Commander’s Message Membership

Another year is gone, a new one lies ahead of us — and once again it’s time to renew your Legion memberships if you haven’t done so already. Monday, December 31st is the official end to the 2008 renewal period. Anyone who hasn’t paid their dues by that date is delinquent, and after February 1st their Legion privileges will be suspended. If dues are still unpaid by June 30, 2008, their membership in the Ameri-can Legion shall be forfeited (Art IX Sect 1 of our bylaws). As of 12/16/07 we had 72 mem-bers who hadn’t turned in their renewal forms and dues. This gave Post 52 a 91% completion record. Have you considered a PUFL (paid up for life) membership instead of annual renew-als? Ask Jess Milford, our Adjutant, for details.

With our continued decline in Bingo attendance we have had to find other methods to generate income for our charitable donations. This past year we had 2 very successful Pancake Break-fasts to benefit the Legion Baseball program, and hopefully this year will see many more similar occasions. To make these types of events easier on the cooks, we are in the proc-ess of revising the kitchen to make it a little more “user friendly.” All the money for the renovation has come from donations and I

would like to thank Charlie Jackson, Rod MacLeod, Jess Milford, Joe Nowak and Jim Whitesell for their generosity. In addition, the commercial stove will be sold to the Elks Lodge with the proceeds going toward the pur-chase of the new stove and griddle.

I hope everyone had a Merry Christmas and joyful New Year. I look forward to seeing you at the next Monthly Potluck!

Frank R. Kaye, Commander, 2005-2008

AAAUXILIARYUXILIARYUXILIARY N N NEWSEWSEWS Happy New Year! Unit 52 had a wonderful 2007. We recently made

our annual trip to the Fayetteville Veterans’ Hospital; Kay Owens, Flossie Wiesend, Chris Schwartz, and I took over two car loads full of Christmas Cheer gifts and comfort items for the hospitalized Vets. The collection, which was valued at $5720, included 121 lovely lap robes (most of which were handmade by our members), 44 wheelchair cad-dies, 88 puzzles, a box of videos, sweaters and caps and dozens more lovely gifts for the Christmas cheer gift shop, plus a check for $200 to help mail the gifts to the Veterans’ families. We were able to visit 62 Veterans on the wards; each one received a lap robe, in the style and color of their choice. They were so appreciative! Thanks to all of our ladies that worked all year making these lap robes and buying gifts, and those that helped sort it all and stuff it into the cars!

Unit 52 adopted two local families for Christmas, one a single mom with a 3-year-old, the other a young extended family that recently lost their husband/dad/son. An amazing assortment of gifts were donated for both families! Also, in cooperation with Sally Rae, we helped a Christmas Wish family and adopted 2 “angels” from a Salvation Army Angel Tree. What a special way to celebrate Christmas – by giving to those in need. Thank you and God Bless you all – you are wonderful.

The teddy bears we have been collecting all year will be given to State Trooper David Small in January, and the kid-sized hats and gloves will be delivered to the Kindergarten and Nelson-Wilks-Herron school by Sally Rae.

If you have not sent in your membership dues, please get them in as soon as possible. I’d hate to see you lose credit for the years that you have been with the Auxiliary. We are in need of new members. Invite your friends and relatives, of any age, to join us (dues are $15 for ladies over 18, $5 for juniors). We’d love to have them – we do so much for our community and our Veterans.

Your President, Jody McCollom

CHRISTMAS CHEER 2007

Unit 52 members Chris Sch war tz , F loss ie Wiesend, Jody McCol-lom and Kay Owens (clockwise from center) recently delivered 2 car-loads of Christmas Cheer to the VA Medical Center in Fayetteville. The four ladies are shown here with an unidentified hospital vol-unteer (at left) and two of the 8 carts full of comfort items for the Vets and Christmas gifts for the patients’ families.

From now until April 15, Unit 52 will be spon-soring the annual “Project Baby Shower.” The purpose of this program is to provide new baby clothes and accessories to needy mothers of newborns. Anyone wishing to donate items or cash, please drop off at The American Legion Hall and mark it “Attention: Sally Rae.” (You

do not have to be a member of the Auxiliary to donate to this pro-ject.) Everything we collect will be turned over to the Department of Human Services after April 15 for distribution.

At a recent Executive Board meeting, Rod MacLeod brought up the idea of forming a “neighbors network,” similar to the “lifeline” phone tree networks organized by many churches and other social organizations. This would allow our local Legion and Auxiliary members who so desire to take responsibility for checking up on one (or more) other Legion/Aux members, who might live alone or be in failing health. He told of a number of instances where people had been found lying on the floor after several days because no one had checked in on them.

If you would like to participate in a program such as this through the Legion/Aux, either as a caller or a call recipient, please let Rod know. His phone number is 492-4499. If enough members show interest in pursuing this idea, a sign-up form will be placed in the next Bugle, which can be filled out and mailed (or e-mailed) in; a committee will then be organized to match callers with call recipients. The program will be en-tirely voluntary, and all personal information will be kept confi-dential, except as needed by committee members to adminis-ter the network.

Military Funerals for November & December

AAADJUTANTDJUTANTDJUTANT’’’SSS R R REPORTEPORTEPORT We have seven members who have recently transferred into Post 52: James E. McGuire, Robert G. Hoeppner, William P. Greene, Charles Riewer, Franklin D. Roberts, Glenn D. Cerny and Jay S. Shelton.

We would also like to welcome three new members to the Post: Kenneth H. MacLeod, Richard S. Janeck and Joseph L. Smith.

Some recent and upcoming birthdays (that we know about) are: (in De-cember) Paul Wood; William P. Greene; Glenn D. Cerny; Frank F. Hanson; John Demjen; Kay Losiewski; Fran O'Brien ; Don Owens; & Bill Byrne; (in February) Casey Losiewski.

Veterans’ Charities are for Veterans. Yes, almost all local Veterans’ groups do a great job helping Vets. Congress will soon be looking at our national Veterans’ "Groups" and their charitable giving. I believe that Congress should look into the Arkansas Bingo Commission and ask what type of char-ity it is and how much it HELPS Vets.

The American Legion Department of Arkansas will be giving $500 Grants to Veterans with 30% or more disabilities from our latest Wars on Terrorism (1000 grants for the entire nation). For more information you can call the BC Veterans Service Office at 870-425-8155.

Many bills are pending in Congress and almost all need funding. Contact your federal reps or the military could be in big trouble. All our Veterans — in uniform, VA hospitals, and retired — need help.

Keep up with what is happening, be an active member.

Have a Merry Christmas and Joyous New Year.

George Pastove, S.O. 870-425-6162

The Post 52 Honor Guard also participated in the traditional Veterans Day activities on the Plaza downtown.
