PROGRAM NOTESSeveral longstanding campus traditions infuse the
WPI spirit, two of which will be in evidence during
today’s Commencement ceremony.
Crossing Earle Bridge is one of the oldest. To visi-
tors, the bridge is a lovely pathway connecting the east
and west sides of campus. For WPI students, the span
plays a symbolic role at the start and end of their under-
graduate careers. Traditionally, students cross the
bridge as an entire class only twice during their four
years: at Convocation, when they are welcomed as first
year students, and at Commencement, as they process
toward the Quadrangle.
Another tradition involves the WPI seal in the cen-
ter of the Quad. Throughout their four years, under-
grads make a point of walking around the seal, for it is
said that students who step directly on the landmark
won’t graduate on time. That this tradition is upheld is
most evident during the snowy winter months. After
four years of avoidance (not to mention four years of
hard work and intense studying), each graduate will
walk directly over the seal as part of today’s ceremony.
Performing the national anthem this year are seniors
Caroline Concannon, Erika DiLorenzo, Tyler Koloski,
Claude-Reynald LeCorps, Dan Miller, Shelby Miller,
José Navedo, Elizabeth Riendeau, Andrew St. Jean, and
Samantha Varnerin.
The Senior Class Gift is presented by gift committee
chairs Catherine Duffty and Sydney Baker, and com-
mittee member Nesa-Maria Anglin. The Class of 2013
has selected as its gift to WPI a bronze Fighting Goat
statue, for installation on the field side of the Sports &
Recreation Center. Similar in nature to the Proud Goat
statue on the Quad, it will serve as a symbol of deter-
mination to succeed as students, athletes, and alumni.
Student speaker Jean Paul (JP) Miralda ’13 is gradu -
ating with a BS in management engineering with a
mechanical engineering concentration. He is originally
from Tegucigalpa, Honduras.
Academically, he has been recognized as a Presidential
Scholar and an International Scholar since his fresh-
man year and has been on the Dean’s List since his
sophomore year. His project team received the Provost’s
MQP Award from both the School of Business and the
Materials Engineering Program.
Most people recognize JP for his leadership involve-
ment in various organizations on campus. He is the
outgoing president of the Student Government
Association, a brother of Phi Kappa Theta, a tutor in
English and Spanish at the Writing Center, a Crimson
Key tour guide, and a member of Order of Omega,
Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers, and
Omicrom Delta Kappa leadership society.
JP will be joining the Global Operations Leadership
Development (GOLD) Program at Avery Dennison,
working as a global quality engineer.

HONORARY DEGREE RECIPIENTROBERT H. BECKETT ’57DOCTOR OF ENGINEERING
Robert Beckett has always been an entrepreneur at heart. Sowhen he crossed the stage in Alden Memorial in 1957 toreceive his bachelor of science in mechanical engineering, heknew he would start his own business—someday. It would takenearly 20 years to reach that goal.
Beckett grew up in a family of modest means. In highschool he excelled in math, physics, and football. Aftergraduation he attended the Pennington School and wasaccepted to several colleges, but he lacked themeans to pay his way. A visit from WPIfootball coach Charles McNulty convincedhim that he could fulfill his dream of getting acollege education. That visit led to amatriculation scholarship from WPI.
His first job was with Leeds andNorthrup, where he moved up the ladder fromsales to instrumentation development. Whenthe president of K-Tron Inc. called to ask forhelp fashioning a device to measure drymaterial as it passed along a conveyor belt,Beckett and his colleagues created andpatented what would become the first digitalgravimetric belt feeder; this work led to a jobfor Beckett as K-Tron’s vice president of sales and marketing.Beckett went on to become director of original equipmentmanufacturer (OEM) marketing at Decision Data, a companythat made the first buffered punched card peripherals forcomputers. Seeing the enormous potential represented bydesktop computers, Beckett was inspired to finally make theleap from employee to entrepreneur.
At a time when most companies were simply sellingindividual components, Beckett differentiated his company,Robec (the name is derived from his first and last names), byidentifying applications and software tailored to certainindustry segments and customer needs. The result was a nearovernight success. The company, which began with twoemployees in 1978, celebrated its fourth anniversary with astaff of 20 and annual sales of nearly $4 million. Sales jumpedto more than $200 million by year 16, when Robec’s workforceexceeded 400. As president and CEO, Beckett saw his thrivingenterprise make Inc. magazine’s list of the 500 fastest growing
privately held U.S. companies every year from 1984 to 1987.Beckett, himself, was recognized as Entrepreneur of the Year byArthur Young and Venturemagazine in 1988 and inducted intothe Institute of American Entrepreneurs as a lifetime member.
In 1994, he decided to merge Robec with AmeriQuestTechnologies, based on the West Coast, with the aim ofcreating a strong nationwide organization. Beckett served assenior vice president of the combined company until he retired
in 1996. He is currently president and CEO ofTribo Surface Engineering, a company thatenhances the surface properties of materials. He also provides investment capital andmarketing and management services to start-up companies.
Throughout his career Beckett’s ties to hisalma mater have remained steadfast. In 1987the university welcomed him into thePresidential Founders, and the WPI AlumniAssociation honored him with the Robert H.Goddard Alumni Award for OutstandingProfessional Achievement. Over the years hisgifts have helped fund the construction ofseveral buildings, and the Robert H. and
Patricia A. Beckett Scholarship has paid forward the generositythat once opened the doors of opportunities for Beckett, himself.
A trustee for the Pennington School, Beckett served as amember of WPI’s board from 1984 to 2004 and has been anemeritus trustee since then. He chaired the board’sDevelopment Committee and served in leadership roles forseveral fundraising campaigns, including his current role ascampaign co-chair for “If…The Campaign to Advance WPI.”He has served on the WPI Annual Fund board and the WPIAlumni Association Board of Directors. In 2002 WPIpresented him with the Herbert F. Taylor Alumni Award forDistinguished Service to WPI.
For his entrepreneurial vision and courageous spirit, forthe unyielding determination he has demonstrated in hiscareer and life, and for his generous gifts of time and resourcesto his alma mater, WPI is honored to confer upon RobertBeckett the degree of Doctor of Engineering, Honoris Causa.

HONORARY DEGREE RECIPIENTCAROL T. CHRIST
DOCTOR OF HUMANE LETTERS
As a champion of women’s issues and a trailblazer in highereducation, Carol Christ found an invigorating home at SmithCollege, where she has spent more than a decade as its 10thpresident. When she concludes her tenure in June, she willleave behind a lasting mark, one etched by her dedication todiversity, innovation, strategic planning, and global thinking.
The transformative power of education has definedChrist’s life and career. In 1966 she graduated with honorsfrom Douglass Residential College, thewomen’s college of Rutgers University. Sheearned a PhD in English at Yale and in 1970joined the English faculty at the University ofCalifornia, Berkeley. As chair from 1985 to1988, she built one of the nation’s top-rankedEnglish departments. She went on to becomethe university’s first dean of humanities andthen served as provost and dean of the Collegeof Letters and Sciences, vice chancellor andprovost, and executive vice chancellor. In thatlast role she sharpened the institution’sintellectual focus and built top-rateddepartments in the humanities and sciences.
A New York City native, Christ was luredback to the East Coast in 2002 by the opportunity to leadSmith. Working collaboratively and embracing ideas fromcolleagues, the Smith community, and beyond, she hasendeavored to prepare the college for the changes sweepinghigher education. Under her leadership, the school hasexpanded its science curriculum and advanced the onlyaccredited engineering program at a women’s college. Thediversity of the Smith student body has increased dramatically,as has the enrollment of international students andopportunities for studying abroad. Christ instituted “TheSmith Design for Learning: A Plan to Reimagine a Liberal ArtsEducation,” which was devised by the faculty and outsidescholars with the goal of identifying areas of priority for theinstitution’s curriculum. The plan has guided increasedinvestment in global studies, environmental sustainability, andcommunity engagement. Always looking ahead, Christ alsolaunched the Futures Initiative, a strategic project thatanticipated education in 2030 and beyond, positioning Smithfor continued long-term success.
Christ’s imprint has been felt well beyond the physicalboundaries of the college. She’s dedicated herself to expandingSmith’s global presence by forging partnerships such asWomen’s Education Worldwide, a 50-college initiative jointlylaunched with Mount Holyoke College that works to increasefemale access to quality education. She collaborated on theWomen in Public Service Project, a joint effort of leadingwomen’s colleges and the Department of State that works to
invigorate the presence of women in the publicsector. Last year, under Christ’s guidance,Smith accepted a role as academic planningpartner in the Asian Women’s LeadershipUniversity, to be established in Malaysia.
In addition to global work, Christ hasdemonstrated a commitment to her localcommunity by building strong relationshipswith organizations throughout Northampton,Smith’s home city. She has worked withNorthampton’s mayor and residents to addresssuch issues as affordable housing, downtownbusiness improvement, and support for publicschools. ERIC S. LANDERDOCTOR OF SCIENCE
Theory and practice steer the career of Eric Lander, amathematician-turned-geneticist who is revolutionizing theworld's understanding of genes and disease. A pioneer inhuman genetics, Lander helped lead the Human GenomeProject and is now president and founding director of The Eliand Edythe L. Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard, as well asan advisor to President Barack Obama. With immensededication and an unrelenting drive to solve problems, Landerepitomizes the notion that knowledge has thegreatest impact when it is rigorously applied.
Throughout his career, Lander has soughtanswers to fundamental questions about lifeby breaking large, complex biological systemsdown into their smallest constituent parts. That’s what he did at the WhiteheadInstitute/MIT Center for Genome Research, which became a flagship laboratory for theHuman Genome Project. There, Lander andhis team dedicated themselves to mapping thethree billion base pairs that make up thedouble-stranded DNA molecules packed intohuman chromosomes. By working withscientists around the world to deconstruct thecode for the human organism, they helped build a mapscientists can follow to hunt for clues to how we function.
In his current work at The Broad Institute, Lander is usingthat map to chart the role that the genome plays in the biologyof diseases like cancer, diabetes, and inflammatory disorders. The institute is home to a small army of interdisciplinaryscientists who collaborate to apply genome-based science tomedicine. Among their aims is to understand the circuitry ofthe cell and how it influences health and disease; to identify thebiological factors that make us susceptible to disease; and tocatalog mutations that may point to better cancer treatmentsand diagnostic tools.
Lander began his career steeped in theory. He graduatedas valedictorian from Princeton in 1978 with a bachelor'sdegree in mathematics. At the age of 20 he entered OxfordUniversity as a Rhodes Scholar, earning his PhD inmathematics in just two years. Despite his enthusiasm for thefield, he worried that math would be too solitary a discipline.
So Lander set out to balance his love of theory withpractice. He began teaching economics and, on the sidelearned biology, first at Harvard and then at MIT. He loved thecollaborations he was able to forge with the scientists heencountered, and he even found a way to build a bridgebetween his old love and his new flame by applyingmathematical theory to genetic diseases. At age 30 he receiveda “genius” grant from the MacArthur Foundation. It further
solidified his path to becoming one of theforemost experts in genetics.
Lander, who in addition to his post at theBroad Institute, is a professor of biology atMIT, where he’s been on faculty since 1989,and a professor of systems biology at HarvardMedical School, where he’s taught since 2004.He has received well-deserved recognitionfrom his peers, having been elected to theNational Academy of Sciences, the Institute ofMedicine, and the American Academy of Artsand Sciences. In addition to the MacArthurFoundation Fellowship, he has earned suchdistinguished honors as the GairdnerInternational Award and the Max Delbrück
Medal. He has also received the Albany Medical Center Prizein Medicine and Biomedical Research and the New YorkAcademy of Medicine Medal for Distinguished Contributionsin Biomedical Science. Earlier this year he accepted thepresigious Breakthrough Prize in Life Sciences, whichrecognized his work creating powerful methods for finding thebasis of disease.
Lander wields a trusted voice in the public and privatespheres. He has advised numerous agencies, foundations, andbusinesses. In 2008 President Obama appointed him to co-chair the President’s Council of Advisors on Science andTechnology.
For his pioneering work in the field of genetics, hisprofound insights into health and disease, and his lifelongdedication to balancing theory with rigorous practice, WPI ishonored to confer upon Eric Lander the degree of Doctor ofScience, Honoris Causa.

The annual graduation ceremony is an important milestone in the lives of our students and their families. The informationon these pages will help assure this is an enjoyable and memorable event for everyone.
PROCESSIONAL AND RECESSIONAL—The ceremony begins at about 10:30 a.m. with the proces-sional. The marchers line up in front of Boynton Hall in the following order: honorary marshal, the colors, honorary marshal for graduate students, candidates for graduatedegrees, ceremonial marshal, candidates for undergraduatedegrees, faculty members, and the stage party. The processionmoves across Earle Bridge and follows the roadway pastAlden Memorial and Sanford Riley Hall toward the Sportsand Recreation Center, then moves onto the Quadrangle.(Guests are asked to not block the progress of the proces -sional. It is especially important to keep the center aisle clearso marchers may make their way to their seats.)

Alma MaterWillard Hedlund, WPI Class of 1910
Following his graduation in 1910, Willard Hedlund taught civil engineering at WPI until 1913. He later served the city of Worcester as superintendent of public buildings. Hedlund’s original version of the Alma Mater has seen a few changes over the years; these are the lyrics currently sung on the WPI campus.
A second stanza often follows:
As years roll on, and changes bring, To all things great and smallWe still will thee in rev’rance hold, We’ll greet thee, one and allIn accents which no one will doubt, In terms so strong and boldThe world will know thy worth to us Increases many fold. Then here’s to good old Worcester Tech, Come, fellows, join in our refrainWave high the colors crimson and gray, For good old Worcester Tech
