The Prayer Issue

2 CoMission January-March 2011

Greetings from the World Ministries team! We are into another year, another decade and a time of great

opportunity. We pray that this will be a year when you live in the favour of the Lord and that he will give you a fruitful year.

Once again we appreciate you so much and count it an honour to serve our Move-ment in the area of missions. We have made great advances during the last year but we still realise that the world has not yet been reached. We are still looking for people who will pray, give and go. The great commandment to love both God and people passionately still stands and if the Great Commission is still to be accom-plished then it needs each one of us to be committed to the work of mission.

For some time people have been asking us to recreate our missions prayer diary. The moment we make one it becomes out of date because of the fluidity of our work-force, but we do value your prayers.

What I have decided to do with this magazine is to fill it with as many of our workers as possible so you can use it as a manual to identify them. Of course we will make mistakes and by the time it is published there may be changes. Perhaps

some of the photos may not be the ones that each person would prefer, some that we don’t have pictures for and some that we cannot identify for their own security. But we want to bless you with this issue and put on display our magnificent workers around the world.

Please pray for them on a regular basis and give to help their support. And if you can send them a letter from time to time to show them that they are in your thoughts I know that would be much appreciated.

I would love MILLION FOR MISSION to become a reality this year. I will be sending out forms to all the churches for people to give at least £1 per week and if an average of 30 people per church would commit themselves to this we can raise a MILLION FOR MISSION each year. Even if every-one who reads this magazine was to get involved, it would make a significant differ-ence to what we could do in spreading the good news to all.

I trust that this resource issue will be of great benefit and blessing to you and we look forward to your partnership in the gospel.

Thanks for your continued giving to

Incare in the past year.

We were able to give:

Haiti for relief after the earthquake

£150,000+

Pakistan for relief after the floods £40,000+

THANK YOU

We need churches to get involved in this great challenge. All we want is for your

members to give. If around thirty from each church were to give just £1 each per week we

would raise a million pound each year to reach the lost and help the poor.

Please contact the address below and lets do more together than we can on our own

CoMission editor dave Littlewood looks at the work of a missionary during a recent visit to nigeria

The Last Word

Thanks for reading CoMission

What makes a missionary? Just why do people leave home and family and embark on the task of cross-cultural mission? I was able to see

firsthand during a recent visit to my friend Andrew Daniels. Andrew, together with his wife, Jenny, has been working for God in Benin City, Nigeria, for well over 30 years. One of Andrew’s many tasks is to be principal of the All Nations for Christ Bible Institute International, a Bible college origi-nally founded by Benson Idahosa.

So just what is missionary work like? Well, you first of all have to learn to deal with a foreign climate. The heat in Benin City (originally rain forest) is over-powering, with tropical temperatures and high humidity. Just a walk to the car and your shirt is wringing with sweat. To which fact Andrew just smiles and says, “You get used to walking around with your shirt wet!”

Then there are the multitude of incon-veniences that come with living in a de-veloping country. Although Nigeria is an oil-rich country, not much of the money appears to go into public facilities. Hence for large periods of time there are power cuts and a private generator is essential if you want to be able to see after it gets dark at six o’clock.

Then your supply of water is extremely limited, Andrew’s coming from a local borehole which fills a tank twice a day. As the tank is used by many people it soon becomes empty, so you need to store your water in various contain-ers and scoop it out if you want to perform the simplest operation such as washing your hands or flushing the toilet. As to having a shower, you use a bucket and pour the water over your head!

Driving is an interesting experience, as the roads are pitted with huge holes, and a ride to the Bible college where Andrew works is more like an experience on a roller coaster. In the wet season, the roller coaster becomes more akin to a water chute, with your long-suffering

vehicle having to negotiate huge pools of rain water in the road. Often you see the vehicle ahead stuck in the middle of one of these mini-lakes with a seized engine and no one knows whether your car will make it! Added to this there is the sheer terror of other drivers every time you take the car out. Certainly a ride on the roads in Benin City (or even more on the way to the airport in Lagos) is guar-anteed to generate a marked improvement in your prayer life as eternity flashes before you!

That is missionary life before you actually start your mis-sion itself. Of course, this is to a people who are very differ-

ent in culture and expectation. Often their idea of something like timekeeping will be very different from what is expected in a western society. So a huge fund of patience is often required.

So why do these valiant people do it? I put this question to Andrew after the umpteenth failure to get the Internet to work. He smiles again and says, “Be-cause the blessings of doing the work of God here far outweigh the incon-veniences we suffer.” These blessings include having a hand in training literally thousands of Africans, most of whom

are vitally involved in the work that God is doing in Africa today. After 30 years, a whole generation of African minis-ters refer to Andrew as their ‘rabbi’, and call him and Jenny ‘Papa and Momma’. It is the knowledge that they are play-ing a vital and significant role in the enormous explosion of the gospel that is happening in the African continent that keeps the Daniels busy in the work of God when most people would have retired.

Andrew and Jenny’s work is just one example the effort of our dedicated missionaries whose names are found in this issue of CoMission. I do hope that over the year you will use it to support and pray for all our valiant workers on the field.

Thanks for your interest. God bless you in 2011.
