  • Business CardDescription: This is a business card I created for a surf and skate shop that I invented. The shop itself is not real but this is how I pictured their business card would look like.

    Date:1 March 2015

    Course/Instructor:Comm 130-07 Visual MediaJoel Judkins

    Program(s)/Tools:Adobe IllustratorAdobe InDesign

Objectives:Create a simple looking business card that would represent the company.Make it something that customers would want to keep and look at.Use Illustrator and InDesign to create a professional business card.

Process:For the first side of the business card, I went back to the logo with the word shred in it and used it for the title. I added surf and skate next to it and put the address underneath. I put the rest of the information in the corner including my name, number, and e-mail. I decided to keep that side of the card white so the word shred on the logo still blends into the background when it comes off the edges. For the other side of the card, I wanted to follow the same style of the logo so I just took the name of the business, used the same font, and spread it out over the whole card. Then I added surf and skate at the bottom in gray to match the r in shred. I made that side blue to match the blue of the bottom half of the logo.

  • Description:This is a letterhead I created also for the imaginary company Shred. It was part of a stationery project that went along with the business card.

    Date:1 March 2015

    Course/Instructor:Comm 130-07 Visual MediaJoel Judkins

    Program(s)/Tools:Adobe IllustratorAdobe InDesign

Objectives:Create a professional looking letterhead for the company Shred.Design it so that it represents the company and matches the business card.Learn how to design stationery as well as format it correctly in InDesign.

Process:For the letterhead, I took the logo Id made for the business and took out the word shred on the board. Then I decided to add some more orange by putting the orange lines on the top and bottom. I used the same font for the name of the company that had originally been on the logo. I took the logo and made it all one color and used it for the watermark. I changed the opacity to about 35% so it wouldnt be as obvious. I made to sure to add my name, number, e-mail, and address for the business.

  • Description:These are three logo ideas for a surf and skate shop called Shred that I created.

    Date:21 February 2015

    Course/Instructor:Comm 130-07 Visual MediaJoel Judkins

    Program(s)/Tools:Adobe Illustrator

Objectives:Learn how to use shapes, text, and colors to create logos.Make three different logos that would represent one specific business.Better learn the ways of Illustrator to create designs.

Process:I created these logos in Adobe Illustrator using mostly the ellipse tool. For the first logo I made a rounded rectangle and then I cut it in half using the eraser. I used circles and ellipses to create the curve on the gray half and the waves on the blue half. I used rounded rectangles to make the wheels. For the second logo I looked for fonts that I thought fit that surf/skate style and then gave it some color to make it more interesting. I drew the little shapes inside surf and skate with the pen tool to represent water and pavement. I threw in the orange line just for another little detail. For the last logo, I actually tried to copy the shapes of my own skateboards wheel to make it recognizable. I used circles and a pentagon to make the wheel and then also cut it in half with the eraser. I put some text in at the bottom to balance the two halves out. All the logos sort of have this cut in half look to them to show that we have both surf and skate things at Shred.

  • Description:This is a brochure that talks about the company Shred. It has information on how it got started, what they have in their store, and what programs they offer.

    Date: 29 March 2015

    Course/Instructor:Comm 130-07 Visual MediaJoel Judkins

    Program(s)/Tools:Adobe InDesignAdobe Photoshop

Objectives:Create a brochure with a new updated logo that represents a company.Learn how to format and create different brochures in InDesign.Put images, text, and shapes together to create a professional looking brochure.

Process: I started by getting together the format for the brochure in InDesign. I decided to go with just the basic two-fold we learned in class. I measured the different sections out so that it would fold where I wanted it to once I printed it. I planned out where the images and text were going to go and figured out the placement of each element. Next I went to work on the logo so that it would be different for this project. I decided to open it back up in Illustrator and add an image of grip tape and the ocean to the different sections of the logo. I used a clipping mask to put the images inside the original shape of the logo. I put the logo on the front of the brochure and then also copied over the word Shred from my business cards to also go on the front. I worked on the back next, finding an image of an orange wheel to wrap the name of the business and the address around. For the inside, I found images that related to the business and added the body copy Id written before. I separated them into sections putting the images in between the paragraphs. I made all of background the same color blue as the original bottom part of the logo which matched the color of the ocean. Finally I made sure that everything fit where it needed to be, all the borders were the right size, the text was all aligned the way I wanted, the images were the right sizes, and everything was just where it needed to be. Finally I printed it out, trimmed the border, and folded it to complete the brochure.

  • Description:This is a webpage I created that talks about my logo design. It goes through how I made it, why I chose those specific colors, shapes, font, and just my overall design process.

    Date:15 March 2015

    Course/Instructor:Comm 130-07 Visual MediaJoel Judkins

Program(s)/Tools:TextWrangler for HTML and CSS codingAdobe Illustrator

Objectives:Create a web page for Shred that talks about their logo design.Learn the basics of HTML and CSS coding to create a wep page.Use HTML to lay down the foundation and CSS to give the page style.

Process:First I started with a basic HTML layout that wed been given to get the structure of the web page in place. It consisted of a heading, the image of my logo, and a list of sentences where I would later put how I made the logo. Later I added the actual information about my design process as well as the little About section at the top. I put the text into the headings, paragraphs, and lists that I wanted to make the body look organized and clean.

After the HTML was all set, I used a CSS layout that was also given to us to give the web page style. First, I changed all the colors of the different parts and the fonts to match the color scheme of the logo. I added a background image I took instead of just one background color. I changed the padding and width of some of the headings and backgrounds. I also changed the font families to match my logo design. I moved the logo over to the right so that the text would wrap around it and had to mess with the wording in the paragraphs a little bit to make it look nice. I made both of the headings the same size and the other text the same size as well.

  • Description:This is a montage project where I had to take different images and blend them into one. It had to be spiritual in nature so I went with the lines of an LDS hymn.

    Date:15 February 2015

    Course/Instructor:Comm 130-07 Visual MediaJoel Judkins

    Program(s)/Tools:Adobe Photoshop

Objectives:Create a montage of two images in Photoshop by using layer masks.Learn about more tools in Photoshop and what you are cabaple of creating.Design something with a spiritual message in mind that isnt tacky.

Process:First I started by looking at images Id already taken before so I could find one that would maybe look good with text over it. I picked this one of the sunset and then tried to think of something that inspired me and I thought of the hymn I Stand All Amazed which seemed to fit really well with the image. I decided to just use those four words for the big white text. I didnt know what I could blend in to the sunrise and it took me a while to think of something that wouldnt look too cheesy. I thought of doing another place like the beach or flowers but it didnt seem to work well together. Finally I thought of putting the sheet music to the hymn behind it to show the musical notes in the sky. I actually found a png of the music and blended it into the sky using a mask in Photoshop. I used a black brush with several different opacity levels to blend it especially around the text and the people. I made the colors of the sky a little more saturated and moved around the music and text so they would all fit well together. Everything was done in Adobe Photoshop.

  • Description:This is a flier for Vuoants Graduate Leadership Conference which is for graduating seniors.

    Date:24 January 2015

    Course/Instructor:Comm 130-07 Visual MediaJoel Judkins

    Program(s)/Tools:Adobe InDesign

Objectives:Design a flier for Vuoants Leadership Conference in InDesign.Learn the basic tools of InDesign such as shapes and placing images.Make something that would convince students to come to the conference.

Process:The flier needed to be designed on InDesign so I started with a sketch of what I wanted. I wanted to go for a large title on top and then two columns to split up the pieces of the design. I decided to go with a sans serif font for the title because I thought it would work well for the message I wanted. I wanted contrast in the title so I put Graduate in black text on white and then Leadership Conference in white text on black. For the lower part, I decided to put the image on one side and the text on the other. I didnt want image to look heavier than than the text so thats why I put the lighter gray box around the text. To keep some repetition in the design, I put the black box around Leadership Conference and a dark box on the bottom as well as the matching circles. I picked that specific logo because I thought the o in the logo went along with the circles. All together I wanted it to all tie in and look like one unified design.

  • Description:This is an Event Ad for a clothing donation. Life Services is collecting clothes to donate to a home for girls.

    Date:31 January 2015

    Course/Instructor:Comm 130-07 Visual MediaJoel Judkins

    Program(s)/Tools:Microsoft Word

Objectives:Design an ad for an event in Microsoft Word that would encourage people to come.Learn how to use Word as a tool to create designs.Find what Word is capable of creating like shapes, colors, effects, and more.

Process:First I had to scan the image I wanted to use for the event. When I started actually making the design in Word, I decided it would be best to go with the color scheme that image already provided. I tried just putting a large red box on top but it seemed boring to me so I added the tan one to make it a little more interesting. I tried to align the split between the boxes with the line down the image where the lip gloss is. I knew I wanted a san serif font for the title so I downloaded one I liked online and then chose an oldstyle font for the rest of the type. I tried putting it in black first but decided the white looked much better with the dark red behind it. For the final touch I put the arrows pointing at the title to make it stand out. I made them a bit transparent though so they wouldnt take away from the title, just add a little emphasis.

  • Description:This is a photo design project to just show what Im able to do in Photoshop especially with one of my own images.

    Date:8 February 2015

    Course/Instructor:Comm 130-07 Visual MediaJoel Judkins

    Program(s)/Tools:Adobe Photoshop

Objectives:Take an original photo and add text and a color scheme to practive photodeisgn.Learn how to get high quality images in Photoshop and how to edit them. How to make text and other shapes look good on top of an image.

Process:I started out by taking images that fit into the specific categories like thirds and lead space. I decided to make a design out the image I used for lead space because I thought it had the most potential. It seemed to be the simplest option and I thought it would work really well with the quote I had in mind. The photo is of lights on a building and the quote was one about turning on the light from Harry Potter. I did the first edits we were required to do and then I decided to add all the type in areas that had a nice simple space. I tried to align the text with the lines around them. For the color scheme, I used the Deathly Hallow symbol to go along with the Harry Potter quote. I took colors from the original image to match with the symbols and the color of the type.
