I want to synthesise a professional working identity with a creative persona. I will incorporate a Twitter feed devoted to my engagement with online marketing, technology, politics and surveillance as well as an exploration of platforms that will enable grater engagement with work-based publics.

I want to use this online persona as a showcase of my abilities to both create strong, original creative content as well as curate and engage with current tools, ideas and trends across the digital landscape.

I have deliberately opted for an identity that does not use my name – barefoot digital. In this way I hope to build a more flexible and scalable brand identity that is not exclusively attached to my name. I will point to my actual identity in strategic places – where I feel it helps to build authenticity and identification for my audiences.

Barefoot Digital evokes the image of a wanderer, a traveller through the digital landscape – Baumann’s ‘’tourist’’ if you like. I have tried to capture in this brand the contradiction of someone who is connected to the land and visceral experience but who is equally comfortable projecting outwards into the contemporary digital landscape.

It imagines a character on a journey of discovery, open to influences, a conduit for the evolving content streams, who is attempting to make sense of them. Barefoot Digital conjures a sense of authenticity. It reflects a desire to sift through and curate quality content that speaks to my audiences with heart. It also fits with my ethos around the production of creative content – playful, engaged and curious.

Barefoot Digital reflects what I aspire to in building a professional/persona presence.

I have used this initial period to better understand the platforms at my disposal. This approach will enable me to identify the best mix of channels to express myself and to capture and advertise my skillset.

Through Twitter (@barefootdigital) I am sourcing, engaging and sharing quality content that explores issues around digital technology, surveillance and politics. The Twitter identity demonstrates my engagement with key influencers in my working spaces, the tools they use and the ideas they share to build the contemporary digital landscape. To date I have done a lot of tweeting and retweeting but want to work more at conversations with those I am following, to better understand their work and to align myself and my content with key influencers.

I am using Medium (https://medium.com/@barefootdigital) to host my creative content – a mix of short stories, missives and satirical commentary on current news events and characters. The stories are accompanied by powerful imagery – to underscore the content and enrich the aesthetic. The content focus will describe my responses to the political landscape, the life I live in regional Victoria and the ironic observations I like to make about contemporary life. It will seek to incorporate the influences of key forms like cartooning and short form fiction and artists like: Leunig, Raymond Carver, Chekhov, Bukowski, Maupassant.

I have integrated these two platforms into a single identity hub using rebelmouse at https://www.rebelmouse.com/barefootdigital/. I tested tagboard.com and flavors.me but found rebelmouse gave greater flexibility in terms of layout and provided a more reliable platform for content curation, integrated from other sources.
