MEANING

• It is derived from Latin word ‘COMMUNIS’ means common ie common experience with other people or Give and Take , Mutual sharing,

• “It is the sharing of ideas and feelings in a mood of mutuality” ---Edgar dale

• “It is basically the process of sharing thoughts, ideass, feelings, experiences,etc with others”

• “Involving interaction which encourages give and take”. • “A two-way process including feed-back and

interaction”.

COMPONENTS

• The Sender : The who sends a message (Encoder)• The Message : Message Is sent by sender or

encoder transmits the message through some medium.

• The Receiver : The receiver is to whom the message has been sent (Decoder) It is for singal person or a group.

• Feed-back : It involve the reaction of the receiver. It is the hrart of the communication.

TYPES 1. Verbal and Non-verbal communication : Verbal communication is influenced by the voice (tone) and the

words. non-verbal is through Silence ,gestures, Eye contact, Movement, Body language ,Facial expression, touch &

etc. 2. Vertical and Horizontal communication : Hierarchical relationships between the sender and receiver. Upward –With superiors/ Heads Vertical Downward– with subordinate/ Children Horizontal---- Peers.

3. Oral, Written or sign communication. Oral is face to-face exchange between the sender and the receiver. It also takes place through media like

telephones and radio. Written communication can be letters written on paper and sent mail, e-mail, and fixed messages. Signs and signals – Telegraphic messages, other coded messages, gestures and signals and signs, body

languages. 4. Individual and Group communication : It is on the bases of extent of interaction . Single Channel, Two-way Communication , Circular communication, Multi channel communication.

Aspects of communication. Before communicating one should keep the following aspects in mind to

ensure good communication. 1. When to communicate : Right words at the right time are key to communication. 2. How much to talk. 3. Whom to talk. 4. How much to talk: It involves consideration of the needs and feeling of others. 5. Where to talk : Physical setting and social climate matters a lot in communication. 6. Why to talk : The purpose of communition should be kept in mind. 7. What to talk : Talking with specific objectives leads to good communication.

ESSENTIONALS OF COMMUNICATION

There are seven essentials of an communication. (7 Cs ) 1. Clear 2. Complete. 3. Concise. 4. Courteous : Calm and courteous manners. 5. Concrete. 6. Correct. 7. Candid: Frank in expression.

How to be Effective communicator.

• Choose words with care.• Avoid making remarks.• Be approachable.• Have a positive approach.• Have an open mind.• Use ‘we’ than ‘I’• Keep to the point.• Systematize your thoughts. • Ask for participation• Be empathetic. Match your word with expressions.• Be sober : Minimize emotional reactions.

How to be an Effective Listener

1. Create interest for the subject.2. Judge the content & not the looks of speakers.3. Look for ideas.3. Keep patience.4. Be flexible.5. Train your mind to Listen.6. Keep you mind open7. Capitalize on Thought speed.

BARRIERS OF COMMUNICATION.A INTERNAL BARRIERS : 1. Poor physical health or illness. 2. Poor Background ( Learning & Knowledge). 3. Poor Mental health. 4. Handicapped in understanding the symbolic expression, Verbalism, etc. B. External Barriers : 1. Noise and other similar distraction. 2. Polluted envirnment. 3. Envirnmental Physical discomport. 4. Lack of proper motivation. 5. Unhealthy rivalaries.
