Overview

The Small and Medium Enterprises (SME) in India

survived the global economic pressures with cost-

effective processes and innovative approaches in the

recent past. One of the factors that helped Indian

economy remain buoyant is because of the presence of

SME cluster that generated nearly 1.3 million jobs

annuallyi, despite slowdown in the global economy. The

USP to manufacture singular industry product proved

beneficial for Indian SMEs to sustain in the long run.

It is interesting to note that small traders and

handicraft manufacturers also contribute to nearly

7.5%ii to the manufacturing sector in India. Although, in

the recent past, due to lack of investments and

support, number of artisans have opted out to take up

other opportunities to support their families.

Although, efforts from big conglomerates have seen

some significant shift in the mindset of small business

owners, the focus has generally been on boosting

agriculture or empowering women/children to earn

their livelihood.

Potential:

According to ASSOCHAM, SME sector accounts for 45

per centiii of India’s manufacturing output and nearly 40

per cent of the total exports for the country. Also, the

SMEs employ around 59 million people in 26 million

units in India.

Equal focus on Services and Manufacturing sector

to help absorb global economic pressures

SMEs create 1.3 million jobs annually and produce more than 8,000 marketable

products. In order to reach global audience, SMEs need presence in digital medium,

the most cost effective platform.

Investments are not enough, SMEs need constant

support

About 25 per centiv of the SMEs have closed shops or

are struggling to survive due to inadequate funds,

expensive credits, and delayed payments by large

organizations, as per the survey released by

ASSOCHAM in October 2012.

Although, the SME sector has witnessed a robust

growth in the last two years helping the economy bear

the aftershocks of global recession, adequate support

to bring them to the forefront is still a long way to go.

The study by ASSOCHAM also highlights that

development of the sector has been put on the

backburner since the focus has either been on services

or agriculture in the past five to six decades.

Stimulus package extension could be one of the

methods through which these small companies could

enhance their contribution to exports. One of the

other methods could be to seek investments from NRIs

or PIOs. This could help ease their financial crunch and

provide assistance for targeting new markets.

But is that really enough?

“Can we not make SMEs self-reliant and self-supportive so that they are able to help

themselves?”

GAP AREAS:

Some of the vital gap areas projected by SMEs are

limited funding, adapting to newer technology, low

production capacity, partial assistance and

modernized approach of financial institutions, and

non-availability of skilled workers. Further, a big

challenge the SMEs are facing in the country is

identifying newer markets.

Reaching the newer market:

One of the prime focuses for SMEs in India is

reaching newer market. They are looking for

assistance to understand the targeted country to

either customize product offerings or provide goods

at a competitive pricing.

Developing new products according to the market

demand could also help SMEs compete with the global

peers but, how?

The key is to communicate and brand the products to

create a niche in the market. Coupled with this, the

marketing effort could help boost global presence of

Indian SMEs.
