June 22 was “tremendous day” for Fort Jackson and South Carolina as command of the installation was passed from “one outstanding leader to another,” said Maj. Gen. Malcolm Frost, the leader of the Army’s Center for Initial Military Training.

That day, Brig. Gen. Milford “Beags” Beagle Jr. took the reins of the “pioneer” training installation from Maj. Gen. John “Pete” Johnson during the ceremony held on Fort Jackson’s Victory Field.

Beagle returned to the Palmetto State, from a stint as the 10th Mountain Division’s Deputy Commanding General for Support, to command the “premier training post in the U.S. Army” that trains the majority of the Army’s Soldiers each year. The Basic Combat Training mission of Fort Jackson and the ATC is con-ducted by 56 basic training companies in 11 battalions and two

brigades. The 51st Commanding General of Fort Jackson, was born and

raised in South Carolina where he was a high school track star and distinguished military graduate from South Carolina State University, in Orangeburg. He is “fully invested” in the Army and the Midlands – his son serves in the Army, and his extended Family calls much of the local area home.

Frost said Beagle is the best choice to take over for Johnson.

Believe it or not, it actually can get hotter at Fort Jack-son.

While temperatures in the state have brushed against triple-digits in recent weeks, the Environmental Division of the Directorate of Public Works has pushed forward with its responsibility for conducting controlled burns on the installation, even as the season for controlled burns comes to a close.

Fort Jackson collected roughly $300,000 for the Army Emergency Relief campaign, #@ $&@ M -nounced recently.

The Fort Jackson six-man fundraising campaign team of Maj Matt Hintz, Capt Matt Walmsley, and Staff Sgts. Vallin Graham, Jon Tuttle, Caleb Caulder and Julian Quevedo put in countless hours to ensure the success of the campaign.

The team briefed over 10,000 Soldiers and made it their personal mission to educate Sol-'3#*"

“It’s important to educate Soldiers about AER as soon as possible because it will cause Z3&#*-er predatory loans that they might get” said Sgt. 1st Class Tia Williams, a drill sergeant with Echo Company, 1st Battalion, 13th In-

fantry Regiment. The AER program aims to alleviate the

strain of unpredictable emergency situations ' "Y&'-ness and allows Soldiers to focus on the Ar-my’s mission. In this aspect, the program is an essential element to maintaining the well-ness and functionality of the force.

AER provides assistance with essential travel, rent or mortgage payments, vehicle repair or payments, minor home repairs, and more. One of the primary keys to Sol-diers getting the help they need is having the knowledge of what assistance is available. Each year, the annual AER fundraising cam-paign brings awareness to the program and gives Soldiers an opportunity to contribute.

This year’s AER Fundraising Campaign kicked off at the NCO club with a brief look into an organization that, for 76 years, has M'' ( @

Soldiers and their Families. The campaign theme titled “There for Those Who Serve” emphasized the support and assistance AER has been providing Soldiers and their Fami-

lies. Since its conception in 1942, AER has been focused on continuing with its motto “Helping the Army Take Care of its Own”, and relieve stress upon Soldiers and their de-pendents.

Up until present day, AER has continued its mission to meet the needs of Soldiers fac-( ''@'-ferent.

The opportunity to educate Soldiers of all ranks of the resources available may de-ter predatory lenders who may target Service members and their Families.

NEWSCommunity strengths and themes assessment

The Community Health Promotion Council is asking the Fort Jackson com-munity to take about 15-20 minutes to complete the Community Strengths and Themes Assessment survey at https://usaphcapps.amedd.army.mil/Survey/se.ashx?s=251137455DDCC5A4.

This is a volunteer survey designed to capture the community member’s feel-ings on quality of life, health, safety, and satisfaction within the environment of an Army installation.

This anonymous survey ask you some demographic information which is used to ensure we have representatives from all groups.

These questions are asked of all groups (Family members, DA civilians, Retirees, and Soldiers). Completion of the survey assists Brig. Gen. Milford “Beags” Beagle Jr. in determining the adequacy of our ex-isting resources and identify additional needs on the installation.

For more information call Ernestine Richardson at 751-7938.

Criminal Investigation Command

The U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Command’s Computer Crime Investigative Unit is warning the Army community to be on the lookout for the “Virtual Kidnapping” hoax.

The scam occurs when an unsuspecting person receives a call and the caller immediately says, “I’ve kidnapped your kid. Send money or the kid dies,” or some similar version of the call.

Although this is not a new scam, it recently happened to a member #@[@"\+& Z@ '3 3 &M ' '< ' ' '+safe in class.

“Often, victims of the virtual kidnapping fraud are chosen random-ly. The person who answers the telephone is the victim, and no one 3Z''$\1 '" (3 Z&3Z+z& '"Y@'sequential numbers until the call is answered by someone they can shock into believing that their child has been kidnaped. The caller’s approach is forceful, well scripted and can be very convincing.”

Recipients of the call report hearing screaming in the background and desperate pleas for help, a crying child and other equally frighten-ing sounds. The caller is loud, abrasive, abrupt, and demanding.

When the “kidnapper” uses the child’s name, it will cause the vic-

tim to panic and become more compliant. But keep in mind that the caller might have found the child’s name on social media or the parent might have inadvertently told the caller the child’s name during the course of the call.

What to Do: If you receive a phone call from someone demanding ransom for

an alleged kidnap victim, consider the following: In most cases, the best course of action is to hang up the phone. \ @& (( '< Z+'( @&

loved one’s name. Try to slow the interaction. Request to speak with your family

member directly by saying “how do I know my loved one is OK? Ask questions only the alleged kidnap victim would know such

as the name of a pet. Avoid sharing information about yourself or your family.

Attempt to contact the “kidnapped” victim via phone, text, or social media, and request they call back from their own cell phone.

To buy time, repeat the caller’s requests and tell them you are writing down the demand or tell the caller you need time to get things moving.

If you suspect a real kidnapping is taking place, immediately [%\ $\1 + agency.
