CIS at a Glance

Why CIS… “The good atmosphere between teachers and students creates a perfect learning environment”

WhenIstartedwiththeCISBachelor,Iwantedtolearneverything

aboutwritingtheperfecttext.Duringthecurriculum,Isoonfound

outthatcommunicationholdssomuchmorethanwritingtexts

only. I became particularly interested in the interface between

communication and Information Technology and wanted to go

deeply into that subject. Therefore I decided to choose the CIS

MasterspecialisationHumanAspectsofInformationTechnology.

ground in IT, Iknewthispartof theprogrammewouldbecome

pace:ittakesalotofeffortanddedicationtokeepup.Fortunately,

wehavehighlyqualifiedteachers,whoaremorethanonlyexperts

intheirfieldandtheyareverypassionate about their specialties.

Their enthusiasm motivates me even more to be at my best.

The best part of CIS is the good atmosphere between teachers and

students. This creates a perfect learning environment, which gives

metheopportunitytoshowinitiative,askquestionsandactively

engageandcontributetodiscussionsaboutthefieldofCIS.

CIS student Marlies Lammers

CIS is a master programme for highly talented, motivated, curious

and internationally-oriented students. CIS challenges students to

embarkinacomprehensivestudyofcommunicationandinformation.

This means that CIS covers different communicative codes, such

as language, pictorial information, and non-verbal communication,

andthatitinvitesstudentstotakedifferentdisciplinaryperspectives

on communication and information behaviour: linguistic, psycho-

linguistic, sociolinguistic, technological. Empirical study is an

importantpartofeachcourse.Recenttechnologicaldevelopments

in communication and information, ranging from social media to

data mining, are covered in different selective courses. The idea

behind this set up is communication and information experts

nowadays have to deal with the soft side of Information Technology

more than ever before.

Withinthisprogramme,studentscanfocusondifferentfieldsof

communication and information. CIS offers a range of optional

courses. That way, students can focus on different areas of study

(communication design, digital media, intercultural communication).

In sum, CIS is waiting for students who have creative and innovative

ideas about communication and society, who are eager to empirically

examinetheseideasandopinions,andwholiketoworkcooperatively

in an agreeable academic environment.
