What are the Common Core State Standards?

ELA and Mathematics Standards that represent a set of expectations for student knowledge and skills (K – 12) that high school graduates need to succeed in college and careers.

• Developed by the States

• Adopted formally by 45 states(NY adopted and calls Common Core Learning Standards)

• Emphasis on College and Career Readiness

Have the Common Core Learning Standards (CCLS) for ELA and Mathematics replaced the former NYS standards in those

subject areas?

Yes.  The Board of Regents adopted the new CCLS for ELA and Literacy and forMathematics in January, 2011.  The CCLS will be phased in over the next year. Beginning in school Year 2012‐2013, state assessments for English Language Arts and Mathematics will measure student achievement of the P‐12 CCLS.

In New York State, all Grades 3 – 8 English and Mathematics state assessmentswill measure achievement of the new P‐12 CCLS in the 2012‐2013 school year.

Six Shifts in ELA/Literacy:

Page 7: Common Core State Standards & Science - Half Hollow Hills ... · Shifts Simplified: 4)Text‐Based Answers: •Research indicated that many of the questions on assessments did not

Shifts Simplified:

1) Balancing Informational & Literary Text:• More informational text in grades PK‐5

2) Building Knowledge in the Disciplines (6‐12):• Require History & Science teachers to take a strong role in educating childrento gain knowledge through reading and writing.• Share the responsibility with the ELA teachers.• Practicing scientists spend half their time reading!!• “I write to know what I think.” (Joan Didion)

3) Staircase of Complexity:• Level of text complexity needs to increase each year.• Teachers must make time in the curriculum to incorporate reading complex

text.

Shifts Simplified:

4)Text‐Based Answers:•Research indicated that many of the questions on assessments did not require students to read the text itself.•Answers should reflect a close, careful analysis of the text.

5) Writing from Sources:• Less narrative writing (What you think, How you feel, Your opinion)• More writing to argue and inform.

6) Academic Vocabulary:• Domain-specific vocabulary is still important (ameba, cell wall).• Greater focus on crucial vocabulary that is seen and utilized across the

various disciplines (Subsequent, Theory, Evidence, Hypothesis).

Examples of Assignments/Assessments Aligned to Common Core:

Grade 10: Ecology•Summary of an Invasive Species article (Burmese Python)

•Students will read an article on an invasive species. They will be asked to summarize the text in a formal style and answer the following questions:

1)Based on the article, cite two possible reasons for the decline in themammal populations in the Everglades?

2)What does Michael Dorcas mean when he says that “local” animals are “naïve”?

3)According to the article, The U.S. and Wildlife Agency has made it illegal to importBurmese pythons. Why won’t this help the Everglades? What is the purpose of theban?

Grade 9: Scientific Inquiry

• Scientific Method Lab

• Students will perform a multistep procedure while carrying out an experiment. They will follow the procedures by reading the text. They will then produce aclearly written informative conclusion to support they understand the majorconcepts.

• Comparing and Contrasting in Ecology

• Students will read about weather, climate, food webs, and food chains. TheStudents will then be asked to compose a 2 paragraph reading response comparing And contrasting: weather and climate, food webs and food chains. Students will beRequired to cite from the text to support their explanations.

Grade 10: Evolution

•“The Peppered Moth – An Update”, by Ken Miller

•Text-Based Questions:1)According to the text, what were some of Majerus’s criticisms ofKettlewell’s research?

2)Why does Ken Miller refer to the peppered moth story as, “incomplete”?

3)According to the text, list 3 principles that Majerus, Kettlewell, and Miller would all agree on.

4)Using specific information from the text, explain how Kettlewell’s ideas about the change in populations of moths directly relates to natural selection.

Common Core & Science:

• Embed informational text into your science curriculum.

• Literacy is not taking the place of science content or hands‐onlaboratory skills.

• Require students to cite from text to support their conclusions.

• Provide text with two or more points of view, and ask students tochoose a side and support with research.

• Ask students to define vocabulary in context from the text.
