BARRIERS TO COMMUNICATION: LINGUISTIC (VERBAL) LINGUISTIC BARRIER PREVENTING THE BARRIER 1. LANGUAGE AND ACCENTS Language: is a system of communication used by a particular community or country Accent: is a unique mode of sound production influenced by the speakers native language 2. SLANG a type of language that consists of words and phrases that are regarded as very informal, are more common in speech than writing, and are typically restricted to a particular context or group of people Avoid using slang, jargons, and idioms Ensure it would be understood correctly by the receiver 3. IDIOMS is a phrase or a fixed expression that has a figurative or literal meaning a group of words established by usage as having a meaning not deducible from those of the individual words 4. JARGONS are special words or expressions that are used by a particular profession or group and are difficult for others to understand 5. ENUNCIATION refers to saying all the sounds clearly Say each word with moderate pacing; giving each word its fair share of time Record and practice 6. PRONUNCIATION refers to how you say or articulate words Have a pocket dictionary! Practice! Practice! Practice! 7. GRAMMAR is the study of how words and their components combine to form sentences is a particular analysis of the system and structure of language or of a specific language Review Reflect Revise 8.
