Fisher Embraces Holiday Spirit December is often a month of commemoration for many individuals. Whether celebrating traditional holidays, the close of a semester, or the coming of a new year, this month signifies change. One change that occurred this year was the modernization of the College’s mission statement. “Fisher College changes lives by positioning students in their quest for the knowledge and skills that will guide them through a lifetime of intellectual and professional pursuits” serves as a reminder that Fisher is a student-centered institution.

The update includes an emphasis on nine values, designed to guide students, staff, and faculty during their time as members of the Fisher community. For this newsletter edition, the following articles will each reflect at least one of the nine established values. Happy reading. Each end of the year edition of the Communiqué features an activity, so be sure to check out “Who’s That Baby?” game on page 6!

Value Two: Fisher College provides access to an education to approved students seeking the tools they need to achieve their goals.

Geoplotting for the City of Salem, MA By Professor Rich Metzger

Value Four: The Fisher experience activates students to take ownership of their learning by preparing them to overcome challenges and pursue opportunities.

Value Seven: Fisher views ethical and moral development and public service as imperatives.

On November 5, Sammy Luciano, Edwin Pena, Dorota Rudnick, and Jessica Warner presented a report to Ms. Kate Fox, the Executive Director of Destination Salem, the marketing arm for the City of Salem. The presentation by these four Hospitality and Tourism students was a culmination of nearly eight weeks of hard work, dedication, and teamwork.

This real-life project helped Destination Salem identify marketing trends by their careful analysis and meticulous sorting of nearly two years of survey data.

The surveys dealt with visitations to Salem, interests, where visitors came from, and when visitors planned on visiting Salem. From the skills and knowledge gained here at Fisher College, these Hospitality and Tourism students produced a report that pinpointed the information Ms. Fox needed. The City of Salem is now better able to make better decisions on where to spend its 2010 marketing dollars.

It is interesting to note that four other Colleges turned down this project and Fisher College successfully took on the challenge. Congratulations to Sammy, Edwin, Dorota, and Jessica on a job well done!

Early Childhood Education Program Spearheads Collection for Our PlaceFor the past several years, the Early Childhood Education Club has sponsored a holiday gift drive for Our Place, a local child care provider that offers free day care to families living in homeless shelters. Overseen by ECE Program Director Linda Small, the College adopted several families and coordinated a collection of toys, books, and clothing.

Above, the donated presents.

Right, Mario Granados loads the gifts into the Van. Mario has volunteered to drive the Van to Our Place for the last couple of years, as many times needed in order to make the deliveries.

Donations were collected around campus and at the December 12th Children’s Holiday Party,

Thank you to all those individuals who were able to make a positive impact to a family in need.

Value Three: Dedicated, experienced, and caring educators allow Fisher College to accomplish its mission.
