EDITORIAL

Continuing Steph’s theme of “Comings andGoings”, we’ve been thinking how muchthe Exe Valley Community has changedsince we came here nearly 23 years ago.Of course, we are 23 years older and don’thave the energy we came with and we’veseen many loved ones move away, or passon. You’d think it might be a sad anddespondent place to live but not a bit of it !!Nothing could be further from the truth.

All of us “oldies” are still young at heart andwe are fortunate that some wonderful newpeople have settled in. We’ve been soencouraged, when reading through theRound-ups, to see that our CommunitySpirit is alive and well. There seems to beso much going on - it’s incredible.

We may have had a record number ofFunerals recently but we have also had anencouraging number of Baptisms andWeddings and an inspirational Rector wholeads by example.

In recent months we have, unfortunately, lost several Organists and some Churchesare trying out recorded music, which can bevery successful. This may have to be theway forward but If you know anyone whowould like to try playing the Organ forServices, please contact Steve, in the Office.

QUARTER CENTURY OF MINISTRY IN THE EXE VALLEY

Sadly it is time to say “Goodbye”. Marion and I moved to East Sidborough in January 1993, the longest time wehave lived in one house since our marriage in 1969. We have loved our time here, I fell in love with Devon when

I was at school in Barnstaple for five years, after World War 2, and Marion was born and bred just over the borderin Somerset.

But life moves on, The Lord is telling us that it is time to move nearer family, so we are off to Shropshire withinthe next month or so, near to our daughter Charmian and closer to York, where our son Matthew is a ChurchMinister. Our over-arching feeling is one of deep thankfulness, mixed with a tinge of sadness, at leaving so manyfriends from the Exe Valley. Thankfulness to you all for your welcome, friendliness and appreciation of my ministryamongst you, and the welcome received in regular ministry in each of the nine churches of the Exe Valley; butspecial thankfulness to those nine clergy amongst whom I have been privileged to work - 5 Rectors* and 4 Teamvicars**. I have learnt so much from them and I thank them for putting up with my idiosyncrasies and trust thatmy time as a team member and Licensed Assistant Minister, (latterly having the Bishop’s Permission To Officiate, spot the difference!) has been of some help and encouragement to them over the years.

Above all, my thanks must be to the Lord Jesus Himself for the immense privilege of being an ordained ministerof the Gospel, being free to preach the Gospel and teach the Bible. My memories extend from leading regularservices in each of the nine churches, to the Alpha courses in the early days held at The Mill, Lower Washfield, tothe Christianity explored courses in Washfield Hall and Oakford Hall when we discovered from Mark’s Gospel, whothe Lord Jesus really is. It was a joy and a privilege to see folk come to faith in Jesus and others revitalise theirfaith. Further memories include the TROGS young people’s group and the many Home Group evenings which havebeen such a precious part of our experience here, where closer friendships have been forged.

When we came to the Exe Valley, the stipendiary clergy had just been reduced from four to three and therewas concerned discussion as to how we were going to manage with only three full time clergy!. As time went onthis was further reduced to two, to one and a half and of course now to just one. It became increasingly obviousthat if regular worship was to be retained in all our churches then it would be necessary to train lay members ofthe congregations to lead services. When Andrew Rose and I started the SEAN lay leaders’ training course, I thinkI am right in saying that only two parishes had any lay led services; volunteers quickly came forward for trainingand a course of action was put in place which has been continued under Steph’s leadership so that all parishesnow have some services led by members of the congregation.

The above are just some of the memories of a quarter-century in the Exe Valley. Our names first appear in theLoxbeare visitors book on 22nd June 1992 and I took my first service in Loxbeare church at 3.00pm on 17th October1993, in my capacity as Reader, since I was not ordained until the following year.

So again, thank you for all that you have given to Marion and myself over these many years. We have been sohappy in the Exe Valley and are, of course, sorry to leave. I have tried to be faithful to The Lord Jesus and to thescriptures which testify about Him and pray that the Exe Valley will always be a Group of churches which put theBible at the forefront of their preaching and beliefs.

God Bless you all. John Roberts.*Harold Whitty, Colin Mee, Godfrey Bell, Stephen Goodbody (with his curate Rob Brewis), Steph Gordon-Jeffs.**Roderick Thorp, Derek Chedzey, Ben Luck, Andrew Rose.

FROM THE ARCHIVES‘TODAY’ 50 years agoAugust and September, 1969

The lead article in the combined August/ September issue focused on the

recent Apollo 9 moon landing, and the‘confident’ prediction that, “… withinfifteen years we shall be on Mars”! Whilstadmiring the achievement, the suggestionwas that it had come about for all thewrong reasons, born out of political rivalrybetween the USA and USSR, based onfear of what the other might achieve.

On a brighter note, the Group Country Fairat Easterlands was not lacking insuperlatives when it came to opinions ofits success. Even the Bishop

“....admitted that there isn’t another Groupin the Diocese quite like ours”! The totalraised was £363.

Members of the Mothers’ Union haddecided that they needed to get out andget on with jobs, rather than just sittingand listening! An action group was tobegin at Withleigh Rectory in October.

A Sunday night concert at Calverleigh hadraised £34 for the Spastics Society.

The 1st Oakford Girl Guides had enjoyeda treasure hunt in the grounds of HolmePlace, and six guides ran the children’scorner at the Group Country Fair. Theyhad also attended their first church parade.

The Rackenford sports day had been agreat success, with tea sales breaking allrecords. “With a double sitting at theGaiety Hall, folk could just be squeezedin”. The Sunday school outing toTeignmouth had enjoyed the sunshine.

The Stoodleigh ladies netball team wasflourishing, playing at least one matchevery week. It was hoped that moreparishes within the Group would be ableto raise a team next year.

The Withleigh sponsored walk had raised£110 towards the cost of a new Groupminibus.

NATURE NOTES

When the sun shines it is hard to resistthe lure of Cornwall, although the

journey is always surprisingly long. Weare comforted by the thought that the timeaway allows our new neighbours moreuninterrupted time to settle in.

The first was the family of robins. Theynest in the bank by the house and theirhome is not structurally complex butalways appears cosy and dry. Even in thepoor light of dusk you can see the yellowand radiant open beaks of the chicks asthey clamour to be fed. They have longsince departed and our attention rapidlyturned to the swallows which arrivedbefore the house martins. This year theformer decided to build their nest in our

‘lean to’. Much mud, straw and grit wascollected from the paths and stream andthe result is a scruffy lump in the corner, where two roof supporting beams meet. The prospective parents are incrediblyalert and immediately depart when theydetect any sound or movement aroundour back door. Their movement is so fastthat you have to recover from the flash ofblack that may be uncomfortably nearyour head, before the beauty of their flightcan be appreciated. It is hard to avoid thefeeling of guilt when you need to getsomething from the lean to, and you enterlike a burglar.

Unfortunately the house martins abortedtheir nest building efforts. As with theswallows it was a two bird job but wasslower, requiring many more excitedcries and skill but we are only left withlines of graffiti in preparation for theirnest in the eaves. Knowledgeable birdersinform me that the most likely reason fora halt being called would be the death ofone of the pair.

The gloomy mood was not improved bywhat seemed to be smaller numbers ofseals and nesting birds at the coast. Itwas therefore heartening to hear of thegreat success story at Lundy wherenesting numbers have greatly increasedthanks to effective conservation efforts. Ihope similar care will extend to our fishstocks – we are surely better than thegreedy herring gulls, out for easypickings by cathedral green or coast.

The Annual Duck Race was held onSaturday 25 May and the weather wasgood. Our race starter this year wasKathy Welden who sported a fetchinghand-made hat for the occasion. A greatmany supporters followed their ducksdownstream and once the race was overmade their way to the village hall for adelicious selection of refreshmentswhere they awaited the announcement ofthe winners. Over £1,000 was raised ofwhich £450 was donated to FORCE andtheir work at Tiverton Hospital, with theremaining going towards the churchwindow restoration fund. Our thanks goto the organisers Lorna and Geoffrey, landowners, race judges, sponsors, theladies serving the refreshments and allwho purchased ducks and teas.

On 29 May Aubrey and Julie Goldsworthyhad the great honour of attending a RoyalGarden Party at Buckingham Palace. Anomination had been put forward bysomeone who remains anonymous atthis time, in recognition of their hard workand dedication over the years for both thechurch and the community, and a formalinvitation was later received. They work

tirelessly to help keep our little churchthe way it is, much of which is behind thescenes. They had a lovely time althoughthe weather was not as good as it hadbeen, but it did not spoil the wonderfuloccasion. They enjoyed the splendour ofthe surroundings, the music provided byArmed Forces bands and the food. Beingso close to the Queen and many othermembers of the Royal Family will leavethem with many memories that will neverbe forgotten. No one deserves it more, sothank you both and congratulations!

The Praise Party at the beginning of June,in the village hall, was a fun and familyfriendly service and despite a slighttechnical hitch at the start of the serviceit continued well with lots of interactivesongs and a story told by Steph. Nikki,Dave, Tasha and Marc also took partduring the service which was followed byactivities for the children and tea andcake for all. The next one will take placeat 3.30pm on 1 September, do comealong if you can.

With the weather continuing to be set fair, the Open-air service on 30 June wasindeed in the open with no worry as towhether we would have to be inside thisyear. The concern was more whether wewould all suffer from sunstroke!!Thankfully there was a slight dip in thetemperature and a bit of cloud. The lovelyservice was led by Nikki and the veryentertaining talk given by Rev’d StephGordon-Jeffs. Who knew that bananashad so many uses? Rev’d Robert Gordonprovided the musical accompanimentwith his guitar and played a touchingsong during the service. It also was goodto hear the choir who sang three hymnsand Nikki found an appropriate andthought-provoking poem, fit for thesurroundings. The service was thenfollowed by home-made fruit punch,tea/coffee and light refreshments. Thankyou to all who took part in any way.

On 3 July, Aubrey, Julie and Jackieattended the farewell service ofArchdeacon Christopher Futcher who willbe taking up a new post in Cyprus. TheEvensong service at Exeter Cathedralwas attended by people from all cornersof the Exeter Diocese. As they left, ourthanks and very best wishes were givento him from Calverleigh.

We give our thanks also to Alison Webberwho has very kindly updated theBaptismal Roll. We have seen manyBaptisms in the last 12 months for whichwe praise God and look forward towelcoming more families in the future.

Congratulations go to anyone who hascelebrated a milestone birthday, birth ofa new family member or any othercelebration. We pray that the youngpeople who are awaiting exam resultsreceive the good news that they arehoping for, in readiness for the next stageof their lives.

Our thoughts and prayers are with all whoare awaiting or undergoing treatment atthis time and also those who are grievingthe loss of a loved one. If you would liketo be mentioned personally in our prayersplease get in touch so that we cansupport you prayerfully.

By serving Him, we are serving you

“… God is not far from each of us,for in Him we live and move and have our being ...” Acts 17 v 28

GOOD NEWS!

Praise the Lord! After many hours of prayer (and some difficulties!) the Lord has allowed NewCreation to appoint a lovely new assistant, Kim, and to take the lease of 13, Bampton Street, next to the Nationwide Building Society. This shop offers new possibilities, having severalrooms downstairs and a small area outside. It will need refurbishing and a kitchen installed.

Help! (We are planning to use professionals to carry out the major works but there will still beplenty of smaller jobs you could help with). If you enjoy using a paint brush, fixing shelves,

moving boxes of books, DIY, cleaning etc. please offer to help. We’d love to welcome you onboard! Actual moving day will be sometime in September with (God willing) our official

opening on our Last month, at a very successful open day peoplewere able to meet Kim, and we asked for suggestions for new ways to spread the Gospel.

Please join us in prayer so that the Lord will show us which new ideas we should implement.

Living in such a beautiful part of the country, we are sure to welcome plenty of visitors thissummer! Please bring them to New Creation where they can browse Christian books, CDs,greeting cards and other Christian merchandise. In many parts of the country the localChristian bookshops have closed so a visit to New Creation, not only to browse or look for

something to encourage them but also to taste one of Penny’s and Kim’s range of snacks andcakes, might be a real treat

Please ask for our Loyalty Card – have 6 hot drinks and get the 7th FREE!

We have a great range of children’s and teens’ books for summer reading, either by youngpeople themselves, or for adults to read to younger children.

There will also be some special cakes for young ones to sample!

Are you aghast at all the plastic rubbish on land and at sea? At the moment ‘tearfundACTION’has a campaign to petition Coca-Cola, Nestle, PepsiCo and Unilever to take responsibility fortheir plastic waste. To make your voice count please take a ‘THIS IS A RUBBISH CAMPAIGN

CARD’, sign it, and then return it to Tearfund, 100 Church Road, Teddington TW11 8QE.More info. from www.tearfund.org/action

We are so thankful for the Lord’s provision, with Kim and new premises, enabling us tocontinue the work He gave us thirty-one years ago, providing Christian resources for ourcommunity. (2 Corinthians 4 v 1 to 7) We are aware of all the support we receive from you,

both in prayer and by using the shop and cafe. Several of our supporters also provide directfinancial help, either with one off gifts or regular giving.

So, thank you, and may God bless you all this holiday time with safe travel and enjoyableexperiences.

With our love and prayers.

CRUWYS ARMS GARDENERSMeeting on 5 June at the Cruwys Arms, flying pests dominated the earlydiscussions and suggestions on the bestdeterrents. Then we drifted on toMorrisons car park in Tiverton which isplanted with Catalpa - are the beansedible? Poor seed germination hadaffected many of us this year - soak peasfor 20 minutes before planting to improvegermination. Use surplus pea seeds toproduce pea shoots which are wonderfulin salads.

Tagetes will deter whitefly; so we willgive it a try. So why not come along for a tasty mealand bring friends? Tickets £7 from Dawn01398 324035 or Wendy 01398 351383(bring your own wine).

The Bells, the Bells! For 200 years thejoyful bells of St Peter’s have rung in ourParish. They’ve marked our services, weddings, funerals and nationaloccasions but unless major restoration iscarried out very soon, Oakford’s bellsmay ring no more. A major restorationappeal is under way. A particularlyeffective way to offer your support to thisappeal is to give a heart to the paper dollsin the church. You can give as many asyou like. Each heart costs £1 per weekwhich is collected by direct debit via theParish giving Scheme (PGS).The schemeis free to use. Gift Aid is added and 100%is paid into the appeal fund. The beautyof donating in this way is that you are alsogiving clear evidence of committedcommunity support. This will help uswhen we apply for grants. Each monththe paper dolls receive their shiny newhearts (and messages) to represent every£1 given in this way. You can stop givingat any time, but we hope you’ll keep it upfor at least a year.An explanatory leaflet and PGS Gift Formscan be found at the back of the Church orcontact Dawn 01398 [email protected] or Mary01398 351154 [email protected].

What a superb June we had in StMargaret’s Church. The Festival of

Flowers and Music was an enormoussuccess. Our eleven flower ladies, ledby Betty Wotton and Phyllis Hill, includedPat Aplin, Trish Fish, Angela Hill, LindaHill, Enid Hamidullah, Yvonne Lang, LindaSharrock, Geraldine Talbot and MandyWiddowson.

They were aided by the CreativeCarpenters, Richard Hill and Phil Talbot, who fashioned structures which enabledthe musical instruments to be displayedprominently amongst the flowers.

Special thanks go to West BucklandSchool for lending a variety of musicalinstruments - these were enhanced byloans from many of our villagers. TheChurch was open from Friday 21 June andthere was a steady stream of visitors overthat weekend to enjoy the displays andrefreshments. The Church was also openon reduced hours during the followingweek. Altogether £762 was raised tohelp with the urgent work required on theChurch’s tower and heating system.

On Sunday 23 June, the Church was fullfor a rousing Songs of Praise. Fifteenhymns, chosen by a variety of people, were sung interspersed with poems readby Enid Hamidullah, Roland Chant,Christine Broadbent, Daisy and BertieFaulkner, John Davis, Olivia Wotton and, with a welcome return, Audrey Rigg. Wewere delighted that Steph Gordon-Jeffswas with us and her contributions to thepoems caused much amusement. Thewhole evening was put together byMargaret Cuningham, who foundinteresting details with which to introduceeach hymn, and Jennifer Rowlandson, who kept the singing moving along withher skilled organ playing.

Newberry Metals, the Scrap Metal Merchants kindlyprovided Templeton Village Hall with twohuge skips. We received so much scrapmetal that we filled the two skips in oneday and asked for a third skip which wasfilled on the following Tuesday! A bigthank you to everyone for all their efforts;the givers, sorters, loaders, cooks andthose with tractors who went around thefarms and houses collecting the metal. Aspecial thank you for Cathy Hunt too, forsuggesting the scrap metal challenge andto Julie Dent for making it happen! Weraised £1,643.41 for village funds whichis great. Well done everyone – what agreat team effort.

Church repairsThe work needed to support, and repairSt Margaret’s Church continues. Everyfive years, the church building must beinspected by an architect or charteredbuilding surveyor approved by the

Diocese. The next quinquennial review isin November this year and there are stillsome outstanding jobs to carry out beforethis review, such as improving thedrainage around the outside of the churchand treating the woodwork in some of thepews. These jobs will be carried out inJuly and August. The inner east wall andthe tower inner wall need to be strippedand re-plastered – and this is likely to becostly. The church bells and the framesupporting the bells are in quite goodcondition but the supports for the framewithin the tower would be unstable if wewanted to ring the bells again. Repairingthis could be expensive!

All good wishesOur thoughts, prayers and all goodwishes go to those in the village who areunwell, in hospital, receiving or awaitingtreatment or going through a tough time.

HIDDEN BOOKS OF THE BIBLE

Someone once made a remark about the hidden books of theBible (merely by a fluke). It kept some people looking so hardfor the facts but for others it was a revelation. Some were ina jam because they could not find them but now the truthfinally struck home to numbers of readers. To some it was adifficult job but others found that it was a most fascinatingsearch. Yes, there will be some names that are hard to spot, and may require judges to help. We will admit that it usuallytakes some working out. There are sure to be loudlamentations. One lady says that she brews a pot of tea, sothat she can concentrate better. It may help you to compete.Relax and see if you can discover the 16 books of the Biblehidden in this paragraph.
