Communications Manager Opera Philadelphia Position The Communications Manager will play a leading role in helping Opera Philadelphia communicate its story. S/he will create compelling digital content for social media channels and web properties as well as print materials such as festival and season brochures, program books, fundraising collateral, and marketing pieces. The manager will also provide expertise and key insight into effective messaging and content strategy. The primary responsibilities for this position are as follows: Social Media and Digital Content Management Working with the Director of Communications, develop the Opera’s digital and social media strategy. Work with artistic staff and performers to identify relevant content for sharing via social media. Manage social media channels and create content for website and app development Conceive, develop, and produce video and audio content that helps extend the opera’s reach and engagement. Oversee the development of written and multimedia projects by bringing together and collaborating with artists, production crews, designers, and writers Partner with colleagues to achieve reach and engagement goals across social media, web, email, public relations, and other distribution platforms Manage a digital media library including video footage, audio files, photographs and other files Writing, Editing and Print Production Working with the Director of Communications, serve as a key institutional writer on publications such as show programs, season brochures, annual reports, festival books, and other major print and digital publications Provide editorial direction and support across multiple departments in the company Copyedit, fact-check, and proofread content across channels to ensure the highest level of quality, accuracy, and consistency in grammar, spelling, punctuation, style, and tone. Edit and proofread print and web publications produced by Institutional Advancement and Community Programs, including, but not limited to, brochures, grant proposals, emails, speaking notes, invitations, and education materials Work with the Director of Communications, Graphic Designer, Brand Communications Partner, and print vendors to ensure all collateral is designed and printed at the highest quality Media Relations

The manager will also provide expertise and key insight into effective messaging and content strategy.

The primary responsibilities for this position are as follows:

Social Media and Digital Content Management

• Working with the Director of Communications, develop the Opera’s digital and social media strategy.

Media Relations

• Working with the Director of Communications, pitch and secure coverage of Opera Philadelphia to regional and local media

• Host individual reporters at Opera Philadelphia rehearsals and events and facilitate interviews with company officials, singers, musicians, directors, and designers

• Greet music critics and other media at performances and respond to their needs • Assist with the creation and distribution of press materials including photographs, video, scores

and librettos • Assist with media planning and execution • Assist with the management of relationships with artist publicists, National Media Consultants,

and regional tourism agencies • Attend appropriate events and performances • Assist with tracking and sharing media coverage

Qualifications

• 3-5 years communications experience preferred; arts/music experience preferred • Familiarity with opera a plus • Strong social media experience • Strong writing and editing skills • Experience with Adobe InDesign and Photoshop preferred • Experience with content management systems, publishing platforms, content curation, video

editing software, and digital asset management • Experience writing for a breadth of targeted audiences including institutional, non-profit and

high net worth. • Superior people and relationship skills with innate empathy for the end user – and the desire to

help them achieve their goals. • High level of organization and attention to detail – ability to prioritize content and slash and burn

where necessary. • Results orientation, with a strong sense of urgency for moving projects to completion and success. • Ability and agility to work under pressure, to adapt easily to changing situations and priorities,

and to meet multiple deadlines and goals simultaneously. • Ability to consult to and interact within all levels of the company – from executives and managers

to junior staff – and to achieve results with and through others.
