Murray to Moyne Women
If you have seen the riders training for the Murray to Moyne cycle challenge this year you might have noticed that there is a greater proportion of women taking part than there has been previously. Patricia O’Sullivan and Dee Smith took part last year, but the 2011 team is a first for Marj McConnell, Kathy Velleley and Annie Meadows and all the girls are really enjoying it. “It’s been great to mix with a broad group of people of all ages and interests” Marj said. “I think we range in age from 16 to 64 and I’m not the oldest on the team!” McConnell rode with her sister in the Great Vic Bike ride last year, from Yarrawonga to Marysville and found great enjoyment in the companionship of the other riders. “That’s what I like the best” she said.” It’s the comradery”.
Patricia O’Sullivan was inspired by seeing the teams ride through Boort in 2009. “I was amazed by how normal the riders looked and thought - I could do this too! I started off riding around the lake with Annie Meadows just to exercise 30min per day but this escalated to training to do Around the Bay in a Day along with Deanne Smith and I surprised myself with my dedication to training, and how much I enjoyed doing long 100-150km rides, culminating in doing the 210km Melbourne ride in Oct 2009. The M2M is great because you get to ride in a group especially on the longer training rides to Wychitella and Charlton, which is not only easier but it makes it fun as well.”
“It’s all new to me” said Annie Meadows “I’ve never had any kind of sporting achievement before. Friends who have known me for years can’t believe it’s the same person. Trish and I joked about riding to Charlton for a coffee, when we first started out and last Sunday we finally did it on our team ride”. Meadows said “It feels good to be so fit and I’ve made a conscious decision to improve my eating habits along with my fitness. My oldest sister is currently going through hell with treatment for bowel cancer, my Mum died from Skin Cancer in December and my old High School friend, Lesley (Cockle) Hepburn died from cancer at only 43, in January. So I’ve resolved to give my body more respect as it’s the only one I’ve got and to keep myself as fit and healthy as I can. That’s been the big motivation for me and cycling has been my vehicle of choice to make it happen. ”
After working at BDH for the past few years and helping in an administrative way for the M2M cycle challenge, Kathy Velleley, wanted to see whether she could do the ride herself. “As a sporting person I have participated in both team and individual sports and this challenge excited me. The ride is not only a physical challenge but also a mental one and I wanted to see whether I could push myself in both these directions.” The training rides have been a great opportunity to meet new people and get to know them other than to say hello in the street. As a woman with two young children it has been a big commitment to do this event and try to fit in all the training, but I have had fantastic family and friend support which has made it easier.” Dee Smith is a M2M veteran, lining up for her 4th cycle relay challenge. “Last year we had brilliant weather conditions which made it just so enjoyable” she said “But boy oh boy I’ve ridden in some doozies.” Including one year when Smith was pregnant with eldest son, Conor. “That was a bit ordinary. I’d been sick quite a bit beforehand and the weather was atrocious. But my husband Adrian reckoned I out performed the rest of the team! And I guess Conor could say he’s already done the Murray to Moyne!”
All the girls say it’s been terrific to be involved with
the team and recommend it to anyone else out
there who might be thinking that they’d like to have
a go. “You do need to dedicate yourself to getting
the miles in your legs as we say, but anyone can
do it. Just take a look at us, we’re a motley crew,
we span the decades and abilities but we’re all in
there having a go and it’s great. Besides, we girls
have to keep Ashraf in line!!”

Boort Community.

Boort Swimmers perform at Junior Country
Championships Five swimmers from the Boort Club competed at the Junior Country
Championships held at Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre (MSAC)
last weekend. Conor Grogan placed 2nd in the Butterfly heat and took
nearly two seconds off his personal best (PB) time. Stephanie Couper
and Anya Eicher took over a second off their qualifying Butterfly times
also. In Backstroke Conor again swam a one second faster PB. In
Breastroke Conor took nearly 4 seconds off his PB, as did Stephanie.
Lastly, in Freestyle Conor reduced his PB by 1.5 seconds, and
Stephanie and Anya both thrashed their qualifying times.
In the younger age groups Rory Grogan took a whopping 5.5 seconds
off his Backstroke time and Bella Grogan took 2.5 seconds off hers. In
Freestyle Rory reduced his qualifying time by 3.5 seconds. Bella took
2.5 seconds off her qualifying time in her heat of Breastroke placing 3rd
and gaining a position in the final. She then took another 3 seconds off
her previous best to take out 6th place in the final.
All five swimmers acquitted themselves admirably against competition
from all over the state. The Boort swimmers would be some of the very
few competitors who made the championships who do not train all year
round in indoor pools, and as such can be very proud of their
achievements.
Pictured beside is Bella Grogan looking very happy after making the
final in the 8 year old girls 50m Breastroke.

GOLF CLUB
The Boort Golf Club season will officially open on Saturday 16th April with a men’s and ladies stableford event
commencing at 12.45.
Before this can happen there are people required to bring the Golf Course into order as with the wet summer there is
a huge amount of work to be done. The heavy rain and water flowing through the golf course has damaged many of
the sandgreens and also the bunkers on the course. There is work available for men and ladies so come along and
help even during the week if you have free time. Many hands make light work and it would be great to start the sea-
son with the golf course looking great.
The ladies Pennant commences on the 2nd May at Boort followed by the Ladies Leather Day
on Thursday 12th May.
IMPORTANT MEETING—BOORT GOLF CLUB Attention all Boort Golf Club Members and anyone who has any interest in the Golf Club at
all.
An Extraordinary/Crisis meeting will be held at Boort Golf Club on Monday 28th March
starting at 8:00pm sharp. Anyone who has played or intends to play golf should attend.
