Well, here we are with the new 2014 Cruise schedule and our budget in
place. I’m so excited to get cruising! We’ve got the TOA, Totem and Des
Moines Commodore Balls on the calendar and we’re hoping for a good Viking
presence. Steve has a great lineup and we start with a great cruise agenda in
February. He’s incorporating some new ideas and part of that will be a photo
contest. This fits in with the many sites we will see as we explore
Tacoma. Next is the DMYC Swap meet. Last year we hit some new highs
with donations and sales. Can we do this again? Let’s give it the ole Viking
spirit and pull out some items you’d be willing to donate. Barb and Steve will
both be collecting donations. Immediately following that we will have
Daffodil weekend with all it’s fun and flowers. It’s looking busy but its sure to
be a great year for the club.
March
Greetings from Sunshine in Arizona.
I haven’t heard otherwise so I am assuming
that everyone in the Viking family is well
and looking forward to a great boating
season with friends. Please remember to
keep me in the information loop when you
know of someone who could use a little
cheering up or congratulatory greeting. I
love sending cards!

Vice Robert Bushnell Fellow Vikings,
Now that we are in a new year and January is past us, It’s
time to start thinking about the upcoming boating season so
when it’s time to go boating you are not spending those days
working on your boat. I wrote a good blog on winterizing and
fall maintenance on your boat. You can check it out here
http://searussales.blogspot.com/2013/10/fall-boat-
maintenance-winterizing-your.html keeping your boat
washed and waxed during the winter months will prevent lots
of extra work this spring.
We now have the 2014 VYC budget approved and Steve is in
full swing on scheduling the clubs cruising season. I am
looking forward to spending as much time as possible on the
water this season, which will include trips to Bainbridge
Island, Bell Harbor marina on Seattle’s waterfront, Blake
Island, Poulsbo and other locations. The Club cruises are not
scheduled for those destinations this year but when we plan
going to one of these locations ourselves, we will give a shout
out to others in the club that may want to join us.
This year is our Labor Day weekend at Swantown in
Olympia, traditionally when we go to the south sound for this
cruise; many of us go early to enjoy McMiken Island and
other destinations before heading into Olympia for the fun
weekend.
Congratulations to Carolyn Anspach for being nominated for
this year’s Sweetheart

The 2014 Cruise Calendar is official! Flyer is in this issue of
the LUR! Hopefully all of our members and their friends will
have an opportunity to join us this year! We still need a cruise
captain for the July 4th
Anchor Out in Burton.
First up, Rock the Dock Shake Down Cruise on the Thea Foss
Waterway. It is close enough for everyone to join in and explore
our own backyard. See the flyer in this edition of the LUR for all
the details of an action packed Valentine’s weekend! One of the
features will be a Photo Contest where you will submit your
digital photos in one or more of the following categories: Selfie,
Architecture, Scenery, Wildlife, and People. Remember moorage
is first come, first served (no reservations); however, I would
appreciate you contact me with the # of people in your party, so I
can be fully prepared! The Viking Yacht Club Sweetheart’s
Dinner is on February 22nd
at Johnny’s in Fife. This is a regular
club meeting, but the business agenda will be kept to a minimum
so we can fully celebrate our current and past Sweethearts! Be
sure to make your reservations by calling or emailing me.
The first Ball of the season is Tacoma Outboard Association
Commodore Ball honoring Commodore Rick Axlen and First Mate Lisa on February 1
st. I encourage all our members to
support our Commodore Tracy and Carolyn by attending. It is
always a fun evening with dinner and dancing!
March 22nd
the Vikings will be at the Des Moines Marine Swap
Meet. This is a major fundraiser to support our club functions
this year. With your donations we can turn your spare parts and
boating accessories and your useful but no longer needed boating
stuff in to cash for our club! If you have anything to donate or
wish volunteer your time to help, please contact me! We need
lots of “stuff” to sell and have booths inside and outside. All
items not sold will be donated to charity, unless indicated that
you want it returned to you after the swap meet.
MARK YOUR CALENDAR!
General meetings will take place at Johnny’s in Fife on the
4th
Wednesday of each month through April. May’s
meeting will take place on the Memorial Day cruise.

National Boating Federation News: If you plan to GO OFFSHORE – (Great Lakes, Atlantic, Pacific, and the Gulf of Mexico) – consider taking an EPIRB and PLB. It could save your life! An Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon (EPIRB) is used to alert search and rescue services in the event of an emergency. It does this by transmitting a coded message on the 406 MHz distress frequency to a satellite that is then relayed by earth stations to the nearest rescue coordination center within moments of activation. EPIRBs that are equipped with a built-in GPS enables the rescue sources to more accurately identify your position and respond to the emergency.
Personal Location Beacons (PLB) are another type of 406 MHz emergency
signaling devise. Usually smaller than an EPIRB, these devices are designed for individual personal use. There are many models available and functions can vary. These are not recommended for maritime use unless they are fully waterproof and can be submerged.

Focus on Marinas: This month is Longbranch Marina.
The Longbranch landing remained in service until the late 1930’s when the new Tacoma Narrows Bridge made ferry service obsolete. The county commissioners refused to
lease county tidelands and ferry dock to a private, for-profit venture, commenting, “if anyone is depriving the public of facilities to which the public is entitled, the practice
should be stopped.” Members of the LIC rallied support for a new public pier.
The county engineers supplied plans for a suitable floating dock, but had no funds for such a project. The LIC called upon its members for cedar and fir logs, sawmilling,
labor and cash donations. By late spring of 1959, the LIC had built and attached a 168-foot floating pier to the county’s dock. Later that year, the county commissioners
praised the LIC for its initiative in providing a much-needed facility.
By 1981, the county’s desire for a marine park in the area and the LIC’s continued willingness to operate such a facility led to a formal agreement. The lease specified public
access to the facility and allowed members of the LIC reserved moorage. In 1992, the LIC was granted additional easement in consideration of recreational use by the public,
the public general welfare and the county’s desire to provide public access to marina facilities.
With two-thirds of the floating dock dedicated to public moorage, the Longbranch Marina provides residents and visiting boaters a unique recreational facility, at no cost to
taxpayers. Following the policy of regional state and county marine facilities, guest moorage is allotted on a first-come basis. In 2005, the Marina moored over 1500 boats
overnight with hundreds more day users, who use the facility for fresh water, garbage disposal and restrooms, all at no cost to taxpayers.
