PRESIDENTS REPORT OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2017

NOVEMBER MEETING

Welcome back to No. 66 after such a long break.

Prior to Christmas, Valerie Herpen and Kathryn Sinclair sadly farewelled their husbands. Cards were sent to both members. We were delighted that Valerie felt strong enough to join us for Christmas Lunch.

Valerie won Sams lovely Christmas quilt which we hope put a sparkle in her day.

Judith and I accepted an invitation to the WRAAC Christmas Lunch at the Good Earth Hotel on the 25th November. As usual we felt comfortable in the company of other exservice personnel. The lunch was enjoyable and the raffle prizes numerous.

2nd December Reunion Committee met at Trish Clarks home to fill information packages for the reunion in WA in 2020. These information packages will be distributed to attendees at the Hunter Valley Reunion in March 2018. Trish and husband Alan were travelling East prior to Christmas and offered to deliver 350 packages to the Hunter Valley Reunion Committee. Trish and Alans generosity saved us an enormous cost transporting them via commercial means. Thank you, Trish and Alan.

Fifty-four members and guests joined together for a few hours of camaraderie at Christmas Lunch on 4th December. The feed-back during and since suggested a successful day.

The ringing of a bell alerted us to the unexpected arrival of Father Christmas aka Dawn French or was that actually Jo Brook.

A basket of goodies was distributed to all guests. Jo's impromptu impersonation of Father Christmas was a surprise to all and created much fun and laughter. Thank you, Jo, and to Bev, who was her assistant. Jo, I have noted your expertise in impersonations and you can be assured of a booking for 2018.

The generosity of members donating money and gifts for the raffle was overwhelming. On behalf of the committee I say "thank you" - you always deliver in spades.

Another surprise for members was Sams quilts which were greatly admired. Sue has approached Sam to create a WRANS Badge quilt as a raffle prize at the reunion. Sam has received further orders. Perhaps a cottage industry has immerged for Sam.

Sue Hackett, on behalf of the Steering Committee, made a special presentation to Lesley Peters awarding her a Certificate as the No.1.Ticket Holder for the 2020 Reunion. Lesley was the first member, nation-wide, to pay her Registration Fee. Hopefully an example has been set.

If members have photos from the Christmas Lunch could they please forward to Irene for inclusion on our Facebook site.

On the 12th January Sue, Irene & I meet with Ian Holthouse in Mandurah. Ian, as President of the State Ex Naval Assoc. had offered to meet with us to discuss how they could help towards the reunion in 2020. Ian will endeavour to obtain for us a grant from DVA to cover the cost of items such as portable banners, table centre flags etc. He will also approach Capt. Brian Delamont at HMAS Stirling to ask if they could support us with items for the goodies bags. So, members, we must again impress Capt. Delamont on Anzac Day with our marching as he was very complimentary last year.

Ian also mentioned that Affiliates are now entitled to be covered by the State for insurance when members attend

meetings. This is indeed a bonus. The annual affiliate sub has been increased to $100 pa a worthy expense now that we are entitled to insurance cover.

Irene & I were delighted to represent the Association at Perth City Councils annual presentation of Citizenship Certificates to some of our newest Australians. Sixty people from 22 countries swore allegiance. One of the youngest a little girl of about 5 from Romania impressed the Officials as she spoke the entire Affirmation without prompting. Dressed in a pretty floral dress and with a circle of flowers in her hair she received a resounding applause as she marched proudly back to her seat clutching her certificate.

Irene has written a full report on the days proceedings for inclusion in the Newsletter.

Let us look forward to another year of happy gatherings and enjoyable social functions which, without the continuing support of you all would be difficult.

SAY A PRAYER

Little Johnny and his family were having Sunday dinner at his Grandmothers house. Everyone was seated around the table as the food was being served. When little Johnny received his plate, he started eating right away. Johnny! Please wait until we say our prayer. Said his mother. I dont need to, the boy replied. Of course, you do, his mother insisted. We always say a prayer before eating at our house. Thats at our house, Johnny explained. But this is Grandmas house and she knows how to cook.

DID NOAH FISH?

A Sunday School teacher asked, Johnny do you think Noah did a lot of fishing when he was on the Ark? No replied Johnny, How could he, with just two worms

BEING THANKFUL

Rabbi said to a precocious six year old boy, So your mother says your prayers for you each night?. Thats very commendable. What does she say?

The little boy replied, Thank God hes in bed!

CHRISTMAS LUNCHEON was held at the RAAFA Bullcreek and 54 members, friends and invited guests attended. We were fortunate to have our own little function area and that made it so much easier with our setting up of the tables, displaying the many raffle prizes including 2 bottles of wine donated by Ian Holthouse.

There were many toasts and speeches to start once everyone got seated.

The meal itself was lovely with 2 choices of mains and desserts. Then over to the bar in the next room to order a drink.

The raffle event was marked with much laughter and hilarity and cheering. 1st prize went to Judith Logan a beautiful hamper. 2nd and 3rd prizes were $50 gift

vouchers from Bunnings and Spotlight respectively and many prizes followed thanks to an abundance of donations.

Invited guest Ex-Wren Myra Olsson was a winner of one of the bottles of wine.

Mrs Clause (Jo Brook), with her helper (Bev Kain) did a fabulous job giving a gift to everyone.

Once the meal was finished Anne DeVries and Lyn Martz got up and sang a couple of Christmas carols and then after that people got up from their tables and mingled and talked, drank a little more and then tea and coffee finished up the afternoon.

A wonderful day was had by all and Val and her committee did a wonderful job setting up - starting with a very artistic menu, place names on the tables, bonbons and making the room look extremely festive and jolly.

AUSTRALIA DAY CITIZENSHIP & AWARDS CEREMONY

Val Graham and I attended the Citizenship & Awards Ceremony on behalf of the WRANS-RAN Assoc of WA on Friday 26th held by the City of Perth. It was held on the forecourt of Council House in St Georges Tce. Addresses were made by Her Excellency the Honourable Kerry Sanderson AC, Governor of Western Australia and the Right Honourable the Lord Mayor Lisa-M Scaffidi.

There were approximately 58 new citizens attended and for those that are interested in statistics, here are the countries they came from:

8 from Britain, 3 from the UK, 6 from India, 5 Republic of Ireland, 5 Brazil, 4 USA, 4 Malaysia, 3 Greece, 3 Sri Lanka, 2 France, 2, Singapore,

2 Romania, 2 Republic of Africa, 1 each from Columbia, Spain, Indonesia, Sth Korea, Mauritius, Poland, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Netherlands,

It was a lovely function, and very pleasing to see young children involved in the ceremony.
