Founded in 2001 by Governor Edmund G. Brown, Jr.

• Governor wanted to expand the model statewide

• Dr. Mark Ryan, OMI Superintendent, worked with Governor to elicit support for NVMI from LAUSD Supe and Board; then Dr. Ryan was appointed first NVMI Superintendent

• LAUSD Charter proposed and approved for July 2013 opening

• Conversion from successful North Valley Charter Academy

NVMIADMISSIONS PROCESS

NVMI is open to any interested student

who is willing to work toward meeting the

academic, leadership, and physical demands of

membership in the Corps of Cadets

Parents must attend a day-long orientation to the

duties of an NVMI parent.

Applicants must successfully complete

an 8-day non-residential summer

camp that familiarizes them with NVMI’s

military and academic culture and

expectations.

NVMIPILLAR II: MILITARY DEVELOPMENT

NEW CADETS:

•Summer “Camp” of eight days to familiarize them with NVMI culture, military courtesy and customs, physical demands, academic rigor

•Five weeks of “Pledge” status to learn California Cadet Corps Curriculum for “Recruit” to “Cadet” promotion

•Culminates with “ringing into” their companies as full-fledged cadets

Training, Assessment, and Counseling Teams

• Each cadet assigned to a military company with a two person TAC Team

• TACs are the focal point for cadet support

• They teach LOC, PE, manage citizenship records, implement school and community service programs, cadet leadership development programs, and all military operations

California Cadet Corps

•Cadets are promoted by passing online and performance task examinations of the CACC•Cadets participate in optional weekend and out-of-school training programs such as leadership schools, bivouacs, survival training, mountaineering, etc•Cadets compete in drill, marksmanship, and physical fitness competitions with other cadet units and JROTC units

• Battalion/Regimental Staff – administrative support to the Corps of 400+ cadets
