SUCCESSFUL TRUSTWORTHY ORGANIZED RESPECTFUL MOTIVATED

RMS First Semester Data

Ridgeline Middle School, and all Yelm Community Schools, monitor several school related areas as a method to

address areas in need of adjustment and to celebrate our successes. The data posted within this month’s

newsletter includes our first semester results for academics and behavior. Although our charts are represented

using numbers and grade levels, please know that data collected is student specific. That is, we are focusing

our attention toward individual students through the many services we offer at RMS.

We call our data analysis ‘progress monitoring’. What this means is that we identify current and historical data

to make informed decisions to support specific students and our practices at RMS. The behavior data collected

indicates areas needing to be addressed in our building. We can identify the types of behaviors, grade level,

specific students, or procedures we need to focus upon in an effort provide positive experiences. Our academic

achievement data (how many classes were passed) provides us with another method of tracking individual

students. From our data, we review individual student progress when one or more classes have not been

passed. We can identify if a student needs to be referred for additional support.

Overall, we are quite pleased with the trends represented from our semester data. We would ask our parents

to contact RMS if you have concerns related to your child’s academic and/or behavior progress. We do offer

additional support through our Opportunity Time, counseling services, and prior arrangements made with

teachers for after school tutoring. We encourage parents who have specific concerns or general questions to

please contact us at 458-1100.

Student Transfer Requests for 2016-17 Beginning February 1, 2017, transfer requests will be accepted for the 2017-18 school year. Students attending

their current school on an approved transfer must re-apply for the next year. Approval or denial of transfer requests is based on criteria outlined in board policy 3131 for resident and 3141 for nonresident students.

FIRST ROUND - February 1 to March 15, 2017 Applications received by March 15 will be be given first priority and notified of the district decision by April 30.

New applications may be subject to a wait list.

SECOND ROUND - March 16 to May 31, 2017 Applications received by May 31 will be given second priority and notified of the district decision by June 30.

New applications may be subject to a wait list.

After May 31, 2017 through the First Day of School (September 6) Applications received after May 31 will be considered in August on a case-by-case basis and may have to wait until actual enrollment counts in September before receiving notification. Please note that school offices are

closed in July and part of August.

TRANSPORTATION Parents will provide transportation for students who voluntarily attend a school outside their attendance area.

Rep. Wilcox sponsors Ridgeline Middle School student as page in

State House

Sponsored by her 2nd District Rep. J.T. Wilcox, R-Yelm, Ridgeline Middle School student Taylor Tompkins traveled to Olympia Jan. 9-13 to serve as a page in the state House.

As part of her page duties for the week, Taylor learned to navigate the many buildings on the Capitol campus and delivered messages and documents to legislators and staff. She also attended page school every day to understand the operations and actions of the Legislature.

"It's always great to have the opportunity to sponsor students from my district to take part in the House Page Program," said Wilcox. "I want to thank Taylor for her service to the House and express my admiration for her eagerness to get involved in state government. She has a great future ahead."

Each year, students from around the state apply to participate in the legislative page program. Students spend a week attending page school, learning the inner workings of state government and assisting legislators on the House floor. Pages earn $35 per day while serving in the program. To become a page, applicants must have a legislative sponsor, be between the ages of 14 and 16, and obtain written permission from their parents and school. Advanced Academics Nomination Window

Yelm Community Schools offers Advanced Academics services for qualifying students.

These services are designed to meet the needs of students with exceptionally high

ability. If you have a student that you would like to refer please pick up a referral form

from the front office or download it from the Yelm Community Schools website.

Teachers, parents, and community members can nominate students for these

services. The nomination window opens on February 17th and closes on March 10th.

Late applications will not be accepted. Students who have been receiving services

will continue to receive services in the area(s) they qualified in.

Beginning in February, RMS will be holding Battle of the Books. Ms. Lucini, Mrs. Mulkey, and

Mrs. Bingham will lead students as they form teams, select and read novels, complete

activities and compete in two knowledge battles. Meetings will be 2/21, 3/7, 3/28, 4/17, 5/2,

and 5/16 from 2:00 to 3:45. Parents and guardians - if you are interested, an adult team is also

an option!

Congratulations to Sarah Mulkey and Rebecca

Bingham. They are the recipients of a $250.00 mini

grant awarded from the Thurston County School

Retirees' Association. The purpose of this grant is to

provide an opportunity for teachers to acquire

materials or provide experiences for their students

above and beyond that paid for by district funds. The

materials or experiences should supplement and

enhance building or district goals.

Leadership ~ Operation Gratitude

Since their inception in 2003, Operation Gratitude annually

sends 200,000+ care packages filled with food,

entertainment, hygiene, and handmade items, plus personal

letters of appreciation to Veterans, First Responders, New

Recruits, Wounded Heroes, their Care Givers, and to individually named U.S. service members

deployed overseas and their families waiting at home.

Their mission is to lift the spirits and meet the evolving needs of the Military and First

Responder communities, and provide volunteer opportunities for civilians anywhere in America to

express their appreciation to all who serve our nation.

Thank you to RMS Leadership for donating 27 lbs. of candy to add to these care packages!! This

generous donation allowed over 200,000 ‘choc full’ care packages this year. Great job to our

Leadership Advisors and students!!! Way to go!!

STUDENT PASSING RATES—EIGHT YEAR TREND For the past eight years, we have been compiling the statistics comparing grades from quarter to quarter and year to year.

Here is the breakdown for the second term and end of first semester that we just completed.

You should have received your child’s report card by now. If you have any questions, please call me or one of our counselors. 9th grade students who failed a class (see table below) may be credit deficient for graduation and will need to

make it up in order to graduate. We use this data to evaluate interventions supporting student achievement. We had 370 out of 620 students who made the Honor Roll! Congratulations to you for your hard work!

The World's Finest Chocolate fundraiser will be starting soon! Look for order forms to come home soon. Order forms and money collected will be

due back by Tuesday, March 7. Every year Ridgeline holds a fundraiser to support the end-of-the-year trips for our students. Each item sold earns 50% profit so students who sell twice the cost of their trip will attend for free! All students who participate will receive a discounted trip based on total class sales. Please note that

students must still qualify for their trip based on grades, attendance and discipline as outlined in the student handbook.
