We are having a slow go into summer with the weather but we remain positive.
Westrec gave out free concert tickets to see Kenny Chesney, Miranda Lambert, Chase Rice and Brant-ley Gilbert at Soldier Field, June 6th. Many thanks to Scott Stevenson.
The 77th Fleet review was held on June 13th. We had a bright sunny day for the event. Past Commodore Jerry Metzger was Master of Ceremony. Rickover Naval Academy Color Guard with Chief Thomas did the flag rising along with Pledge of Allegiance. The Bagpipes of the Emerald Society CPD did the me-morial for members who have recently passed. Fr. Joel Fortier from Christ the Servant Catholic Church blessed the fleet. Past Commodores were also recognized for their years of service to the Club. I had presented Charlie Martin with the Past Com-modore Flag. Charlie did a wonderful job as Commo-dore for 2014.
Fleet Review, parade of boats, was held at 5:30 pm. U.S. Coast Guard Boat, Chicago Police Marine Unit and Chicago Fire Marine Unit and several mem-bers had their boats in the parade. The cannon was shot off for each and every boat that passed, it was beautiful to watch. Thanks to everyone who participated in the parade.
The Fleet Review continued the party in the dining room with a delicious buffet and Sharon Lewis sing-ing the blues. Of course the Hawks game was on in the bar & galley with everyone cheering them on – Hawks won!! Congratulations!!
I would like to thank Steve Theis for all the work he did on the Fleet Review. Steve organized the whole event and did a fantastic job! Gigi also worked along with Steve in finalizing the event. Thank you both for all you did for the Flag of 2015.
The Club has welcomed 24 new members this year. June 20th is the last open houses held from 12-3pm, please come to the Club and meet more potential new members.
Women’s Auxiliary is sponsoring a self-defense class Thursday, June 25th. A painting class is being held on June 27th. Please RSVP.
Thank you to the Women’s Auxiliary and President Bonnie Riordan for the curtains in the chart room. They still have finishing touches to do but so far it has made the chart room much sunnier.
We appreciate Paulette Horne for putting in her time to plant flowers and bushes and Phil Edwards donation of mulch. The
landscaping looked terrific for the Fleet Review.
Thank you to everyone who attended the Fleet Re-
view. I appreciate the support that was given to the
new Flag: Jim Gentile, Scott Broderick, Keith Moore,
Chris Edmonds and myself. I have had a great team
since November and the support they have given me
is tremendous. Thank you to my Flag!!

If Mother Nature would stop blowing out of the North with her cold temperatures and the “April Showers” would finally stop sometime in June, we could finally really get down to the business of boat-ing.
A big congratulations to the CHICAGO BLACKHAWKS as NHL Stanley Cup Champions for 2015. Three in the last six years is a dynasty if there ever was one. Jan and I actually had Oduya, Kruger and Nordstrom on the boat along with Kane. Those kids can party. I’m working on getting some social memberships out of it!
COMMITTEE REPORTS:
HOUSE: Small projects continue but as a whole, all looks great.
MEMBERSHIP AND MARKETING: Our last of three OPEN HOUSES would have taken place (Saturday 6/20/15) by the time you get this. Hopefully, we will have a bunch of new members. We have already 24 new members, and we are only in June.
DOCK and GROUNDS: Everything looks wonderful with the flow-ers, fresh mulch and patio couches.
SAIL FLEET/REGATTA: The Wednesday evening races are un-
derway. The Waukegan race took place this past weekend and the St. Joe Race was also completed. There are many more rac-es to come of which BPYC Members are actively involved. Any-one who wishes to crew can easily get on board any number of our members sailboats.
PARK RELATIONS: The Club continues to follow up with the Merit Concert Pavilion to try and keep our Club safe and not over-run by zealous concert goers. We should all make notes on our calendars with regards to traffic and parking during concert week-ends.
Everyone should pick up and look at the Club’s Social Calendar. Copies are on the glass case at the Club. There are so many fun and informative activities already scheduled. Participate and have some fun. Get to know our new members.
See you at the Club,
Chris Edmonds

Can’t believe it is almost the end of June. Certainly the weather has not cooperated this year as we had hoped. We did luck out for 77th annual Fleet Review, the weather cooperated and we had a great afternoon. Hats off to our Power Fleet Captain, Gigi and our staff for a great job in setting up and orchestrating the event.
We have several great events coming up over the next couple of months. Keep your eye on the calendar and The Breeze. We have added a link to the calendar in the weekly issue of The Breeze.
The club survived another mandatory evacuation from First Mer-ritt Bank as the thunder storms over took the city Saturday Night. Thank you to the members that step up and assisted in this chal-lenging situation. You have concert goers that have just been informed to seek cover, while that cover is almost a ½ mile away
in the northern parking garage of Soldier Field, some seek shelter via our club. Several members stepped up and made a difficult time a little easier.
The Harbor Challenge will be the “Dead” concert over the July 4th weekend. CPD has made known that if you do not have a boat-er’s pass you will not get into the harbor. Make sure you have your parking pass and any of your family or friends have any ex-tras you plan on handing out. It does not sound like you will be able to meet them.
Have a happy and safe fourth!

How about those BlackHawks?!?!
Members had a great time watching and celebrating their wins at the club; which made a couple of the previously scheduled enter-tainment events challenging, but many of us checked in on the game, or heard the cheers, as we enjoyed the music and enter-tainment of Sharon Lewis and the Texas Fire. She is one great entertainer!
Next year, we’ll be sure to allow for some Stanley Cup Playoff dates – so they can keep the Cup in Chicago!
There is a painting party this Saturday, the 27th, at 7:00 p.m.. If
you are planning on attending, we do need reservations so the artist brings enough supplies. This will be a lot of fun – hope to get both ladies and gentlemen there. The flier is attached.
July
Johnny V will be playing on Friday, July 10th starting at 7:30.
The Boater’s Rendezvous is July 31st – August 2nd. Details to follow.

Join us on Thursday June 25th for the annual self defense class. We begin at 6p with an appetizer offering with wine / tap beer. The seminar to follow at 6:30. Call GiGi or email [email protected]. You can make your reservation for only $25. This is not for women only. Men can and do join us. You may be surprised at some if the techniques you can learn. Jeff is a master of martial arts and has over 20 yrs. experience.
If you missed our seminar, wait for it.... we will have another one in the Fall. Thank you to Joyce Durante for allowing her husband, club member and Master Boat Mechanic, John Staniszewski to deliver a dynamic seminar on impellers. He touched on several other areas of engines and general boat maintenance. The semi-nar was well attended. John took his time in addressing each question until even I could gasp the knowledge.
The auxiliary has stocked the ladies room with shampoos lotions sprays and general needs to help calm the busy life of our boating ladies. Thank you to Marcella Cimino for donating the strength-
eners. We noticed a few of the items in the bathroom like the makeup remover have walked away. Please remember these are for the good of the club to share. We hope these items help when you are in a pinch and forget this or that. If things disap-pear they wouldn't be there for you or anyone to share.
July will be a quiet month for the auxiliary. We are all starting to enjoy out boats and the weather promises to cooperate. Let's enjoy boating in July.
Stay tuned for the next events as we roll them out. If you would like to learn more about how you can become a part if the auxilia-ry or our mission simply email [email protected].
Looking forward seeing you around the club.

So you’ve got an anchor……what do you do with it?????
With the upcoming big events in Chicago like July 4th and the Air and Water Show along with the regular weekly fireworks display that we are lucky enough to have here, we wanted to give a little info to all the boaters about the proper way to anchor your boats.
So let’s talk about proper anchoring and how to do it. First off your anchor has to be attached to something….you would be surprised how many people forget to attach a line to their anchor and toss the anchor overboard. You should also make sure that the other end of the line is attached to something as well, this way you won’t let all of the line out inadvertently. Typically you should have a short (length should be approximately ½ to full length of your boat) galvanized chain at-tached to your anchor and attached to the chain should be a three strand nylon line. Nylon line stretches and this reduces the load on your anchor.
A few things to keep in mind when selecting a location to anchor are: look for an area with little current, areas protected from weather and from the wake from any passing crafts. You should also keep in mind that your vessel will drift with the wind, and you should make sure that you leave enough swing dis-tance from any other vessels in the area. Another important thought to keep in mind when choosing a place to anchor is not to put your-self in a location where many other boats are transiting. In the Chicago Harbor area, that would be areas near the breakwall gaps around the “Play Pen” area.
Before anchoring your boat, make sure that you inform your crew what you need them to do, so there is no confusion with the in-structions and if you will be using hand signals because of the noise.
When you have picked your spot to anchor, make sure that you point your bow into the wind, stop your boat, check again to make sure that there is plenty of swing room in all directions, now slowly
lower your anchor (never throw) over the bow to the bottom. Be-fore lowering the anchor, make sure that you have stopped all forward movement, otherwise you risk having your line get tan-gled in your propeller.
Once you have the anchor on the seabed, put your engine in re-verse, backing up steadily, until you feel the anchor dig in (to feel the anchor dig in, the line needs to be secured to a cleat on the boat)letting out the line until your reach the predetermined amount of line. The wave size and the wind strength will deter-mine the scope. Anchors hold better when the pull on the anchor is parallel to the bottom; letting out approximately ten times as much line as the depth of the water usually will work well. Make
sure you tie off the line around the bow cleat and pull on the line to make sure the anchor is secure.
While anchored, it is important to make sure that you are not drag-ging. To do this pick two objects on the beam that form a range to make sure that you are not dragging. Once you have anchored and picked your two objects be sure to check regularly to make sure that your anchor has not begun to drag. This is especially important in an area like the “Play Pen” where there are so many boats in a small area.
Anchors Aweigh……
When you are ready to leave, begin pulling the line up while mov-ing the boat over the anchor. Again you don’t want to get your line caught in your propeller. When the anchor breaks loose from the bottom, stop the boat and immediately retrieve it, pulling it on board. Do not drag it behind your boat.
Hopefully you have enjoyed your day and are ready for your next
sunny day adventure wherever you boat takes you!!!
