Verbal Irony

What is verbal irony?

To identify and understand verbal irony you must first read through the article to fully understand what the author really thinks. Then look for statements that contradict that.

Argumentative Structure

Arguments are most effective when they use a variety of types of support for their claims.

An example: an argument supported only by an anecdote might not be convincing because it would not prove the claim valid in more than a few specific situations. Also a claim that is supported by a statistic, or numerical facts, might not help the reader understand the issue’s effect on real people

“Blaxicans” and Other Reinvented Americans by Richard Rodriguez

Please read through the article silently first.

Use the following questions to guide your thinking. Please highlight evidence for the answers in your text.

Use these questions to guide your thinking. Please highlight evidence for the answers in your text and write your response on a separate sheet of paper.

1. Reread the first two sentences and find the verbal irony on page 141. How is the literal meaning in the first two sentences different than how Rodriguez really feels?

2. How does paragraph 2 set the tone for the rest of the essay?3. What words and phrases does the author use to express tone in the

paragraph that begins with “Race mixture has not been…”?4. Paragraph 11 is an anecdote, or brief story about an event or

situation, that illustrates or explains an idea. How does this anecdote help clarify the idea Rodriguez was making in Paragraphs 9 and 10?

5. Rodriguez says that Hispanic is an ethnic term “denoting culture”. Why does Rodriguez feel these characteristics do not really represent his identity (Refer to Paragraph 10-15)?

6. Reread paragraph 15 & 16, cite an example of two facts and an anecdote. Then explain how they are related.

7. In paragraph 20, the author asserts that today’s young people use categories other than those of race to identify themselves. Paraphrase that paragraph. Then write a paragraph or two in which you support or deny that assertion.
