1 MAY 2013 Commodore’s Report – David Morton As I begin this months column, I am ~35,000 over the Baja peninsula on my way to Cabo. This is our first trip to this part of Mexico and we are really looking forward to a week + in the sun with friends. While we are underway I am staring out at the Sea of Cortez/Eastern side of Baja and wondering about boating in this part of the world. While the Salish Sea (still feels strange saying that) has some of the world's best cruising grounds, at this moment I am feeling a strong attraction towards the blue/green waters below and the rugged Baja coastline. From what up here, I can see a smattering of marinas and the occasional white tail of a boat underway. I can almost picture our Scottie dog on the bow as the dolphins dance in our wake. While the tropical waters definitely have an appeal, I am finding that my thoughts are drifting ahead to the upcoming boating season here in the northwest. There is something magical about plying our cool waters. Maybe it's the contrast between winter's clouds and the deep blue of the summer sky or maybe it is the inherent beauty of our coastline. Regardless, I am looking forward to the months ahead on the water. An Epic Opening Day We came back from sunny warm Mexico to an equally sunny and nearly as warm Seattle. It was a perfect day to kick off the start of boating season. Look elsewhere in this issue to find a handful of pictures from this year's festivities. You can also see them on our web site by visiting http://www.pugetsoundyc.org/pics/OD2013/ . Opening Day in Seattle is an almost sacred celebration that is one part ceremony, one part competition and 3 parts PARTY. Seattle Yacht Club does a great job of laying the groundwork for a PSYC style celebration. Marcia Ellingson and crew made sure that we had everything we needed to celebrate in style. They turned the club into a tropical paradise, complete with palm trees and Hawaiian Tiki gods. They kicked off the party with a traditional Puka Dogs. I can't say if I've ever had a Puka Dog before, but I sure enjoyed the chili covered dog served hot off the grill. The weather was spectacular and we all enjoyed the evening on the PSYC docks. Dan Grey sponsored the cold keg of beer and we all had a wonderful time. As with any good party we had some surprise guests and even a bit of drama. The former began with a surprise visit from members of the Poulsbo Yacht Club. The latter came as we watched a boat being towed back to the boat ramp. Throw in an inappropriate close call by a Duck boat and the next thing we knew, one of the boats was out of control and heading towards the boats on our dock. As we rushed to assist (and protect the boats) we found that the skipper had fallen in the lake while his first mate was struggling to control the boat. With Kevin Haistings and Mad Dog fending off from Shifting Gears, I was able to jump aboard and found the boat was stuck in reverse. After turning off the boat's engine, we quickly had it secured and everyone was safe. The distressed boaters soon joined the party while Patrick and Mad Dog helped them find the problem. While the problem wasn't immediately repairable, should the couple join the club, they will be the second nominees for the duck flag so far this weekend. The next morning things started early with the Past Commodore's breakfast, with our most recent PC, Peggy Allen, leading the charge. While breakfast was underway at the club, your intrepid commodore and first mate were enduring a grueling

Commodore’s Report – David Morton

As I begin this months column, I am ~35,000 over the Baja peninsula on my way to Cabo. This is our first trip to this part of Mexico and we are really looking forward to a week + in the sun with friends. While we are underway I am staring out at the Sea of Cortez/Eastern side of Baja and wondering about boating in this part of the world. Commodore’s Report – David Morton Continental breakfast while waiting to participate in the SYC opening ceremony. Both the weather and the ceremony were beautiful. At 10 am, it was time to officially launch the start of the boating season with our own flag raising. Paula Spina was our MC whose address was a good mix of tradition and good humor. VIPs from the SeaBacs Yacht Club, numerous PSYC past commodores, your bridge, members and guests were in attendance for the ceremony. Pat Hansen and Peggy Allen assisted with raising the flags, while Lance Loomis provided the music. Now that boating season was officially open, it was time for members to disperse and enjoy the day's activities. The bridge was headed to the Officer's parade boat, Sea Moore. A warm thank you to Garry and Sharon Moore for their hospitality and use of their boat. Other members headed out to the log boom or other areas while Patrick and crew put the finishing touches on Narnia. After an emergency, on-the-water rendezvous between SeaBacs and Sea Moore (we forgot glasses for our onboard margaritas), we heard the loud beating of drums drifting across the water. At first I thought it was the Husky Band, but I quickly saw that we were being overtaken by a dark, Hawaiian magic ghostship. As Narnia made it way across Portage Bay, crowds were waving and cheering. Our decorated boat was clearly a hit with the crowd. I heard the same thing said by several people at the SYC awards and closing ceremony. After a long, beautiful day on the water, members made their way back to the club for PUPUs and cocktails. I know that everyone enjoyed the spread and drinks. Dinner was set to begin at 6 PM; unfortunately this conflicted with SYC closing ceremony and awards. While I missed the formal portion of dinner, I heard many comments about how good everything

was and they made certain that a plate was saved for my return. While I was representing PSYC at the closing ceremony, several people came up to tell me how much they enjoyed our decorated boat. While we didn't end up winning a prize, it was clear that we made a big impact on the day. SYC Admiralette Gina caught me before I left to tell me exactly that. She also said how much she and her crew were enjoying the PSYC Cookbooks that they picked when visiting us in February. She said that they have already tried and enjoyed several recipes. While I didn't come back with a trophy in hand, I was very happy to come back to the club to report the evening's accolades with club. After dinner many of us retired out onto the docks enjoying the music from the DJ, Mai Tais and pleasure of each other's company. The dinner crew was expecting up to 70 folks for dinner and dancing, due in part, to a last minute rush. Marcia's quick thinking crew even ran out to purchase another pork loin to make sure that there was enough for everyone. Unfortunately the actual turn out for dinner and dancing as lower than expected. I suspect that too much sun and the enjoyment of the day's activities contributed to the decline. Still everyone in attendance had a great time and it was a perfect way to crown a perfect day.  Before I close, I would like to again thank everyone who played a part in making this year's opening day celebration so special. I'd also like to recognize and thank my lovely wife for all of her help. For those of you who didn't make it to this year's event, you really missed out. This is one of the premiere events of the year and the weather hasn't been this nice for opening day in at least two decades. Fair winds and following seas to all for the remainder of this season.

on  out  and  take  advantage  of  the  great  facility  we  have.    We  got  a  nice   reminder   from  the  Leukemia   and   Lymphoma   Society  announcing   their   19th   annual  Leukemia   Cup   Regatta   on   June  8th.    Visit  www.leukemiacup.org/wa  to  find   out   how   you   can   help   with  this   great   charity.   If   you   are   not  going   to   the   Port   Ludlow   Cruise,  join  the  party  at  Elliot  Bay  Marina  for   a   BBQ   dinner,   beer,   wine   &  Gosling's   Rum   drinks,   live   music  by   The   Tropics,   an   auction,   the  awards  ceremony  and  more.    See  you  at  the  Club,  Bradley  Byrd

And  what  a  parade  it  was—with  so  many   boats   out   there,   you  would  think   all   the  marinas   in   the  North  West   must   have   been   emptied  out.   I   know   everyone   else   wrote  about   the   dinners   and   the   dance,  but   I   did   want   to   mention   the  decorations.   I’ve   never   seen   the  clubhouse  look  so  great!  Thanks  to  Marcia  Ellingson  and  her   crew   for  making  it  look  so  stunning.  Now   that   the   season   is   open   (for  some   of   us   it   never   closes)   it’s  time   to   fire   up   the   grills   and   chill  the  drinks  for  the  first  Dock  Friday  of   the   year.   I’ll   be   donning   the  apron  and  grilling  up  some  burgers  for   a   backyard-‐type   grill-‐out   on  May   31st   starting   at   around   5.  Traditionally   you   get   your   burger,  chips,  and  a  drink  for  $5,  so  come

What   a  wonderful  Opening  Day!  For  the  eight  years  we  have  lived  in   Seattle,   I   never   understood  why   anyone   got   excited   about   a  drizzly,   blustery   day   like   all  Opening   Days   have   been   until  now.  Suddenly,   it  all  made  sense  last   Saturday   when   there   was  only   sparkling   sunshine   the  entire   weekend.   As   usual,   the  PSYC  put  on  a  great  show  with  a  great   breakfast   followed   by   the  flag   raising   ceremony.   Paula  Spina  led  the  ceremony  with  just  the   right   amount   of   fun   and,  well,   of   course,   ceremony.  Sharon   and   Garry   Moore   took  the   Bridge   aboard   their   home,  the   Sea  Moore,   and  we   traveled  in   style   while   waiting   for   and  then  participating   in   the   parade.

Hello  Members    What  a  couple  of  weeks  we  have  had!  On  April  27  we  had  the  Spring  Work  Party  and  man  it  was  a  Party.  We  had  pizza  and  lots  of  beer,  Oh  yeah,  we  worked  too.  The  club  looked  great  for  the  opening  of  boating  season  and  I  could  have  not  been  prouder  of  all  of  the  help!  We  weeded  the  front  beds,  changed  a  lot  of  lights  that  were  burnt  out  and  cleaned  the  A  room.    I  even

Ellingson  and  their  crew  for  putting  on  a  great  opening  festivities  for  the  2013  boating  season!  The  food  was  great  and  the  club  house  looked  like  I  was  in  Hawaii,  so  thank  you!  Last  but  not  least,  thank  you  Paula  for  doing  such  a  great  job  for  the  opening  day  ceremony.    Mike  Thompson  Vice  Commodore  2013  PSYC

saw  Paula  on  her  knees  too!  The  back  of  the  club  was  pressured  washed  by  Bill  Allen,  Garry  Moore  and  Joyce  Carlson.  The  galley  was  gone  through,  and  all  of  the  BBQ's  were  cleaned,  and  I  learned  a  new  way  how  to  open  a  bottle  of  beer.  On  Wednesday  I  painted  the  front  and  back  stairs  as  it  looked  like  it  was  going  to  rain  on  Saturday  for  the  work  party.  Kevin  Carlson  and  John  Orr  helped  me  with  the  dock  benches,  they  came  out  quite  well  (he  means  the  benches,  not  John  and  Kevin…  editorial  comment)

I  want  to  thank  Marcia  and  Barry

Fleet Captain’s Report Joyce Carlson

i KINGSTON CRUISE Great Cruise!!

Paul Devlin promised sunshine for this cruise—we got fifteen (15) minutes! Just kidding. But it was a mix of sun and clouds. We really didn’t get too much rain. Our Cruise Captains kept us busy with snacks Friday night to start before nearly everyone headed over to the restaurant for a meal. Ugh! Saturday John Orr brought out his Holey Board and others played games at the Clubhouse. Saturday night we had Margaritas with a delicious Mexican dinner with all the fixin’s before the “big game” of Bunco. The game was faster this year and most of us got a chance to play with nearly everyone who was playing. Our Cruise Captains outdid themselves and we owe our thanks to them!
