Androutsos was a controversial military figure at the heart of the Greek War for Independence: an early member of the Filiki Eteria (Society of Friends), he was a key member of the Greek insurgency against the Ottomans, but became a rival of other pro-Greek factions and was briefly accused of collusion with the Turks before assuming control of the military forces in East-Central Greece. It was he who led the forces that took control of the Acropolis in September 1822 and who built a bastion there to protect their water supply. The author, Papadopoulos, was
