Androutsos was a controversial military figure at the heart of the Greek War for Independence: an early member of the Filiki Eteria (Society of Friends), he was a key member of the Greek insurgency against the Ottomans, but became a rival of other pro-Greek factions and was briefly accused of collusion with the Turks before assuming control of the military forces in East-Central Greece. It was he who led the forces that took control of the Acropolis in September 1822 and who built a bastion there to protect their water supply. The author, Papadopoulos, was

From 1826 to 1832 he lived in France where he was influenced by the progressive ideas of Saint-Simon and Fourier. He returned to Greece and settled in Athens in 1834, while in the same year he was appointed a physician in Locrida and Fokida. In the following years he published the Progress magazine (weekly or fortnightly, published from July 1836 to 1854), and for one issue, no. 25, which authorities thought a
