Communication tools:
Communication tools such as TELEPHONES and theINTERNET are increasingly critical to economic success andpersonal/global advancement.
Impact of Internet:
The Internet serves many functions – as virtual community,electronic marketplace, information source and entertainmentcentre, among others. Through the Internet, we can createnew businesses or facilitate the delivery of basic servicessuch as health and education.

Present Status(MOCIT Annual Report)
• Indian telecom network is second largest in the world after China.
• The country has 895.51 million telephone connections, including864.72 million wireless telephone connections.
• Overall tele-density in the country is 73.34%.
• Urban tele-density is 149.55%, whereas rural tele-density is39.90%.
• The share of wireless telephones in total telephones is 96.56%.
• The share of private sector in total telephones is 85.51%.
• Number of Broadband connections is 14.98 million.

National Telecom Policy-2012

• The Government approved National Telecom Policy-2012(NTP-2012) on 31st May 2012 which addresses the Vision,Strategic direction and the various medium term and longterm issues related to telecom sector.
• The primary objective of NTP-2012 is maximizing publicgood by making available affordable, reliable and securetelecommunication and broadband services across the entirecountry.

Objectives of NTP-2012

• Provide secure, affordable and high quality telecommunicationservices to all citizens.
• Strive to create One Nation - One License across services andservice areas.
• Achieve One Nation - Full Mobile Number Portability and worktowards One Nation - Free Roaming.
• Increase rural tele-density from the current level of around 39 to70 by the year 2017 and 100 by the year 2020.
• To recognize telecom, including broadband connectivity as a basicnecessity like education and health and work towards ‘Right toBroadband’.
• Provide affordable and reliable broadband-on-demand by the year2015 and to achieve 175 million broadband connections by theyear 2017 and 600 million by the year 2020 at minimum 2 Mbpsdownload speed and making available higher speeds of at least 100Mbps on demand.
