St. John Spring Musical
Sunday, May 7 at 9:00 AM
This familiar Bible story is told once again using the animals' perspective as God leads Noah on one of the most outrageous adventures in the history of mankind. Noah's obedience protected him and his family through the greatest storm the earth will ever encounter. This fun-filled musical is a great reminder to children, and our church, that God will help us weather any of life's storms as long as we are obedient to His will.
New Member Reception
Following the Spring Musical, all are invited to make their way to the Fellowship Hall for a reception in honor of the newest members of St. John.

Congregation Youth Outreach Opportunity
The Women’s Book Club meets the first Wednesday of the month at the Green Bay Distillery at 6:30 PM. The book for May 3rd is "Small Great Things" by Jodi Picoult. Carol Pearson will be leading us in the discussion. The book for June 7th will be "The Day the World Came to Town: 9/11 in Gander, Newfoundland" by Jim DeFede. Sandy Lindstrom will lead us in that discussion. Peggy has read a great book that she wanted to share with us. The name of the book is "Being Mortal" by Atul Gawande. She wasn't sure if it would be a good book for the book club; but, thought it maybe a good book for some.

Letter Carrier’s Food Drive
The Stocked Shelf Pantry needs volunteers to meet us at church to empty the truck, haul the food inside, sort it, and put it away. Last year our turnout was amazing, and we were done in an hour and a half. We probably had near 25 or more people helping. Scott has already notified the church youth that they have an opportunity to help out and several have al-ready agreed to help. If you are free that day and have friends who are free, please come to church to help. I'm hoping to have the food to church by 2 pm, but it all depends on well things go at Packerland and how fast we can get our truck loaded.

Dateline: April 19, 2017 It’s good to be a Dodgers fan…We’re a few weeks into the season now and the Dodgers are, well, they’re ahead of the Giants and that’s always nice. Sure, they haven’t gotten off to the start that bluebloods would like, but it’s a long season… I’m often asked, “Josh you grew up in East Texas. How is it you’re a Dodgers fan?” Well, I’ll tell you. My mom was a Dodgers fan. Why was she a Dodgers fan? I have no idea. She was born in Portage, Wisconsin, but lived all over the U.S. and Germany as an Army (and later Air Force) brat. If she were still alive, I’d probably take the time to ask her how it was that she became a Dodgers fan, but when she was alive it just never came up. Instead, she just passed on her love of the team to me. And that’s all she wrote. Go Dodgers! I share that because it just goes to show that you never know what’s going to stick when you’re trying to raise kids, whether it’s good manners, political leanings, preferences for certain sports teams, or faith. As I write this, I’m aware that I got most of those qualities from my mom. Looking back, I’d say that’s because she shared with me what was important to her. And that brings me to the point of this little missive. Is it important to you for the children of St. John Lutheran Church to grow up in the Christian faith?
I hope you answered “yes.” If so, I have a favor to ask…
Come to the Sunday School Musical on Sunday, May 7th at
9:00am! It’s a blessed day in the life of this congregation! It’s a blessed day because the congregation entrusts the children we care about with
sharing the story of our faith. So come! Even if you don’t have kids in the musical come and hear what the kids have to say and sing. Support them as they claim to their faith! After the musical, let them know they did a great job. Let them know that their growing in the faith is important to you…and might I add that most of these kids were baptized right in this congregation; when they were baptized, this congregation promised to support them in their new life in Christ. Here’s a great opportunity to do just that. You never know what kind of a seed you might plant by your presence and a kind word or two. I’ll see you then. Pax, Pastor Josh
A Prayer for Mom A young boy had been misbehaving, so his mother sent him to his room. Sometime later, he came out and told his mom he’d prayed about the matter. “That’s good,” she replied. “If you ask God for help to not misbehave, he’ll help you.”
“Oh, I didn’t pray for help behaving,” said the boy. “I prayed for God to help you put up with me.”

Youth & Family Director’s Report
During the season of Lent, most Christians give something up. Many give up the traditional eating meat on Fridays. Karleigh gave up drinking soda. My dad gave up desserts. I tried to give up saying negative things about other people.
As I write this letter, it is Good Friday and I feel a hunger in my belly. Brian Olsen shared with me several years back that he gave up eating from Maundy Thursday night to Easter morning. I have since done the same, and it has really made me think about the sacrifice Jesus Christ made for me, and all people, by dying on the cross. Scott Conradt being a little uncomfortable for a few days is no-where near the pain suffered by Jesus, but it makes me think of what he did. All these things we give up make us focus on the ultimate gift Jesus gave, his life. But maybe for the rest of the year, rather than giving something up, we could do the opposite. By giving things up, it is more about us, rather than others. By giving something away, the focus is on someone else.
I am not saying giving something up is bad, but as we go through the rest of the year I would challenge us all to take something on. What could we do to help our church, our families, or others in the community? God has blessed us with so much and asks that we share those blessings with others. Maybe you could
give more time to your spouse or your kids. Maybe volunteering to teach a Sunday school class or joining a ministry team would be possi-ble. Maybe you could help out at a homeless shelter or visit a nursing home. It will look different for everyone. God asks that we live our lives for him, and when we look to give of ourselves we are doing just that. Step out of your comfort zone, trust God, and he will take care of the details.
Keep the faith,
Scott

This summer, you’re invited to join us for a three-session Bible study written by Kelly Fryer titled “All Anew: Ready or Not,” Fryer challenges us to consider what we’re really asking for when we plead with God for renewal.
Session 1: Say goodbye to nice For the heroes and “sheroes” of the biblical story, being part of the “new” thing God was doing often meant having to do and say things that were un-popular with family, friends and neighbors.
Session 2: Stand with the least of these The biblical story tells us that whenever God does a new thing, it happens in, through and with people who live on the margins.
Session 3: Upend the tables The biblical story is filled with characters who challenged unjust systems, took action that turned societal norms upside down and spoke truth to power.
Thank you to everyone who attended the Women of the ELCA sponsored Lenten meal on April 5. Because of your generous donations, we were able to send $125 to ELCA Global Missions as a contribution to the support of the Roth family, who are serving as missionaries in Tokyo, Japan.
The Roths will be concluding their work with Global Missions this summer. We have already received information on another missionary to consider for spon-sorship.
WOMEN’S BIBLE STUDY Tuesday, May 9, 2017 6:30-8:30 p.m.
2866 Pioneer Drive (Jackie Burkat’s home)
From the introduction to the May study in GATHER magazine: “Here are 10 reflections from 10 diverse women of many generations, sharing what it means to trust God, who knows us com-pletely, with our joys and our struggles. We asked each woman to reflect on a particular time in her life, in a way that might help others in similar circumstances. Much like the many women’s circles that engage in GATHER Bible studies each month, may these authors’ warm, personal stories, shared Scriptures and prayers embrace you with a sense of fellowship, Christian hope and the knowledge that you are not alone.” (GATHER May 2017) Our study is in GATHER Magazine. To subscribe, go to www.gathermagazine.org or call 844-409-0576. Ask Jackie Burkat if you would like to see a copy. Call her at 592-1217 if you have questions. Join us at any time, even if you don't subscribe to GATHER.
