Seminary Grads Keep MARS RotatingMars, named after the Roman god of war, is the fourth planet from the Sun and the second smallest planet in the Solar System. There are some in our community who would say MTS acts as the sun to MARS-ATP (Mid-Atlantic Rehabilitation Services-Addiction Treatment Program), with 12 Seminary graduates working there as employees, aiding our neighbors in achieving recovery from addiction. Our graduates contrast the Roman god Mars, leading people to find seasons of peace and hope.

Eight years ago, the owners of the parent company of MARS approached Greg Krausz ’02, MAPC alum and MTS adjunct faculty member, to develop from the ground up an addictions counseling center in the Lehigh Valley. Today Greg serves as Director of the program that has grown to 22 staff members serving 250 clients.

Many graduates of our MAPC/CC program serve on the counseling staff, including: Marsha Vosburgh Austin ’04 ’06, Stephanie Barnett ’13, Jeremy Campbell ’13, Patti Hoyt ’12, Jill Klein ’01, Robert McGill ’15, Jennifer Perreault ’10, Celeste Quinn ’13, Beth Songer ’13, Rachel Taylor ’11, and Celeste Wadowski ’11. Former employees include Penny McPhaul ’11 and Jill Sober ’13.

Among the alumni on staff, many served as interns at MARS-ATP during their time at MTS. Recognizing the impact of the immersive learning experience, Patti Hoyt ’12 comments, “The educational approach at MTS prepared me for any spectrum of counseling, while enabling me to hone my skills in an area of expertise.”

Our graduates transformational presence at MARS-ATP—just one example of how an MTS education in clinical counseling impacts individual lives and provides tremendous leadership in the community.

Seven members of the Spiritual Direction cohort ’14 gathered in a classroom with Marcella Kraybill-Greggo and Barbara Martell, co-directors of the Formative Spirituality program. They were very quiet as Marcella introduced Rev. Chris Nelson,

the Director of Seminary Advancement, to speak about the growth of the Spiritual Direction program and share examples of how other groups and individuals established funds to support students in their particular interest area. Suddenly lots of questions

Welcome Cynthia KossoIn August, Cynthia K. Kosso, Ph.D. began working as Provost and Dean of Faculty at Moravian College. Kosso replaces Gordon Weil, Ph.D., who retired in June.

Cynthia comes to Pennsylvania after serving at Northern Arizona University as the provost’s faculty fellow.

She received her B.A. in History from Montana State University, an M.A. in Ancient History and an M.A. in Classics and Archaeology from the University of Minnesota. She earned a Ph.D. in Ancient History and Classical Archaeology from University of Illinois at Chicago.

In her welcoming remarks prior to the MTS Moses Lectures, Cynthia stressed the value of the Seminary in the Moravian College community and enthusiastically spoke of working to strengthen relationships and collaboration across all parts of the institution.

MTS extends a warm welcome to Cynthia!

burst forth. Who would benefit? All students are important—how can one be chosen over another? How much money are you asking for? Do we also have to give to the Annual Fund? We don’t like the word “prize,” could we use gift? Great energy filled the room! It was a wonderful time of sharing.

Giving, whether to a special gift fund or an annual fund, is simply an opportunity to support something one believes in. If a monetary contribution cannot be made, support can be shown through prayers and sharing of the idea with others who may be interested and able to contribute.

What eventually emerged from this opportunity was the commitment to experiment with a Spiritual Direction Gift Fund. All seven alumni made three year pledges, most desiring to support both the Spiritual Direction Gift Fund and the Annual Fund. Marcella also shared the opportunity with the Spiritual Directors of the Greater Lehigh Valley, leading to several gifts from that group!

At the opening Convocation this fall, two students in the Spiritual Direction program received $300 gifts to use as they pursue their studies. So far, $2,178 has been received and over $3,800 pledged in support of the Spiritual Direction Gift Fund and the Annual Fund. It is amazing what seven inquisitive people can do when they seize an opportunity!

P.S. Anyone is welcome to contribute! Contact [email protected]

Lifetime Giving Society: It All Adds UpSue loves MTS and tries to contribute every year as she is able. In lean years, she gives $20; in full years, over $100. When she received her certificate of gratitude for her lifetime giving at the Alumni Banquet last year, she was astounded to learn she had contributed over $7,200! Small consistent actions do add up to make big significant differences. Sue’s generosity touched many students’ lives over 30 years.

Moravian Theological Seminary celebrates the generosity of its alumni and friends through the Lifetime Giving Society that honors all who, over their lifetime, contribute greater than $1,000. Two luncheon gatherings will lift up this special way of seizing the opportunity to support Moravian Seminary and help new generations of students reach their ministry and professional goals. Please add one of these dates to your calendar:

October 29 • 12pm • Lifetime Giving Society luncheon, Winston-Salem

March 11 • 12:30 • All Alumni Luncheon, Bethlehem

Chris Nelson, Director of Seminary Advancement, recognizes several of the 2014-15 Lifetime Giving Society members at the MAPC/CC Alumni Breakfast. Left-Right: Chris Nelson, Louise Young ’90, Lynn Webb ’11, ’14, Jane Joyce ’93, Julie Cook ’87, Glenn Asquith (former faculty and MAPC Director)

Planned GivingVictoria Badorf was an active member of Lititz Moravian Church, PA. She was part of a family long connected with Moravians and their Seminary. When she died in February of 2014, Moravian Seminary learned of her legacy commitment:

“It is my desire to give a gift to Moravian Theological Seminary, Bethlehem, PA, in honor of the Rev. Conrad Edmund Hermstead and Anna Mary Bricker Hermstead, my beloved father and mother. This gift is to be given in the name of Victoria Hermstead Badorf, my husband, John Thomas Badorf, and my two children, John Conrad Badorf and Victoria Badorf Acworth.”

We are grateful for Victoria’s longstanding commitment to development of church leadership. We are thankful for churches such as Lititz that likewise help their congregants know the value of training pastors, church educators, chaplains, counselors and spiritual directors. We celebrate with Victoria’s children the life of their mother.

You, too, can ensure the vital Christian leadership necessary for future generations of the church. Simply put in your will a statement similar to Victoria’s: “It is my desire to give a gift to Moravian Theological Seminary of $_____ or % of my estate.”

Global ImmersionRemembering Jan HusIn July 2015, the Center for Moravian Studies at MTS sponsored a tour to the Czech Republic and Germany in commemoration of the 600th anniversary of the martyrdom of Jan (John) Hus. Professors Riddick Weber and Craig Atwood, along with Director of Administration Jane Weber, led the group of 50 participants, which included several MTS alums and two current MTS students—Frank Shipman and Mandy Mastros. The group visited sites of historical and religious significance, worshiped with Moravians in Herrnhut, and joined in the national Hus commemorations in Prague on July 6 (the anniversary of his martyrdom).

Leading Our YouthProfessor Weber stayed on in Prague to join the Moravian Youth Convocation, who also visited historically significant sites. That group included one current MTS student, Adam Goodrich, and several students who are considering calls to ministry.

Tour members participated in an ecumenical candlelight vigil to commemorate Hus. L-R: Keith Kapp, Gwen Michel, Aaron Linville, Amy Linville, Sallie Greenfield, Susan Starbuck, Chancy Kapp, Laura Gordon, Frank Shipman, Mandy Mastros, Richard Starbuck, Riddick Weber

The group visited the largest worship building constructed by the early Unity in the Czech lands in Mladá Boleslav.

Craig Atwood had the opportunity to lecture from the same pulpits where early reformers, often considered heretics, preached.

Moravian youth from around the globe gathered in Europe this summer.

Journey to IsraelIn summer 2015, I took part in the Jezreel Expedition trip to Israel as part of the Archaeology of Ancient Israel in Action class with Rev. Dr. Deborah Appler. The journey to Israel is an experience that no student should pass up. It was an opportunity to visit the Holy Land and marvel at the historic sites. Some of the places toured ranged from The Church of the Nativity, Golgotha, The Western Wall, Caesarea, Mount of the Beatitudes, Sea of Galilee, Megiddo, Jezreel, to name a few. The feeling of reverence when touring these sites is indescribable. To be in the locations where Jesus walked and taught was phenomenal.

Participating in the archaeological dig taught how the discipline of archaeology is illuminating and intersecting with the biblical text and gave additional relevance to it. In addition to the archaeological dig, the experience of living among the people of Kibbutz Yizreel (a model of democratic community living) was monumental. This model is reminiscent of the first Christian church that is an image of what God intends for the church and the world (Acts 2). As a result of living among and interacting with the individuals at the kibbutz and elsewhere, I gained a greater cultural understanding of the life and history of the people.

Furthermore, through this experience the lessons learned have been immeasurable. In taking part in this cross-racial/cross-cultural, interfaith dialogue my worldview was challenged in a fundamental way. I am now more inspired to learn the history and listen to the stories of the people of other cultures, in so doing gaining greater cultural awareness, sensitivity, and respect.
