Thanks to our loyal sponsors: T he good summer weather continues and the number of boats out enjoying this is evidenced by the number of empty moorings in the river. The yard is also looking quite empty which suggests that maintenance activities are on hold while the good weather is here. On the works front, repairs were completed on the ramp during January to fix some holes. Several piles are scheduled to be replaced during March which will get us up to date with the pile replacement programme. Other projects under investigation by the works committee include the repair of the main wharf pontoon and the replacement of the roof over the deck area. Further planning is required on how we can complete the remaining ramp repairs (above the waterline) now that council funding is no longer available. Membership is growing steadily and now stands at 288 members. The number of unallocated moorings has also decreased such that we now only have four spare. Good work by Katie on these two areas. You should all have received by now a letter from me regarding the need to limit any noise generating activities around the club to certain hours as agreed with the Auckland council. Cmodes Rept These conditions are part of our lease renewal and are a combination of what we already have as resource consents and what the council now expects of activities in residential areas. Whilst we have existing resource consents for the yard and the shed, the maximum noise levels permitted in those consents is less than the level of noise emanating from the yard when a power tool is in use. Abiding by the points raised in my letter is not a guarantee that noise complaints will cease or that we can return to the way it was. The local neighbours need to be shown that we are serious about being good neighbours as is required in the terms of our lease. If you have not yet read this letter then I encourage you to do so as any breach could have consequences for all club members. THE WILDTHINGS COSTAL CLASSIC REPORTLABOUR WEEKEND 2014

After weeks of preparation, we arrived at Westhaven at 7am on a drizzly Friday – race day! The realization that we needed a blue race had dawned on the car trip down, so after being dropped off a quick dash on foot in thermals by our skipper Mathew to Burnsco was necessary.

Leaving our marina berth at 8:45am, we made our way into the harbor with a myriad of other yachts. We sailed past the committee boat to do our pass-by then jockeyed for position for the race start at 9:30am. We had a great start, ending up right on the line with a good place near the front of the fleet on the Devonport wharf side. We began the race conservatively with a full main and no. 1 genoa as many other yachts showed their spinnaker finery.

Once around North Head, we gybed, put up the spinnaker and headed for Tiri on a straight broad reach. It was gusty with plenty of round-ups around us. The Wildthing had her share of round-ups too as we may have been overpowered at this point. Fourth time Coastal Classic veteran Lachie (12), tucked himself into the pushpit but forgot to reposition himself during one round-up and ended up underwater briefly. We averaged 10kts to Tiri as all the big Division One and Six boats came spectacularly flying past.

Shortly after Tiri, Witchy Woman slid past us to starboard. We continued on our course and hit our top speed of 11.6kts. However during one round-up the spinnaker got caught between the spreader and the main causing a small tear. We quickly dropped it and put up the no. 2 spinnaker while Kaine and I did a fast repair job on the rip. Jevon gave me a quick lesson in spinnaker packing theory and I took on the role with gusto – no pressure! Our media liaison, Tracey continued to keep our progress updated throughout the race.

We held the no. 2 all the way to Cape Rodney until the wind went light and swung west. We then dropped the spinnaker and put up the no. 1 genoa and sailed for the inside of the Hen and Chicks. 20 minutes later the wind picked up to 25kts on this course. Jevon and Kaine ran the foredeck smoothly with only the required amount of yelling. Steve provided manpower on the main sheet and traveller.

We rehoisted the no. 2 spinnaker just after the Hen and Chicks as the wind backed round to the southwest and sailed with this setup all the way to Cape Brett.

Most of the fleet chose a route outside the Hen and Chicks, but we continued on our course with a few other boats from our division near us. It was great to see Cape Brett during daylight hours even if it was from a distance.

We snuck through the gap at Cape Brett at 10:15pm and sailed hard on the wind at 6 to 7 knots of boat speed into the Bay of Islands just going to port off Whale Rock. Then the wind dropped right out and we tacked slowly towards the finish with many boats around us. Sometimes it felt like we were actually going backwards! We finally drifted over the finishing line at 1:47am.

A very successful race with the only minor damage being a bent stanchion and a few bolts sheared off on the steering bearing housing. After a few celebratory drinks, the crew found various places to sleep around the boat at about 6am for a quick snooze. Then at 10am we woke up for a well-deserved fry-up for breakfast. As a Coastal Classic newbie, it was a great race. Good winds, good company and after putting it off for the last seven years, I might even do the race again – maybe…

Racing Activities Update February 2015

It has been a mixed bag as far as the racing is concerned where we seem to be in a pattern of getting either too much wind or not enough.

The planned race to Great Barrier on Waitangi day had to be diverted to an alternate destination of Man O War Bay because of the high winds and rough seas. Only three boats took part after a number of entrants dropped off on the day. All boats finished in just over 3½ hours which must be a record for this course (24.5 miles). The cruising series has now completed five races: the first Friday night race had to be delayed till the Saturday due to high winds; the second race was a combined race with GH to Waiheke where a fleet of 16 boats started, with GH taking the overall honours. Race 3 was a Friday night race to Islington Bay with a good breeze and most entrants finishing within 3 hours. Race 4 to Kawau was shortened at Tiri channel due to insufficient wind. Race 5 to Mahurangi on anniversary weekend was also a Friday night race but was somewhat drawn out due to a dying breeze at the finish line. Next race is on 20th February, start time 6.30 pm. Our thanks to Marine Solutions at Gulf Harbour for their support of this series. The Barfoot & Thompson 2-handed series has now completed 5 races with the final race on 1st March. Although not as many entries as last year (11 so far) this still makes a reasonable sized fleet. The Short-handed series has now completed 5 races with race 6 scheduled for the 15th March, which is a single-handed race. Thanks to Cargills Marine for their support of this series.

Winter Series Report by Kerry Davies - Flasher

On the serious racing front, the Winter Series, combined with Gulf Harbour Yacht Club, has again been a great success with 28 boats entering in the racing.

There was certainly a lot of competition and it was very enjoyable being out there sailing against such enthusiastic teams. The trend for light weather carried through from the summer for a good number of the races, a great benefit for those with boats that do well in those conditions and also causing some interesting results and shortened course situations.... There was quite a diversity of boats entered this season, and also three woman Skippers taking part! In the White Division, the two Platu 25s from Gulf Harbour Yacht Club placed well in most races, taking first and second in the series for that Division, with Planet X in third place.Unitec had a very good run in the Gold Division, easily winning the Gold Division Series, while there was fierce competition in the rest of the fleet and also between the five Marauders entered. Southern Rebel took second place and Flasher came in third. The light conditions did eventually run out around the end of the series causing the last two races to be abandoned and cancelled due to too much wind. Thanks to our sponsor (Wet & Forget) for their generous support of this series. The winter series is looming with race 1 scheduled for 10th May. You still have time to get all those little jobs done and get a crew organised for this series.

Objective: display a line on a chart plotter to indicate a finish line (or a start line if desired)Approach: Add additional points to the end of a route such that it displays as an integral part of the route. This requires 3 additional points.

• Defineawaypointatthecentreofthefinishline. This will be used as your destination for calculation of arrival times etc.• Fromthispointaddafurthertwopointsforthe ends of the finish line.

This will display a line on the chart plotter you can use to verify you have crossed the finish line. Appropriate levels of zoom will help refine the accuracy of the crossing.Example: Cruising course 5 to Mahurangi.Other considerations:1. If you use this route in the reverse direction then you will need to skip the first few waypoints.2. The total course length will now include the extra length of the finish line. In the above example the course length would be from the start to mark C5.

* All the above coordinates are given in the WBC cruising supplement, available from the website.
