by well

trained and experienced cardiologists ready to perform any kind of percutaneous

intervention twenty four hours a day, seven days a week. In case of any difficulties

cardiac surgeons are always on standby, prepared to take over.

Silesian Center is also known for its exceptional chronic heart failure program. It has

been over 30 years since the first successful heart transplantation was carried out in

Zabrze. Since then, more than 50 are performed every year, placing the Center in the

leading position among other centers across Europe. Based on the excellent

outcomes and experience in heart transplantation is the Center`s lung transplant

program. Despite its recent beginnings, offers severely ill patients with chronic lung

disease a hope they have been waiting for.

While the teachers took part in the lecture, all the students had a painting workshop in art class with an art teacher Małgorzata Marzec. After that, they visited the classes.

15:15- 17:30 Guided city tour Between 15:15- 17:30 we made a city tour with a guide. First we visited the the Jewish cemetery, the Steel House, Donnersmarck’s Housing Estate, then the Church of St Joseph and Football stadium of Górnik Zabrze.

1. The Jewish cemetery in Zabrze (Cmentarna Street)

The Jewish cemetery in Zabrze (Cmentarna Street) was set up in 1871. The plot was a gift from the town’s last private owner, Guido Heckel von Donnersmarck, to the Jewish community of Zabrze. The plot – of the area of 1 morgen – was located in the then suburbs of the town, on the territory of the former 18th-century castle colony. Several months after the establishment of the cemetery, a funeral house was built next to it, which cost 850 thalers. It was the seat of the Chevra Kadisha (Burial Society). In 1892 Max Böhm financed the extension of the funeral house, where apartments for the cemetery’s caretaker and gardener were built. Between 1894 and 1995 the surface of the cemetery was extended to the length of the neighboring evangelical cemetery. The dates on the tombstones corroborate this information. During the next years, the subsequent lots were purchased for the cemetery needs. Last burials took place there in 1954.

A visitor to the cemetery can also admire a beautiful stand of trees, consisting of more than 200 trees. It is mainly composed of robinias, then tall European ash trees, maples, sycamores and others. The oldest trees are three London Planetrees, which were planted over 120 years ago. The scenery is complemented by the common ivy.

Since 1989 the cemetery has been under the supervision of the Social Committee of Care over the Jewish Cemetery in Zabrze.

2. The Steel House

One of the most interesting monuments in Zabrze is the house at 7 Cmentarna Street.

This is an experimental building erected in 1927. Built on typical foundations, it has

walls made of steel. It is currently the best example of this type of architecture that is

represented in several other buildings, jokingly called "cans". These were

prefabricated buildings, which were erected in less than a month.

3. Donnersmarck Housing Estate

Undoubtedly the most picturesque corner of downtown Zabrze is the tree-

lined Donnersmarck workers' colony, composed of over 40 strikingly handsome multi-

family dwellings unique for their traditional timber framing and Prussian decorative

details. Built between 1903 and 1922 for the workers of the

nearby Donnersmarck steelworks, if you have some time to kill in Zabrze a walk

through the area is highly recommended, particularly Krakusa street where you'll find

the largest trees. Of note in the area is the Jewish Cemetery on ul. Cmentarna (S-2)

and the bizarre Steel House (Stalowy Dom) nearby at ul. Cmentarna 7d. A truly

experimental structure, this two-storey building designed to house four families was

completed in 26 days in 1927 when eight massive steel walls cast at the

neighbouring Donnersmarck Steelworks were welded together to create a crude

facade that no paint job would ever adhere to for more than a year before peeling. A

quintessential Zabrze roadside curiosity.

4. The Church of St Joseph

The Church of St Joseph in Zabrze was built in 1930-1931. It is one of the most avant-

garde and beautiful Modernist buildings in Silesia. It was designed by Dominikus

Boehm, a world-class architect. The massive, brick block with a tower in the shape of

a cuboid, multi-storey arcades in front of the entrance, rough, subtly lit interior, many

hidden symbolic elements. These features make the church stand out from other

sacred buildings in Zabrze.

18:00 – 22:00 Dinner in “Biesiadowo” for students/ dinner with city government, headmistress and other school members in Willa Ambasador for teachers

All the teachers had an entertaining evening with city government, headmistress and other school members in Willa Ambasador with traditional Polish specialties. The students had a dinner in pizzeria “Biesiadowo”.

Tuesday, May 19th 2015 8:15 Departure for Silesian Planetarium in Chorzów

At 7:45 all participants met in front of the school and set up for trip to Chorzów, where we had to attend a lecture in Silesian Planetarium.

The biggest and the oldest planetarium in Poland was founded in 1955 to commemorate a great astronomer - Nicolaus Copernicus. It is provided with Zeiss projection apparatus, placed under the 23 metres dome - the screen of the artificial sky. Almost 400 spectators can watch the programme at the same time. The planetarium sky is an exact picture of the real firmament under which different lectures take place. Most of them deal with geography, astronomy but musical shows can be attended there as well. The telescope with 30 cm objective situated in the Astronomical Observatory enables astronomers who work in the Planetarium to follow planetoids and comets. On fine days, visitors can observe the Sun, and after the sunset - admire the most interesting night objects, even with magnification of 750 times. Time is measured by the big sun-dial which is situated in the planetarium yard. The meteorological and seismologic stations are on regular duty. Due to their standard equipment it is possible to run attractive lessons for students. The exhibition placed in the ring surrounding the dome is worth seeing when you visit the Planetarium. In the video room decorated with the portraits of Polish astronomers, visitors can meet an astronomer and discuss current astronomical events..

9:00- 10:30 Lecture in Silesian Planetarium

Exactly at 9:00 began the show and we could see a picture of the real firmament.

We admired the sky from dawn to dusk in Silesia. Then we could see the meteorological and seismologic stations and the sundial.

11:00- 12:00 Lunch at school

After visiting Planetarium we drove back to the school by bus. Lunch was waiting for us, so after eating it we took a walk to the nearby coal mine “Guido”. 12:30- 15:30 Visiting Zabrze’s Historic Coal Mine „Guido” ( level 170 and

320 ) in three groups We had to divide all participants into three groups and the guide informed us about safety and maintaining underground. After that through the pit shaft we

went down the to the levels of 170 and 320 meters. We had the opportunity to go the whole deepest tourists route in a coal mine in Europe. We saw the place where not only miners but also horses worked and the most deeply located post office in

Europe. It was an amazing experience not only for students but also for teachers.

The unique in Europe, established in 1855, mine, which after the completion of exploitation served as a drainage point and an experimental mine. Apart from visiting opportunities, the mine provides artistic sensations. Its flagship products include, among others, Music on the Level and Theatre on the Level - periodically held artistic events benefiting from the exceptional atmosphere of the underground chambers. At the level 320 there is also the most deeply located post office. This historic mine has been in existence for 155 years. Animals lived for many years in specially arranged underground stables at the level of 170 and 320 m. The total length of all underground excavations, both vertical and horizontal, amounts to nearly 3000 meters. The name of the mine - “Guido” - derives from the great industrialist, millionaire and advisor of the king of Prussia, prince Guido Henkel von Donnersmarck. In the mine there is the most deeply located post office in Europe, and maybe even in the world.

The students shared the evening with the host families. The teachers went to their hotel to have a short rest.

15:30 Back home and evening with the host family – students/ back to

the hotel – teachers Students had time to relax , to visit some more sight of Zabrze, to go shopping and to spend a time with the host families. Teachers had time to prepare for the visit in Jasna Góra Monastery.

16:30 Departure to Częstochowa

At 16:30 all the teachers with the headmistress Grażyna Kossowska, vice- headmistress Agnieszka Bylica, Angelika Jochemczyk and Piotr Szczygielski set up for Częstochowa and arrived in restaurant “Pod Ratuszem” about 18:00.

19:30- 21:30 Visiting Jasna Góra Monastery and The Black Madonna

After a dinner in restaurant we went to Jasna Góra Monastery, where we could visit the third- largest Catholic pilgrimage site in the world. The culminating point was to participate in Jasnogórski Appeal at 21:00 and see the icon of Our Lady of Częstochowa. It was an unforgettable experience for our guests.

The Monastery of Jasna Góra in Częstochowa, Poland, is the third-largest Catholic pilgrimage site in the world. Home to the beloved miraculous icon of Our Lady of Częstochowa, the monastery is also the national shrine of Poland and the center of Polish Catholicism. The site is one of Poland's official national Historic Monuments, as designated September 16, 1994 and tracked by the National Heritage Board of Poland.

After visiting Jasna Góra Monastery we drove back to the hotel by bus.

Wednesday, May 20th 2015 8:30 Departure to Kraków

All the teachers, guest and host students set up for Kraków and arrived in Kraków at about 9.30. The guide was waiting for us.

10:00- 14:00 Guided city tour We started the city tour from sightseeing and walking in Wawel Castle and the Dragon’s Den.

People lived on the Wawel Hill at least as early as fifty thousand years ago, in the Paleolithic Age. In the Neolithic and the Bronze Age, i.e. some three thousand years ago, the settlement was apparently bustling with trade, with assorted crafts and with farming. It was at the turn of the past millennium when the rulers of Poland took up their residence here. During the early 16th century King Sigismund I the Old (1506-1548) brought in the best native and foreign artists (Italian architects and sculptors, German decorators, etc.) to create the splendid Renaissance palace-cum-castle which survived, little changed, till now. It proved to be a paragon of stately residence in Central and Eastern Europe and served widely as a model throughout the region. Its magnificent arcaded courtyard of great dimensions and immaculate proportions formed the ideal setting for tournaments and various court events. They were watched by royalty, courtiers and guests from the galleries which otherwise served as the main communications between rooms. The Wawel Royal Castle has its “piano nobile” – i.e. the state apartments – on the top, third floor rather than the second

like Italian palaces. The castle’s second floor contained private apartments of the royal family, whereas the court officials worked and lived downstairs. Visitors can see many exquisite interiors of the Royal Castle complete with beautiful period furniture and world-class objects of art. Some exhibits prove absolutely unique by any standards.

2. Dragon Cave ( Dragon’s Den )

Tradition connects the beginnings of Krakow with one Prince Krak who rid his people of a dragon devouring both their stock and their virgins. For centuries a large, 200-foot-long natural cavern in the western rocky slope of the Wawel Hill above the Vistula (Wisla) river bank has been known as the monster’s den. Today the cave still attracts swarms of visitors.

In fact, the Dragon’s Lair (Polish ‘Smocza Jama’) is the area’s oldest residence, inhabited by man from the Stone Age through the 16th century.

14:00- 15:30 Time for lunch and shopping

During all this visits, a perfect guide accompanied us. Then we had lunch at around 14:00. The participants had free time to do shopping or sightseeing around.

16:00 Departure to the “Solaris”- Polish’s national synchrotron

At 16:30 we arrived at “Solaris”.

http://www.synchrotron.uj.edu.pl/en_GB/ The first Polish synchrotron radiation facility Solaris is being built at the Jagiellonian University III-rd Campus in Kraków. Synchrotron is a unique man-made source of electromagnetic radiation known as synchrotron radiation. The energy range of

emitted photons spans from the infrared to hard X-rays. The Polish synchrotron is going to be the first research infrastructure of such substantial size and potential constructed in this part of Europe. The synchrotron, being a large-scale, multi-user and multidisciplinary facility, represents a much more efficient investment in research in comparison to distributed small or medium-scale equipment by providing state-of-the-art research opportunities for many groups. Over the last three decades, synchrotron light has supported cutting-edge research in physics, chemistry and material science, and has opened up many new areas of research in fields such as medicine, geological and environmental studies, structural genomics and archeology.

16:30- 17:30 Visiting and lecture in „Solaris”

We had visited The Polish’s national synchrotron with the scientist who explained to us what synchrotron is and what is the work of scientists at the institute. After the visit we went by the bus to Zabrze.

19:00 Back home – students/ back to the hotel – teachers

The teachers went to their hotel and had a dinner. students were picked up by their parents and spent the evening with families.

Thursday, May 21st 2015 7:30 Meeting point in front of the Willa Ambasador – teachers

All the teachers were picked up for the visit in Town hall by the City President. The students with their guests arrived there in the company of teachers Mrs. Fijak and Mr. Domagalski.

8:00-9:00 Visit by the City President– teachers

At 8:00 we were invited to a reception by the City President- Mrs. Małgorzata Maoka- Szulik. Students and teachers involved in the project had a meeting with City President- Mrs. Małgorzata Maoka- Szulik in the meeting room of Zabrze City Hall. On this occasion, the City President congratulated the participants in the Comenius project and offered the teachers of the foreign delegation the books of our city. The project coordinator, Francisco Luque, appreciated the hospitality with which the participants were welcomed at their arrival in Zabrze and the cultural and scientific landmarks visited during the trips. The polish coordinator Angelika Jochemczyk gave an interview to a local TV. After welcome greetings we were invited to take a snack and have some drinks.

9:00- 12:30 Sports acitivities and dance classes at school- students

After the visit in the Town Hall the students went back in the company of teachers Mrs. Fijak and Mr. Domagalski to the school, where all the students learned to common dance “Belgijka” under the expert eye of a teacher and instructor of dance Mrs. Cwalina and Mr. Domagalski.

9:00- 10:00 Visiting Philharmonic and Theatre in Zabrze

At the same time the teachers in a company of the headmistress and polish teachers walked to the Philharmonic and Theatre in Zabrze.

The Symphony Orchestra of Zabrze Philharmonic was created in spring 1950 as the Miners' Trade Union Philharmonic Society. Initially the main goal of the newly founded Symphony Orchestra was to propagate and popularize the music - in the broad sense - among the working class of Silesian industry. Another direction in the Orchestra activity, which has Been cherished up to the present, is the series of conceptually edited concerts for children and teenagers. The Orchestra has recorded two CD albums and two documentaries for the Polish public television TVP. The Orchestra repertoire is overwhelmed with classicism and romanticism, but we also willingly take modern works, especially those of Silesian school composers. Periodically the stage performances of operettas and operas are presented. Our all-the-time repertoire consists of a few various programmes filled with popular, light, movie, musical, dixieland and jazz music. For every season the Orchestra prepares 20 symphonic programmes, 5 oratorios, several popular music sets and 10 seperate programmes in a series of concerts for children and teenagers. On average we give 12 concerts per month in Zabrze hall as well as in other concert halls over the country.

Zabrze Philharmonic consists of 60 musicians. Since 1990 Sławomir Chrzanowski is its Managing and Artistic Director.

2. Theatre in Zabrze

History Theatre - New Theatre in Zabrze was founded in 1959. Since the beginning of its existence played a prominent role culture-and education. To this day, he has prepared more than 220 premieres, including the launch of the authors Silesia. Over the 45 years of the New Theatre in Zabrze also he cooperated with many famous directors, set designers and musicians - cherishing high artistic level of the team.

10:00- 12:30 Time for shopping in the city center

After the visit the teachers had some free time in the centre of Zabrze.

12:30- 14:00 Lunch at school

At 12.30 all students and teachers went back to the school to had a lunch.

14:00- 15:30 Meeting at school, evaluation and receiving certificates

After the lunch all participants were asked to fill in the online-evaluation forms, that Nadia Circu from Romania provided for us. The certificates were given to all participants and the students left the school with host students. In the meantime the teachers had a meeting to discuss the progress of the project and discuss the last meeting in UK in about three weeks. Alistair from the UK reminded everyone to bring a tile representing their country to be put on the sundial in the UK.

15:30 Back to the hotel – teachers

Teachers also left the school and they had free time till 18.00.

18:00 Grill party in Janek prepared by parents, students, teachers

For the last evening the Polish students and their parents prepared local specialties for a grill party (barbecue) to show their guests the Polish and Silesian typical culinary delights, for example:

grilled chicken legs,

homey grilled sausages,

grilled skewers,

and grilled sheep cheese with cranberries. It was a great dinner with a lot of food, good music, singing and dancing, given in our friend’s parish in Janek. After dinner students went back home to the hosting families and teachers were picked up to the hotel.

Friday, May 22nd 2015 Departure Meeting point in front of Willa Ambasador

Departure of the Romanian partners Angelika Jochemczyk accompanied the Romanian teacher and students at 3:30 to go to the airport Katowice- Pyrzowice.

Departure of the Italian partners The Italian teachers and students were picked up by the driver to the airport Katowcie- Pyrzowice at 7:00.

Departure of the UK partners The Uk teacher and student were picked up by the driver to the airport Kraków- Balice at 7:00.

Departure of the Austrian partners The Austrian teacher and students were picked up by the driver to the railway station in Katowice at 8:00.

Departure of the Swedish partners The Swedish teacher and students were picked up by t6he driver to the airport Katowice- Pyrzowice at 9:30.

Departure of the French partners The French teachers and students were picked up at 9:30 to visit the museum in Auschwitz- Birkenau and after that to the airport Katowice- Pyrzowice.

Departure of the Turkish partners The Turkish teachers and students were picked up to the airport Kraków- Balice at

10:30.

Departure of the Spanish partners The Spanish teacher and student were picked up at 13:00 30 to visit the museum in

Auschwitz- Birkenau and the next day in the company of Angelika Jochemczyk to the

airport Kraków- Balice.

4. Conclusion

The Polish teachers and students were happy to welcome all the partners here in Zabrze! It was a please to us to give you some impressions about our school, our city and our culture. I hope we could fulfil most of your expectations and we are happy to meet you again in UK.

First of all, we are greatful for the support of our colleagues and staff in our school. We managed this meeting with help of them, our students and parents. Besides, thanks to this meeting our students gained a new vision about Europe. They enjoyed spending time with the students from abroad and they began to know the different cultures and learnt how important to keep in touch with the foreigners. This meeting also important for them to improve their English. This meeting was a great experience for our parents, students, teachers and other school staff. Thank you for coming to Zabrze!
